Go for the food...
Submitted Wednesday, July 20, 2011 - 12:23pm [Dine in]

Great food...not the best (Cause I've been to China/TW/HK, and I've really experienced the best). But very good compared to other shanghainese restaurants in the lower mainland.

All their dishes are fairly decent, and you can't go wrong with their signatures.

Biggest downside here is the service and ambiance...the actual service once you get a seat isn't bad...but its the organization while waiting for a seat that is horrible. Before you get a seat, you have to fight over the other dozens of people trying to budge in line. If you go during off peak hours though, this won't be an issue.

The Ambiance...well...its cramped...its very loud...you get the idea...

Overall worth it for the food!

Doesn't live up to the hype
Submitted Wednesday, October 20, 2010 - 5:11pm [Dine in]

A few of my friends have told me that this place is incredible, so I hit it up...twice...just to make sure I'm not passing the wrong judgement on this place.

The food itself is just ok...everything fried was actually pretty bad...whoever is doing the tempura and such was definately not doing a good job...if you see how tempura is made, and how its supposed to taste, you will know its not just "fried"...its very delicately made, which in this case, was not.

The rolls were pretty good, but nothing new. A lot of japanese restaurants have had these types of rolls for a long time...once again though, they are quite tasty.

The pressed sushi here is outstanding...I've had pressed sushi a many, but both selections here are great, and the salmon one is outstanding! it is a MUST order if you visit miku.

The sashimi was fresh, but very expensive and over priced. We had a 85$ chef platter, and it didn't come with much...the quality was good but not great...the presentation was very well done though.

Service was good both times I went. Both times I had a different server, but it seems like the staff enjoy working there. They have pleasant smiles, and are a prime example of what service should be like.

All in all its a good experience, i would repeat just for the ambiance...I think its a decent date place :)

Absolutely the worst service in the world!
Submitted Thursday, December 17, 2009 - 10:20am [Dine in]

If you like to go to a restaurant and be completely ignored, with dirty surroundings, no one refilling your water/tea, no one taking away empty dishes this is the place for you.

Seriously...we had a full table of empty dishes, and when our second orders came, the just put all our stuff on top of the old dishes. It took forever before anyone served us, and no one seemed happy to work there. Albeit the servers were never actually rude...just not that great at their jobs.

The food itself was ok. Some of it actually tasted kinda bad. The meats were good, and noodles were good (but over priced. $4 for 1 bundle of udon or Vermecelli).

I will not visit again...for the price, the service is absolutely dreadful!

Decent food...poor poor service
Submitted Monday, July 27, 2009 - 11:29am [Dine in]

I don't know why I keep coming to this place....but I do...the food is consistently ok...nothing spectacular...but definitely not bad.

The service however is probably the worst out of any restaurant I've been to. No one will ever attend to you when you walk in... you always have to wait a few minutes before anyone greets you...then when you talk to any of the servers...they are very indifferent...you can't even tell if they heard what you said and asked for....its not like they are rude...just indifferent...

I'm sure I'd be back sometime though, as the food is decent...and if you go during certain hours, its not a bad deal.

Craving Izakaya? but not the drive? go here...
Submitted Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 12:25pm [Dine in]

If you really hate driving to Guu, Hapa, Kingyo, Zakkushi etc then Naan Chu is an ok Substitute.

Food wise I would say Manzo is better, but Decor and Service is better here. We had good service, food was decent, but it was a bit pricey. Basically a meal here costs more than it would at any of the downtown places, and the food is not as good (its not bad, just not as good). For instance, I ate at Kingyo on the weekend for $35 a person, with drinks...I ate here for $35 a person as well, but no drinks, and was still hungry.

Overall I wouldn't repeat, but I would reccomend a try...only here and Manzo are worth a try in richmond in terms of izakaya...all the other places are a joke.

Great deal if you get the Special
Submitted Saturday, May 16, 2009 - 9:53pm [Dine in]

We Ordered the special they have on their website right now (the steak and seafood). Thought we'd have a nice 'guys' night out so a few of my friends went to Morton's. The steak itself is definitely better than the keg (and I love the keg mind you)...but my Gotham's experience still beats Mortons by far in terms of steak. All the other food we got was good...nothing extravagant...although the Mac and Cheese was quite good.

I've heard a lot of people here rave about their Chocolate Cake...but I've had much better, it was good...but just that...good...

Service was good...I guess the server saw that we were just a bunch of goofy guys and was funny and personal...not 'upscaly-ish' service...but the service definately was good.

We all left completley stuffed...its not cheap...but its worth it imho...

Nice Restaurant if you are in the neighborhood...
Submitted Tuesday, May 12, 2009 - 11:58am [Dine in]

I guess Alexandra Gill and I are on opposite pages...she gave this place a great review, so I decided to try it.

Anyways, We had the Scallop Carpaccio which excellent. We also had a half order or Spaghetti with Clams which was also very delicious. The other starter we did not care much for was the Beef Carpaccio...it wasen't bad...its just many places have much better.

All our main courses were a dissapointment though. From the Fish of the Day, Steak, Chicken, and Lamb. All the dishes looked much better than they tasted (The taste, the sauce, and the quality of meat was just 'ok'). Presentation was very nice though...lots of colors and nicely grated cheese everywhere.

Decor was different...very low tone and warm feeling, albeit the Kitchen had a lot of talking going on that you can clearly hear.

Service was hit and miss. We had 2 people serving us, a male server and a female. The male server was horrible...just asked us questions, and when we debated, he just walked away without saying a word (and there was only 1 other table in the restaurant that night, so it wasen't like it was busy). The female server was much friendlier...perhaps not as professional as some upper class restaurants, but very friendly, welcoming, and good service overall from her.

I would not repeat...and I would give it a mediocre reccomend because for the price, and food, and level of service, it is not worth the drive; unless you live nearby.

Ok Dim Sum at best...
Submitted Tuesday, April 7, 2009 - 1:38pm [Dine in]

The Dim Sum here is 'ok' at best...most of their items are sub par compared to other places in richmond. The service is always good here. All the food is pushed around in carts so freshness and availability mileage may vary.

I witnessed something awful when I went here though. There was a set of Thongs the server uses to serve the dishes (basically instead of using their hands, they use the thongs so the hot plate doesn't scorch them; but the thongs always come in contact with the food, which is fine usually) that were dropped on the dirty old carpet...without even wiping it down, they picked it up, used it to serve another dish.

That is just what I saw. Overall though, its a decent place to go to with your family without much wait on the weekends.

Great Lunch Spot!
Submitted Friday, April 3, 2009 - 3:33pm [Dine in]

I've only been here for lunch (over 10 times) and never had I had a complaint here. The food is great portioned(just right for lunch), the value is simply fantastic...you get a good tasty soup, spring roll, and your main course...

The place isn't spiffy clean or nicely decorated...but for a quick lunch...it can't be beat! And for how busy they get, and how few servers they have, the service is quite well too!

Still a classic
Submitted Tuesday, March 31, 2009 - 1:36am [Dine in]

Tropika is still a great classic malaysian restaurant most richmonites dine at every so often. There aren't many alike in richmond. The service is always decent for an asian restaurant. Servers are friendly and food always comes on time and of the many times I've been here, no order has ever been wrong, nothing undercooked...its very consistent.

The food itself is a little bit salty (msg) for my tastes, but don't let that stop you, I'm just a little sensitive to it. For the value, the place is pretty good. Nice decor, decent service, good food. There are some hit and misses sometimes, but nothing is ever horrid.

I'd recommend this place to Delicious Malaysian/Thai food every once in a while to go to

Yummy Appy's!
Submitted Monday, March 30, 2009 - 3:13pm [Dine in]

I only had the chance to get 5 appy's here between 2 others to share (we were on a multi restaurant tasting spree one evening). All I can say is YUM! very nicely and delicately done. Everything we ordered had great contrasting textures and tastes. I'm pretty wary of new trendy places, but the food is great. The service was good...nothing SUPER, but definately good...

I can't wait to go back here again!

Mixed opinions from me...but a nice visit overall!
Submitted Friday, February 20, 2009 - 3:07pm [Dine in]

First off, the decor is nice...very nice. From the lounge, to the washrooms, to reception...these guys went over the top (especially for something in richmond). My only opinion was the dining area didn't seem as 'nice' as the rest of the place...just not as fluid in design; don't get me wrong though, its still pretty neat.

Service at the beginning took a while...maybe there was some miscommunication as to which server was supposed to serve our table...but after that was resolved, we had a marvelous male server who did a splendid job! 5 stars here!

The appys were good...nothing we ordered was stellar, but it was good overall. The steaks however were just average...my prime rib I/d give it 3.5/5...the other steaks we ordered just 3/5...they weren't bad...but Morton's and Gothams was just better...for steak quality, I'd actually only marginally give them an edge over the keg. With all this criticism though, the meal was still delicious :)

The price was a bit much though in my mind...for a full meal with appetizers and wine it was a bit over the top for what you get. I paid almost the same when I ate at Gothams, and the quality was much better.

Overall...still a recommend. I would repeat for drinks and appy's in the lounge area...beautiful decor...plenty of parking!

Good noodles, good congee!
Submitted Friday, February 20, 2009 - 3:00pm [Dine in]

This is probably my favorite place to go in richmond for wonton noodles and congee. Quality is always consistenly good, service is always quick, and the cost is moderate.

Their congee is perfect...not too thin, and not too thick, and always comes out piping hot!

Their noodles are great as well. Their portions are a little bit smaller than most other places hence my value rating of 3...

I've been here repeatedly and will continue to repeat!!!

Very poor service...I hope nurses at hospitals server better...
Submitted Monday, February 16, 2009 - 10:48am [Dine in]

This place is like all the other taiwanese bubble tea places. Theres some eats you can have here, along with bubble tea. Nothing was good...I've been here twice and both times the food itself was very awful. The bubble tea is mediocre...but thats not the niche here.

You come here, and you see little asian girls dressed in uniforms...that would all be well and great and account for the poor food if there was some service and some life in the servers...there wasen't. Service here is the worst I've EVER been to anywhere...period. You will NOT get asked if you want drinks or food until you wave someone down like in a cheap chinese restaurant. Then they will come to your table, and not even ask you what you want...they just stand there with a pen...no words out of any of the servers mouths...no smile, not even eye contact.
Same thing goes with the rest of the meal and the bill...you gotta try to wave down the unorganized unmotivated staff.

Poor food, poor service, doesn't get my vote for anything other than making a decent attempt at a cosplay cafe. Perhaps the staff just need motivation.

Great quality! Fresh! Yum!
Submitted Wednesday, January 21, 2009 - 9:55pm [Dine in]

I don't even want to write this review...cause I don't want more people coming here! :)

Its a very small restaurant, and its pretty much usually full nowadays...why? cause the food is GOOD. I can pretty much vouch that this will be the BEST sushi/sashimi place in richmond hands down in terms of food quality.

For all of those who think ANY AYCE places serve 'good' food...please head elsewhere because you will be dissapointed...it will cost you a lot more here to fill your belly full of fish...

What you will not be dissapointed in however is the quality. The presentation of the food is nice...the quality is great, the way the owner prepares his rice for the sushi is the way real japanese sushi is meant to be...

My only issue was the service, since its a small family run restaurant, when its busy its hard for them to keep up...but they are very typical polite japanese people who make it up with smiles, nods, and apologies.

The place is small, but its very cozy and although there was not much interior design here...every seat has a view of the chef making his sushi...

I can't wait till I go back here again! Yum!

Inconsistent...
Submitted Tuesday, December 23, 2008 - 10:43am [Dine in]

I've been to Cassis 4 times. First couple of times service was good, food was excellent, and had a thoroughly enjoyable dinner experience. The last 2 times I was provided with horrible service...our server was never anywhere to be found. The food was overcooked and lacking in general.

Since there are so many places to go in the lower mainland, I doubt I will return here again, but keep in mind my first two experiences were great here...if my rating was ONLY based on those first two times, I would have given a Food:4 Service:4 Value:4 and Ambiance:3. My rating here reflects the median of all my visits.

Love It!
Submitted Thursday, December 11, 2008 - 1:04am [Dine in]

The first thing you notice about chambar is how its hard to find, and dark inside. It gives a great european feeling where all the good places to eat are down narrow alleys and such. The decor makes you feel very comfortable, very warm.

For the most part, most items on the menu are good...but its the mussels I enjoy the most here. They rate a 4/5 in terms of taste and quality, but the atmosphere accompanied with a bottle of wine completes it. Desserts are here excellent...I strongly suggest you try the dessert here if you get a chance.

Clean, Good, Decor...
Submitted Thursday, December 11, 2008 - 1:00am [Dine in]

I've been to Dinesty over ten times now. Everytime I leave satisfied. The food is decent, and service is decent. Somtimes the service is hit of miss when its busy, but for the most part, its better than some other places with similar food.

Overall though its nothing too impressive. The decor is nice, but not grand. The food is good, but there is better, and the value and service are ok, but once again, there is better.

The reason why I enjoy Dinesty is its very clean, you are always greeted with the typical taiwanese girl greetings and good byes you see at other taiwanese places. I'll repeat...and again...and again...

Submitted Thursday, December 11, 2008 - 12:55am [Dine in]

of all the big name chinese seafood restaurants, I would say this place is a bit sub par. Its nicely decorated, in a nice location.

I have been here twice. The first time was great! the second time not so much so, but not bad by any means. Pricing is on par with most of its competitors...

As with the food...service was great the first time, and not so much so the second time. Overall I would still give a thumbs up...but just barely. Maybe I'll give it another go sometime soon

The AYCE food is is pretty horrid. Order any sushi and you can see that each piece of sushi is a different color...and usually luke warm. Dishes and the surroundings are 'acceptable' but not too clean. The servers I've gotten here are not bad though...quick and to the point. A good point for here is they never seem to forget orders.

Value is ok...its cheap, but its also not very good...so to each its own I guess.
