Matoi Sushi3025 Lougheed Hwy, Coquitlam
Great Japanese Restaurant in Coquitlam
Submitted Sunday, January 9, 2011 - 11:50am [Dine in]

It is hard to find authentic Japanese restaurant in Tri-City area. I usually test Udon/Soba noodles to judge the quality of food they serve. As broth is simple but has to be made from scratch, it reveals the time and effort (which translate to quality) put into preparation of the food. Matoi's soup passed with flying colors. My husband and I tried Maki Combo (huge portion), grilled eggplant, Spicy Mayo Prawns, and Tempura Udon. We were so full and could not finish it all. As I have not checked this site prior to going there, next I will definitely try their nigiri sushi and enjoy their fresh fish. The service was very attentive endless supply of green tea. They also have a great lunch menu with variety of grilled fish for reasonable price. I look forward to trying their lunch menu next time.

Nice Find
Submitted Sunday, January 9, 2011 - 11:29am [Dine in]

My husband and I walked by this place to go to our favorite eatery. A person sitting by the window had this awesome looking dish and the place was packed. All the good signs of good food. So we decided to try it. I can smell the great aroma of spices. We snagged a table when a couple stood up to leave. We ordered spicy noodle with fishcakes. OMG. It was just delicious. Prices being so reasonable (much cheaper than eating at food court in the mall), we decided have fritters as well. They were delicious. Only thing that I wish they can serve it warmer. We watched variety of dishes being served and people devouring food. It is no doubt in our minds that we will go back.

Love Japanese Sweets
Submitted Sunday, September 12, 2010 - 9:40am [Dine in]

I drove by several times but never occurred to stop and check it out. It is in the sleepy old downtown area of Port Moody that I had only stopped once or twice in past 10 years. However, it was two reviews caught my attention the other day and decided to stop by. I am so glad I did. The Japanese cakes are hard to find. I love them because I find that they do not use as much sugar.

I tried every one of creme caramel cups except for a cheese one (sold out on the day I was there). I loved them all!! It is in a generously sized cup and was only $2.50 each and 6 for $13. I don't know how they can make ends meet. Everything else was also reasonably priced and tasted good. Yes, they have samples and these nice Japanese ladies insisted on trying them all:-) I will definitely go back and try everything else.

Authentic Japanese Food
Submitted Sunday, September 12, 2010 - 9:18am [Dine in]

I have been going to Matsuzushi for many years including the time they were called Fuji-ya, a Japanese grocery store with small eatery. I love the variety and not just serving Sushi. So my husband and I cannot agree on just having sushi, we visit Matsuzushi. I love their Tempura-soba, box, and oden. It is authentic (classic) Japanese food which not everyone likes. I have taken my friends there and she tried Tempura Soba noodle for the first time in her life and loved it. So since then, she tried Tempura-soba in other pleaces but she claims Matsu's soup is the best so far. I have to admit the ambiance is definitely not what this place is about. The place is clean and someone said cafeteria style, I think that is a good way to describe the place. I go there for "FOOD" not for total restaurant experience.

Great food and definitely want to go back!
Submitted Sunday, September 12, 2010 - 8:39am [Dine in]

I was searching this site to find a restaurant that close to home but never been to. My husband and I tried Ding Hao last night after reading other people's reviews. When we arrived, despite it was Saturday night, place was very quiet. We hesitated for a moment but the place looked so clean and welcoming we decided to try. We tried spicy brisket noodle and dry noodle and their hand made pork and veggie dumplings. We were glad we tried ! I guess we came too early as people started to coming. My husband was the only non-Asian person entire time we were there. We will definitely go back and try other dishes.

Good Home Cooked Meal
Submitted Sunday, September 5, 2010 - 4:47pm [Dine in]

My husband and I love going to Coquitlam Grill. The food service is always prompt and food is awesome! We tried several dishes and have not had any disappointing dishes yet. As not too many restaurants in tri-city area serves "diner" type of food, we frequent there now. The fries are excellent. I purposefully order burgers and sandwiches to get fries:-) Food never disappoints us there. Once in awhile, you get a server not attentive enough but most of the time, they are very good, too. I hope they will stay for a long time as we are not planning to move any time soon.

Dim Sum
Submitted Sunday, September 5, 2010 - 4:34pm [Dine in]

I tried Dim Sum today. I would have not gone there if I have read other people's comments. However, I haven't, so I tried it. For the price, the food was good. We had 5 dishes in total, shrimp dumpling, siu mai, deep fried squid... and couple of other dishes. The place was old but carpet was clean. It did not have bad smell as others have commented. If you want a big portion for a cheap price, try it. I personally will go back but probably do take out.

Although I've been going there for past few years but just forgot to write about this place. It is in the location where I never expected to find Ramen place. I recommend Char Siu or Chanpon in Miso based soup. I love the Gyoza they serve as well. It is just like the one my mom used to make. This is the best Ramen in Tri-City!!!

Disappointing Service
Submitted Tuesday, September 1, 2009 - 9:21pm [Dine in]

This is not our first time that we had poor service at Horizons. We only go there for a special occasion. We had received a terrible service once long time ago and we have not gone back for a few years. However, we went back about a year ago. That time, we had a great dinner with great service. We decided to try again but another huge disappointment. For the money we pay at this restaurant, I do expect half decent service. After an appetizer, we sat for at least an hour for the main course to come. Meanwhile, the waiter only appeared once and just dropped a knife and left. He did not even apologize for the delay once. We will never go back until we hear otherwise.

It was bit disappointing
Submitted Thursday, May 7, 2009 - 8:47pm [Dine in]

My husband and I took our friends from Vancouver Island. We debated whether to go to the one in downtown or in Richmond. As our friends have early flight next day, they wanted to stay closer to YVR. I must say, I was slightly disappointed because food was not as good as other GUU in downtown. The flavour was bit flat. As it was our friends first time so, they had nothing to compare to, so they really enjoyed it. They never had Izakaya style Japanese food before.

I wish I live close by
Submitted Thursday, May 7, 2009 - 8:41pm [Dine in]

I love Beard Papa's Cream puffs. I had them in Japan and it is amazing. My friends from Vancouver Island wants to go there every time they come out here. I cannot believe some people don't appreciate this. On one hand, I wish I could live closer to get to it more often but on the other hand, I am far away enough that I won't be eating this every day. I gave rating 3 for ambiance because it is just a small palce in the food court. Even in Japan where the bakery originated, it is just a tiny place.

Best fish flown from Japan
Submitted Thursday, July 17, 2008 - 1:48am [Dine in]

I read the previous person's review and I totally agree. I tried Sanma which was recommended by owner as it is flown in from Japan and not frozen. The fish came with a couple of side dishes, pickles, miso soup and tamaki rice.

The quality of food is excellent. It taste like my mom's cooking and she is a really good cook. The only complaint that I have is the service is bit slow. According to my friend, it is often the case as they make everything fresh.

I tried their home made creme caramel, it was great and wish it was bigger! I will definitely go back.

Great Dim Sum
Submitted Monday, May 12, 2008 - 8:17pm [Dine in]

My husband and I frequent here for Dim Sum. The price is very reasonable, and food is excellent. It is always packed for Dim Sum. So go early. I love deep fried egg plant, shrimp dumpling, sticky rice.... you name it, everything taste great. I have taken my colleague there as well and they all enjoyed it.

Now that we became regular, hostess, I cannot remember her name but she is always cracking jokes and very friendly. (I am not Chinese and cannot say anything in Chinese except for shrimp dumbling "Ha Gow"). I love going there.

Authentic Japanese Food
Submitted Thursday, May 8, 2008 - 11:20pm [Dine in]

Those who wants to eat sushi, you have to go to Sushi restaurant. This is in the Nikkei Senior Centre and they serve wonderful Japanese food, grilled fish, pork cutlet, great tempura, Japanese noodles, etc. The service is incredibly fast and I have taken several friends both Japanese and non-Japanese, and they all loved it. Those who does not care for sushi but wants to try something different, this is a great alternative. Try it and you won't regret it. The price is very reasonable. $10 including tip, you get a great dinner.

Love everything I tried so far
Submitted Thursday, May 8, 2008 - 11:09pm [Dine in]

Although I don't live close by but if I have a chance to drive close by, I make a point of stopping there. I tried cheese cake both N.Y. style and European, I love them both. I also tried apple cake, apricot cake (my favorite) and pecan one. They are all so yummy. I also buy Spicy Chicken Roll. In a way, I am glad they are not close by.... because I will be worried about my weight because I love there cakes. I also like there chocolate cake. I have not yet tried their soup and other deli stuff. So I cannot say anything about it, but I highly recommend any of these cakes that I mentioned.

Great food but ....
Submitted Sunday, April 27, 2008 - 9:10pm [Dine in]

I went to this restaurant for the first time after I read the review on this website. Excellent Szechuan food which is rare to find in Tri-City area. I really enjoyed every dishes that we ordered. Unfortunately, at the end of our meal, the waitress told us tomorrow (April 28)is their last day. I hope they will find another location near by and start again. Portion was generous and I can still taste it in my mouth.
