Happy Birthday
Submitted Sunday, February 20, 2011 - 10:00pm [Dine in]

Our family went here tonight for dinner to celebrate my dad's 81st birthday. It's not actually in the Starlight casino, but in a plaza very near the casino. It has an elegant atmosphere, but it didn't feel "stuffy" at all. The staff were attentive and fun as they served us. Maybe, it was more relaxed because the restaurant was only half full on this Sunday night. The food was good. We ordered the set menu for dinner which included the cold platter, two crabs, and prawns. I think it will be on our list of family favourite restaurants.

I've also been here for dim sum and it was really busy. I think it's over-priced for dim sum but if you want a nice atmosphere to entertain your friends, then I would recommend it, or the place next door which they also own, Shang's Noodle House (which is a bit more casual).

Not a family favourite

We just took our father out for Father's day to this restaurant, because my father likes the dim sum here, but dinner is another story. The food was o.k. but everything else made the outing not so much fun, unless you like being packed in like sardines, having people jostling behind you with their chairs, and no air conditioning. It was a nice sunny day in Vancouver at 21 degrees, but who wants to sweat while you're eating dinner. They opened the door to let in the breeze and thank god, there was one from time to time, but otherwise it would have been stifling.

Just like the other reviews said, the service was poor and the bathrooms are disgusting. (Mind you, I'm used to Chinese restaurants not having very clean bathrooms so I avoid them as much as I can. I've maybe been to only one or two Chinese restaurants with decent bathrooms in my 40-something years in Vancouver but I guess I'm getting totally sidetracked here).

A little embarassing when we pulled out the old credit card and discovered that they only take debit or cash. Dad had to front us some cash!!! If we knew that, we would have brought in more cash but oh well, Happy Father's Day. At least, we had some laughs together.
