My partner and I had reservations for Thanksgiving night. I heard about this place through "Groupon". I purchased at $50 GC for $25 and was excited to try the restaurant out. Anticipating a busy night, we were surprised to arrive to only 2 other couples in the dining room. We were promtply seated and ordered our drinks from the large wine list. Not being a meat eater regularly, I decided to go for the lamb shank and my partner had the rack of lamb. Dishes arrived in due time. The portions were impressive! The flavours were great and the lamb was cooked perfectly - for both of us. The way we judge a great dinner is the conversation that we have during. There was very little conversation between myself and my partner, deeming this an impressive meal! We will definitely be back - for a very special occasion. It was about $100 for the two of us (having a few drinks and before the Groupon discount). Overall, a charming dinner. It was a bit wierd at times with so few people in the room, we felt like we were having dinner with all of them and that we were sharing conversation, but no biggie. I would've liked to have duck (it is a french restaurant) but was sad to see it not offered on the menu.
Went to the Sandbar yesterday after shopping at the Market. The patio was hopping, as expected, but we were able to be seated right away. Ordered some bevies, blue shell mussels and the scallop kebabs. Service was laid back and a tad slow, but was to be expected on this busy afternoon. We didn't mind, seeing as it was a sunny day! The mussels were in a curry broth which was devine! The scallop kebabs were delicious! Served with salmon eggs and a heavenly aioli. The scallops were grilled to perfection. Little mouthfuls of heaven:) Our server was excellent and engaging. This was our first time to The Sandbar in a long while and we have unanimously made this our new lunch "spot" when we are down shopping at the market. Would recommend this spot to anyone.
This is by far our favourite weeknight restaurant. We decided to order in this time, 2 small pizzas with 3 toppings special. The value was good, not too sure the exact price (I didn't pay), I think around $25 or something. Pizza is normally pizza, but this was great! Hot, homemade with actual toppings made with obvious care, not just slapped on. We called ahead of time to pick up and it was ready within 25 minutes. This is a really great place to have a casual dinner at.
Highly recommended to grab their take out menu and keep handy for weeknight cravings! They have countless specials (2 for 1 pizza, pasta, greek dinnners, steak....)
Came here recently with the in-laws, who have been regulars for years. Nice, clean restaurant with friendly staff. It was my first time dining here. I ordered the keftedes, which I have never had before then and I must say were excellent! The tzaziki was heavenly, soooo garlicky! The pita bread was good and the side dishes were of typical greek fare and were good too. The other members of my dining party had chicken and lamb souvlaki and dolmades. All which, by the lack of conversation, were enjoyed very much! The prices were very typical. The service was attentive and quick. I would definetly come back for more keftedes :)
My dining partner and I had a hankering for some Italian and found this place. I had the pasta puttanesca and he decided on the chicken penne. Both were great. The puttanesca was scrumptious and the portion was perfect. The chicken penne was okay, a little "soupy" for his taste and a bit skimpy on the chicken pieces, but good none the less. The house red wine paired well and the Modello washed down the complemntary foccacia well. Overall, was good. A bit pricey for what could've been made at home, but I guess the point of dinner dates is so one doesn't have to cook :) Our waitress was great, very bubbly. We got there and only 2 other couples were in the dining reoom, but as we tucked, in the dining room filled nicely. We may or may not be back...We do recommend though.
Went to Toshi's on feb 13th for the first time and again last weekend (due to an intense craving!). The place is small and we had to wait both times for quite some time to be seated but did no in anyway affect our night. The food was great in my opinion. The veggie gyozas were something different and really tasty. The tempura was great and the various rolls/nigiris we ordered were solid. On both occasions we were seated at the bar. This was okay, not so private or intimate for a dinner date but the food was good :) Never had a problem with service. Always attentive, quick, nice and willing to offer suggestions. Overall, no big complaints. It is what it is! Will definitely be back!
Went to Library Square Public House on Sautrday night for some pre-VIFF dinner. Upon entering, the place was fairly empty, given there was no Canucks game on or any events at GM Place, but still....Anyways, we were proptly met by a server who said "Sit anywhere" with no eyecontact. We were studying the menu and noticed that Saturdays domestic sleeves are only $3.40. We sat and waited some more. After a while our drink orders were taken. Then we waited. Waited.Waited.Again, the place was not busy and the only "large" group (6 people) had left, leaving about a dozen or so people (not tables) in the pub. Drinks came, we then placed our order for the Gorgonzola Burger and Swiss/Mushroom burgers. Then we waited. Waited. Waited some more. Food was decent, was lukewarem, good portion and tasted good. Service was slow slow slow! From start to finish we had 3 servers somehow...We did use an Entertainment coupon, so 2 burgers and 3 beers cost us less than $40. That was our only saving grace. The Stanley Park amber ale is highly recommended but be prepared to wait for it!
Went to Mazuya on Saturday night for an early dinner. My dining partner and I had an entertainment coupon for "this place", turns out that they've since switched owners. They did give us 10% off in lieu of the 2-for-1 entree listed on the coupon, because the restaurant has changed owners/names. Very nice of them. They did no need to do that. Anyways, we had the salmon sashimi, bento box B (salmon & tuna nigiri, tempura, salad, beef teriyaki) and the spicy tuna roll. Everything tasted wonderful, but the "spicy" tuna wasn't really spicy and had more of a sweet sauce on it. Still good but not exactly what we were expecting. The service was prompt and delightful. There was only 1 other diner in the restaurant when we were there, but some regulars trickled in for take-out and were welcomed with "Hellos!" and "How is your daughter/new job/boyfriend" and such. Great quiet place for a quick bite. However, my Dutchy dining partner did not speak too highly of the washroom...
Having driven by this place along Kingsway many times, we finally found a time to stop in. We were promptly greeted and seated. There was another large-ish group in the restaurant along with my partner and I. We went on the holiday monday for a late lunch. The service was a bit slow (from the time placing the order to receving our food) but the chef sent us out a complimentary yam fries appy! My dutchy dining partner settled on the 3 cheese burger and fries and I had the chicken wrap and seafood chowder. Being a self-proclaimed burger connisseur, my bf was delighted with his food. It was the perfect portion for him, as was my chicken wrap and soup for me. Mine was hot and the chowder was excellent! This place also seems to have live music/acts throughout the week, so next time we will be checking it out. Great un-pretentious food. I also remember seeing an ad of some sort for $10 burger & beer on Saturdays and tuesdays.......Our server was delightful and, aside from the long wait (we were in no hurry anyways) we were thouroughly impressed and thankful for the complimentary appy too. Oh yeah, they serve breakfast all day too!
I was treated to a wonderful suprise Valentine's Day dinner here. I had a mixed seafood dish which had scallops, salmon, prawns and monkfish on a bed of greens/potatoes. The seafood was perfectly done. My partner opted for the steak of some sort. He really enjoyed it. The service was great and the ambiance was wonderful. We were seated near the kitchen, but it was nice and private and offered a great candle-lit view of False Creek. It is pricey, but it is expected. I hope to go back again soon, but only for a very special occasion.
I enjoy coming to The Reef on lazy saturaday mornings for their Sam Lord's breakfast. It is always reliable and good, the lamb sausage is great. Service is spotty, especially if you sit out on the "patio". Coffee is great and a mimosa in the morning makes my day! The huevos rancheros were also quite good! I've been also for dinner, but prefer brunch. Their chicken wings have very little meat...
The Ms. Kitty's hot sauce is a must try! It is a constant staple in my fridge.
My family started ordering from this restaurant over a decade ago when it was conveniently located at the end of our street (it has since moved). We mostly get pizza, which is our family favourite. It is full of toppings and always great and arrives promptly. My personal favourite is their Greek pizza....and the All-dressed. They've recently renovated their location and is great for dine-in too. Typical Grrek fare. Portions are huge. My favourites are the roast lamb and the lamb souvlaki.
I have been several times and the food is delightful. I have been to Peru and this is almost as great as being there. The cebiche is great, lots of flavor. The aji de gallina is great, the ajiaco is filling, the papa de huancaina are hands down my favourite! Causa rellenos are great too. I have had many other dishes here and I have had no complaints. The hot sauce on the tables is OUT OF THIS WORLD good! Anyone who enjoys great homestyle cooking - no matter what your background - will love this. It is a feeling of home, wherever that may be. It may seem a tad pricey, but this is excellent food. The service is great, run by a husband and wife team. The area is not really "sought after" but if the food is this good, who cares?!?
Highly, highly recommended! They also play latin soaps on TV :) I don't know what they are saying, but it definetly adds to the expereince ;)
I've been 3 times to Thai Basil and have enjoyed the experience each time. Food is good, service was fast and friendly. The last time I did notice, however, the stinginess of the meat for the curry dish. There was hardly any, mostly veggies. Flavour was good. It is worth a try, and even more so with an entertainment coupon. Always greeted with a smile and accomodating feel by the servers. Water was refilled fast and without being intrusive and leftovers promptly packed.
Been to Nikkyu several times and each time was great. Food was good, service was prompt. My most recent visit was last week before the Whitecaps game. The restaurant was full inside so we sat outside. Food arrived just as fast as the previous times we've sat inside. My partner and I normally order a bento box (several to choose), beef yakisoba and a roll or two. We've Never been dissapointed and even though it is a bit of a drive for us, we elect to eat here for sushi. Good beer prices too! Recommended.
