Quality

I love Suchi has become a regular restaurant for both eat in and take out. A wide menu selection, quality, fresh healthy ingredients, and professional crafting make this a 3 times a week pleasure for me. The owners and staff remember my special requirements, without any reminder from me. I am always greeted as a friend more than a customer.

Overall outstanding

Ate on a Saturday evening, sat at the bar and despite the bartender being super busy he looked after me really well. God humoured, and attentive. The ambience was sometimes loud - it is a pub so this is expected. Food king crab legs very tasty. Overall a very satisfyingly experience.

Great Food, Great owner

Ate there this afternoon.

I am very picky about my restaurant experiences, atmosphere, friendliness of service, food taste, presentation and value, are all needed for a positive review. I had the Brown Stew chicken, which included rice and beans, a portion of potato salad, and a portion of green salad, It was mildly spiced, though I am positive I could have had a different dish that was hotly spiced. Definitely a generous plate.

What a pleasant owner, I had an interesting conversation about the Cayman Islands and the food, rums, and that character of each island. Restaurant and probably the Cayman Islands both worth a visit.

So a well deserved positive review.

Poor ambiance. Will not visit again
Submitted Friday, January 10, 2014 - 1:09am [Dine in]

I ate at Aldo's on a rainy Thursday evening. I was the only customer, and that contributed to the outstanding attentive service of the pleasant waiter. The food was just above average, I had the California salad, tasted fresh and flavourful, but had way too much lettuce in the mix. The veal scallopini with mushroom sauce was not quite as appetizing as I expected, with the strong mushroom sauce drowning any subtle flavours of the veal. The accompanying penne pasta with meat sauce was above average, fresh, on the slightly soft side of al dente, with a very tasty meat sauce. Prices are definitely on the high side.

Early on in the meal the owner came out of the kitchen, and sat at his own table opposite me - occasionally staring at me with an unfriendly look on his face, from time to time he would annoyingly, and loudly whistle with the background music. He also had intense, almost heated discussions in Italian with the waiter, agitating the pleasant mood of the waiter. No jolliness or welcome from the owner, unfriendly vibe. Very strange, and possibly partially explaining the emptiness of the restaurant. Poor ambiance. Will not visit again

Very positive experiences
Submitted Monday, November 26, 2012 - 11:05pm [Dine in]

I have eaten here five times; both solo, and with my son. I therefore can say I have basis for a balanced review.

The food has always been way above average - the last visit the calamari was truly excellent - very tender and the breading cooked to perfection.

The serving staff have consistently been friendly and attentive, without leaving me feeling they were intrusive. I saw them deal with a difficult situation at another table with aplomb.

Value: in this case you get the quality of food, service, and surroundings that you pay for, and incidentally they also give good portion sizes.

The decor is fresh and upmarket, and ambiance is pleasantly relaxing.

Multiple visits - every time a winner.

Disappointing lack of accomodation
Submitted Sunday, October 7, 2012 - 10:42pm [Dine in]

My son had surgery a few days before, and after home convalescence he just felt able to go out to eat. I decided as a treat for him, to use the 2 Groupon coupons that I had for this restaurant’s Prix fixe meal.

The fine print was: Limit 2 Groupons per table, Reservation required, Dine-in only.

I complied with the above conditions totally; making a 6.30pm reservation.

On arrival the restaurant was empty except for another pair of diners. My son was seated while I paid for parking. When I arrived at the table I was told the Prix fixe meal was off the menu: Thanksgiving meal menu was all there was, and I could not use my Groupon for that. I requested to talk to the manager, who would not budge from that position.

Groupons pre-state in the fine print if there are additional specific date or menu restrictions to the deal.

So a negative for the change of menu not providing the prix fixe meal without noting specific limitations in the Groupon

A negative for not allowing a direct substitution for the changed menu – a similarly price dining experience.

And a negative for just being general arses in the circumstances of my son's post surgery recovery.

Definitely not recommended.

Pleasantly Surprised
Submitted Wednesday, June 20, 2012 - 12:37pm [Dine in]

I had a Groupon to use, and called outside restaurant operating hours for a reservation for 7.30pm on Father's Day. A non-restaurant employee took the details, and assured me that he would pass the reservation to the restaurant - he sounded a bit flakey. So next day I checked about the reservation and sure enough No Reservation logged or even available at 7.30pm and the young lady on the phone while sympathetic but could not fit me in. I was reluctant to let it go so I asked to speak to a manager - the restaurant supervisor was apologetic and diplomatically dealt with offering me a table at 8.00pm instead. Problem solved.

Pleasant reception and immediate seating.

Service was attentive, friendly and not intrusive.

Food was excellent - possibly the best scallop appetizer I have had, and my steak was so tender that I did not need a steak knife to cut it.

The seating was arranged so that other diners could not be heard and although present they did not intrude
on our enjoyment.

One of the best evenings in recent memory.

Some good, some not so

Firstly the food quality rating deserves a four.

The service was acceptable, though initially I was beginning to feel neglected, seated and ignored - for which the waiter, without a prompt from me, apologized. The service rated a three; with the owner's customer interaction a four.

What brought the overall rating down was two-fold. Most of the menu items I ordered, were just not available. Sorry sir your selected appetizer is off, we are out of the wine you want, and we can't make you an espresso - our machine is broken. Was this just a busy Tuesday night anomaly, or a Fawlty Tower's - "Duck's off" moment? The food items I was served were of very good quality.

The second problem is that the main dining room is intrinsically so sonically reflective - all hard sound-reflecting surfaces, with little sound absorption. If there is anyone with an annoyingly loud or grating voice close to you, they also become your unwanted dinner companions, you can't help but hear them. Well, two tables away I had two obnoxious loud unwanted companions. They would not have not been so intrusive, if the room's construction materials had naturally absorbed some of their conversation. I suspect that magnitude of this sound amplifying effect varies from table position to table position. There are ways to fix the room's sound problems without throwing buckets of money at it, so atmosphere gets a two.

Without these two problems the overall dining experience would have rated a four. I'll probably return and see if the dining experience improves.

Service was pleasant and helpful
Submitted Friday, July 22, 2011 - 2:28am [Dine in]

Tried the food straight after driving through the border into Canada. Derby's have quite a few well priced food and drink specials. The house burger was tasty, but the accompanying fries were limp - cooked at too low a temperature, and the appetizer onion rings were greasy spoon, oil change type greasy. When I mentioned that the rings were way too greasy for me, the server offered to make a substitution. I chose the crab cakes which were excellent and recommendable. The creme brule was not 4 or 5 star, but only cost $4. Overall I would return next time, and then I will skip the onion rings, I will ask for any fries well done, and have chocolate mousse, or apple pie for dessert. Good value. Friendly accommodating service. Highs and lows of the food equal mediocre.

The ambience sizzled
Submitted Monday, February 4, 2008 - 9:42pm [Dine in]

My complements to the designer, construction crew, and the live entertainers. The decor and ambiance were of very good quality -

Our server whilst passably competent, was lacking in friendliness, and appeared to have left home without his personality. It's probably in the left baggage, at some station along his journey of life.

Whilst acknowledging that the word "tower" applied to my crab appetizer from the $35 per person "Dine out Vancouver" menu, was not be construed as a literal description, a small splodge would have been closer to truth in advertising. A better menu description "Crab small splodge".

My steak whilst small, was tender and almost perfectly cooked, however the accompanying scalloped potatoes were so undercooked and flavourless; that anyone buying a supermarket instant packet, and following directions could have improved on them - thankfully that portion was also small!

My date's order of duck breast turned out to be mainly duck leg, and an overcooked leg at that.

I wish I could have also said "my compliments to the chef and server" however ..................

Took advantage of the Dine-out-Vancouver special, on from January 16 - February 3, 2008. We both enjoyed our selections. The Rock salt chili prawns “shell on” with sweet & sour dip, crackling pork rack chop with garlic mashed potatoes, and chocolate mousse were especially satisfying on so many levels. Will return.

Have dined there on three separate occasions. every time the food was cooked to perfection, and the service genuinely friendly with the right amount of attentiveness. I tried but I really can't fault it. All good.
