Dine Out Disappointing!
Submitted Sunday, February 1, 2009 - 2:23pm [Dine in]

We went to Dine Out Vancouver last night with another couple. None of us had ever been to Il Giardinos for dinner. Overall, the experience was decent, not great and not poor. For the money, it was rather disappointing considering we had heard good things about Il Giardinos.

For the appetizer, three of us had the Parmesan-Lemon Crusted Scallop and Grilled Jumbo Prawn Garlic Butter with leeks saffron risotto and the wife had the Balsamic Caramelized Fig Arugula Watercress Mix Salad
with shaved provolone & aged balsamic. The scallop and prawn was quite tasty; the salad was another uneventful green salad.

For the mains, the guys had the Angus Beef Braised Short Ribs
with polenta, caramelized shallots, roasted carrots
& steamed broccolini. The shallots and vegs were overdone and tasteless. The beef was rich and melted in your mouth; not bad. The wife had the pasta Cannelloni Ricotta Cheese & Spinach Florentine portion was small (we were warned) and not something she would have again. The other spouse enjoyed the seared Fillet of Arctic Char Vegetable Tartina pomme parigine & braised cabbage. The creme brulee and mousse were standard fare. We each had a glass of wine from the wine list. The recommended wine pairings were not what we would have picked.

The service was poor. Our server was abrupt and rude. We had to ask to be served water and wine, and the server was rude with the bill. The food was not well presented and at times, things seem very rushed.

The restaurant itself was very nicely decorated in in Italia old. Lighting and ambience was just right, even though it was a very busy Saturday night. However, the poor service overshadowed what would have been a nice evening out.

Dine Out 2008
Submitted Sunday, January 25, 2009 - 11:11am [Dine in]

First time at West - all four of us having the Dine Out Menu with wine pairings.
Bread was in abundance and replaced with frequency. Appetizers, meals and dessert were all explained when brought to the table as was the wine. I personally felt that the risotto was one of the best I had ever eaten - fantastic! Food was brought out in a timely manner, not too slow nor too fast.
Everyone really enjoyed their dinner and can't wait to go back.
The overall experience was wonderful and look forward to returning again.

Dine out so and so....
Submitted Sunday, January 25, 2009 - 10:24am [Dine in]

We and another couple did the DOV at DB last night. For us, it was our first time at DB (previously Feenies). To summarize, we probably would not go back to as the food and service were so and so...not memorable.

We each had a different appetizer and they were passable. Bread was not in abundance. We had 2 bottles of wine which we selected and most happy with.

Because of the limited selection of the Dine Out menu, we all had the beef "Pot Au Feu" w/ bone marrow, carrot, turnip, & onion. We were disappointed with It as it wasn't tasty and memorable & did not make us want to order it ever again. The wife had the Citrus Floating Island dessert - Pink Praline w/ Vanilla Creme Anglaise. She didn't like it as it had something that looked like meringue in it. I tried the Bittersweet Chocolate Coupe - Chocolate Rice Crispy w/ coffee ice cream. It was OK but not exciting. Overall, for $80 each, it wasn't a memorable foodey experience. For the same price, our DOV experience at West was much more memorable.

We were there for 2.5 hours, and didn't feel we had to leave within a certain time limit.

As Advertised...

Our expectations were met after reading the reviews from others. I would go again as the food was quite tasty and fresh. Better than most Thai restaurants I have been to. In particular, the pad thai was tasty and the spicy beef was great!! Appies were good. All of the dishes were around $15-16 so it was a little pricier than most Thai restaurants. The service was good and the waitresses kept our water glasses filled. But it wasn't busy neither.

Great evening, Great food
Submitted Sunday, November 9, 2008 - 9:21am [Dine in]

Eight of us went to Goldfish for an early reservation on Saturday night. It wasn't busy yet, but got very busy as the evening went on. When we left, the bar full and busy, and the restaurant was full. The wife and I had been here about a year ago and the other 3 couples had never been. They were very impressed with the ambiance of the bar and restaurant. They loved the decoration and lighting and the various themes in different areas of the restaurant. Very trendy. The music was not intrusive and volume as just right to alllow good conversation.

The food was very good and better than when we last ate here. The portions were a good size and everything was tasty. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Three had the Shanghai noodles and it was good. The short rib appy was moist, tasty and melted in your mouth. The salsa sauce with the oyster appy was particulary good and had a good bite. Others had the lamb shank, rib-eye steak and the ahi tuna. Everyone had dessert and again very good. The deep fried banana spring rolls and Citrus Cheescake were a highlight. There were not complaints and everyone were complimentary of the food. The wine and cocktail list was extensive and everyone enjoyed their beverages.

The service was excellent. The server was very efficient, attenative and friendly. The staff removed and replaced plates and cutlery promptly and everything went smoothly.

Overall, a very enjoyable evening and would definitely return again.

Went tonight for a quick dinner after work. Been here several times, but first time trying rolls and sashimi. Huge portions and quite good.
The place was very busy, service better than usual. Line out the door.
Would highly recommend this place for a great value.
The place is clean and basic. Ambiance is very loud.
Definitely a must!!

Dim Sum Very Good
Submitted Sunday, September 21, 2008 - 7:53pm [Dine in]

As in previous reviews, dim sum is plentiful and very good. Service was good too. We arrived at 1030 and the place was full. A short wait to get in. As this was our first time to Happy Valley, we tried the basic dim sum dishes of Har Gau, Siu Mai, sticky rice in lotus leaf, stir fried sticky rice, and spring roll with shrimp. All were very good. Servings were huge. Would go there again and try something different.

Food OK
Submitted Sunday, August 31, 2008 - 8:56pm [Dine in]

Went to Tojo's yesterday. Food was a cut above most sushi restaurants I have eaten at, however not as good as I expected.

For the price, I expected a lot more that I got. The service was so..so. The waitress was pushy and rude! She pushed the omesake and told people to stop talking so she could tell us the specials.

Rob Feenie didn't make a difference!!
Submitted Sunday, August 31, 2008 - 8:49pm [Dine in]

Went for a light dinner tonight and the food was questionable and service the same!!
Wife had a salad and the lettuce was old and slimy...Told the waitress who told the manager. My Kung Pow was OK. The noodels were overdone and not much else.

We didn't have to pay for the salad, but the Manager didn't have the decency to come by and say anything.

Prime Rib the Best!!
Submitted Sunday, January 20, 2008 - 8:56pm [Dine in]

Recently had dinner at the Burnaby Milestone. As usual, their prime rib is the best in the lower mainland. Other meals are pretty good too. Food quality is consistently great!! Service is adequate, but the hostesses could be more attentive and chat between themselves less.
