Nando's at its best
Submitted Sunday, March 25, 2012 - 10:04pm [Dine in]

We have been to a few Nando's places and this is clearly a cut above the rest. The service was unexpectedly wonderful. We ordered a variety platters with Peri fries and Peri Vegetables. The meat was tender and perfectly cooked. The vegetables were nicely grilled. What can I say, we love spicy food and extra hot Peri-Peri.

I wanted to try this restaurant for a while since I found out that the restaurant has been around for many years and almost historical. I also read the review that they served a good country style Chinese food. I was disappointed. The food was not that good (oily) and the prices are high. In my opinion, the prices are much higher than an average Chinese restaurant. Especially, in China town area where you can get a better quality food with much lower price. I will not go back again.

Good Value on Specials
Submitted Sunday, March 25, 2012 - 9:30pm [Dine in]

We saw the sign, 30% off on daily specials many times and decided to check it out. Daily specials for that day were Stanley Park roll and grilled scallop. We also ordered a few items from the menu. The rolls were big and delicious. The sushi rice is pink because they use combination of beet, red cabbage and blue berry juice to sweeten the rice instead of sugar. We are happy with both the food and the service. It was during the week so the restaurant was not too busy and the server was quite nice and informative. We are looking forward to try some of the unique Okonomi specials again.

The soup is bland
Submitted Sunday, March 25, 2012 - 9:08pm [Dine in]

I am not sure why this place got good reviews on the food. I have been there at least twice and I was disappointed on both food and service. OK, I don't really expect good service in Vietnamese Pho restaurant but I do except a decent soup. The chicken soup I ordered was really bland and I had to add a lot of oyster/hot source so that I can finish it. The place is quite busy though. Don't understand it considering there are many better Vietnamese restaurants around Kingsway area. I don't think I will be going back again.

Not so clean!
Submitted Tuesday, September 16, 2008 - 10:58pm [Dine in]

I have been to white spot restaurants at different locations in greater Vancouver. I did not expect much from these restaurants but I do expect decent food and clean environment. I found this one in Oakridge mall to be quite disappointing. The floor was dirty. The water glasses were dirty and we had to ask for the clean ones. The server was friendly but the portions were smaller than the ones from other location. We knew this because two of us ordered the same items that we had from the other location. Overall, we did not really enjoy the experience there. May be there is a management issues with this place since menu is the same for all white spot locations in greater Vancouver area and also a lot cleaner.

Delicious Southern Indian Dishes
Submitted Tuesday, September 16, 2008 - 10:39pm [Dine in]

I have been to this restaurant twice with friends and I found the food to be very good both times. I really enjoy South Indian cuisine and have been looking for South Indian restaurant around the neighborhood for a while. I am quite happy when I found this place. The last time, we were there we ordered Chicken tikka masala, Chicken Lurma, Biryani, Sambar Vadal and South Indian coffee. All the dishes were quite wonderful. We also ordered Fish Pakoras and it was delicious. If you are looking for South Indian food, this is a good place to try.

Good Chinese dinner
Submitted Tuesday, September 16, 2008 - 10:15pm [Dine in]

We went to this restaurant on Monday evening for dinner. The place is a small, mom and pop place. We ordered Xiao Long Bao (Shanghai dumplings), Beef pan cake rolls, crispy rice in hot and sour soup and Spinach with dried shrimp dish. The food was really delicious. I liked all the dishes except the Spinach. Next time, I will order different vegetable dish. Overall, we really enjoy the food. I will go back again and recommend others to give it a try.

Long wait for food
Submitted Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 12:19am [Dine in]

I have been wanting to try out this place after reading excellent reviews from this site. I managed to get two friends to go with me on one Friday evening. I got to the place early before 5 since we got off early that day. The restaurant was not busy just us. To our surprise, the service was very very slow. We each ordered tea/bubble tea and something to eat. I ordered Tuna, my friends ordered chicken dish and beef. Mine came first, and I waited for others to arrive so that we can start eating. We had to wait around 10-15 at least for the beef dish to arrive. Then another 15 minutes wait for the chicken. I have never been to the restaurant which served dishes for the same table with that much of the long time intervals in between dishes. The food tasted quite good though cold by the time we got to eat. We also ordered upside down cheese cake which was really good. I liked my fresh fruit tea but my friends ordered regular ones and they said there was nothing fancy about it. My friends said that they will never go back again. For me, I don't mind going back to try more fresh fruit tea but wouldn't go back for food (don't want the wait).

Good spicy food on a rainy day
Submitted Tuesday, March 18, 2008 - 1:03am [Dine in]

I tried Simba restaurant more than a year ago with a few friends and really liked it. This time, I went with two of my friends and one of them had been to Simba with me the first time. Two of us liked the food. My other friend was not impressed. He said, it is not really African...it is mostly East Indian food and also a bit pricey. Never the less, we really enjoyed the food. We ordered deep fried Cassava root, chicken kebab, muchuzi ku ku (chicken with tomato sauce and tons of spices), kidney beans curry, Lamu cheese cake and Raas Malai (baked Ricotta cheese soaked in cream). I enjoyed all the dishes and dessert.

Mexican take out
Submitted Tuesday, March 18, 2008 - 12:43am [Dine in]

I have been looking for a good Mexican restaurant to try in Vancouver. I came across that restaurant while checking this web site and figured I should give it a try one day. That one day came when I was really craving for Mexican and all my friends are busy. So I went and got the take out order. I ordered a Mexican plate (one enchilada, roja, one verde, one beef tostada & one tamal). I had to wait for the food for a while even after I came back 20 minutes later as they suggested. The owner was very friendly, he apologized for the wait and even drew cartoon characters of him and his wife saying "Thanks" on my take out box. The food I found was really good. The salsa was excellent. It is worth the wait. I will definitely try to go back again to try different dishes.

It is OK
Submitted Tuesday, March 18, 2008 - 12:29am [Dine in]

We went to Lhy Thai for dinner with high expectations. I should learn by now, not to have high expectations based on reviews but I can't help it. We ordered Papaya salad, Tom Yum Gai (Thai hot and sour soup) and Moo Ga-Tiam (Pork fried with garlic, ground pepper, topped with green onion and cilantro). We both really liked Moo Ga-Tiam and my friend liked Tom Yum Gai. We both are disappointed with papaya salad. We also found that the servings were small. Based on what we had so far, we both prefer Sandar' Thai Garden in Surrey over Lhy Thai. However, Lhy Thai has a broader menu.

Unique decor and good dessert
Submitted Tuesday, March 18, 2008 - 12:03am [Dine in]

I went to the sweet revenge with a good friend of mine for late night dessert fix. We got there around 9 pm and the place was packed. It was a really small place with red walls and also a bit dark. Although the place was cozy it was also a bit cramp. I ordered the tea served with liquor and the chocolate cake. The cake tasted very light and delicious. My friend ordered chi tea and some creamy dessert that I don't remember the name. It could be a kind of cream brule. I tried some of hers and really liked it too. It is not a place for people to sit down sip on tea/coffee and talk for hours. There is a time limit since it is very popular.

Great expectations
Submitted Monday, March 17, 2008 - 11:45pm [Dine in]

Four of us ventured out to Rekado with great expectations because of the good reviews. Adobo special was the best of all the dishes that we ordered. Mango salad was ok but small portion. Milk fish belly had a lot of bones in it. We shouldn't have ordered it since none of us liked the bones. Mini-turon/coffee cake combo was very delicious however halo-halo disappointed us. It stated that the desert was made with shaved ice but the one we got was with crushed ice. Not that we are picky, there is a big difference in texture between the shaved ice and crushed ice. Shaved ice will pick up the sweets and flavors surrounding and melts in your mouth. Over all, we enjoy the dishes but we think the restaurant is a bit over-rated.

Dinner Buffet
Submitted Monday, February 25, 2008 - 10:39pm [Dine in]

I went with a friend to try out the food. We both went for dinner buffet ($16.95). There were decent number of dishes and the food was tasty. My only complaint is that the food is a bit cold. I would like to have my Indian food to be hot/warm. Saffron rice and biryani rice were a bit dry. I think I will enjoy the food more if I try the lunch buffet for $10.95. I was told that the lunch buffet has almost the same selections as dinner but dinner buffet usually has sea food dish. The day that we tried, there was no sea food selection. It could be because it was Monday night.

I have been there on a few occasions and the food has been average to very good. The view is spectacular especially for lunch on sunny days. I really enjoyed rainbow trout with Yukon potatoes. The desserts are very delicious.

Good authentic Thai food
Submitted Thursday, February 21, 2008 - 10:54pm [Dine in]

I have been to this restaurant a few times with friends. We all like the food there. I have been to Thailand a few times and familiar with good Thai food. I was a bit surprised to find a thai restaurant that serves good authentic thai cuisine in Surrey. The food is excellent and ambiance is warm and welcoming. My favorite dishes are Tom Yam Gai (Thai hot and sour soup with chicken), Papaya Salad and Kaow Pad Supparod (fried rice with chicken, pineapple, egg, shrimp, cashews and raisins). My friends really enjoy their Red curry, Green curry and Pad Thai.

Dine out experience
Submitted Saturday, February 2, 2008 - 2:59pm [Dine in]

I went to Nyala for Dine out Vancouver event. It was a disappointing experience for me. The owner could have been more friendly. The chicken that I got had no taste. It was actually quite bad that if I had not been quite hungry, I wouldn't have eaten it. The dessert, a cheese cake slice was very small. The restaurant was so dark that I couldn't even see the food that I was eating. I don't think they want any repeat business after dine out.
