Papaya Hut - thumbs down
Submitted Monday, May 31, 2010 - 1:09pm [Dine in]

First of all, i am a huge Thai food fan but this turned me off and little joints for quite some time. I dont know how many times I have driven past this little tucked away place on Burrad but I thought one day I would give a go with a friend. We went with an entertainment coupon (dont we all like deals) and we ordered some standard Thai items thinking you can't go wrong; well shocking apparently you can. We didn't order anything too crazy, a simple curry, a pad thai ...etc but it was not good at all. No flavours, not fresh ingredients, food was warm, atmosphere was poor and loud with Burrad traffic, ...etc, Even with the entertainment coupon it was not worth it.

Overall, not worth the visit if you are a Thai fan.

Cimona Cafe3791 Bayview Street, #210, Richmond
A seaside diner

There are not too many places in Steveston that you can go for a causal meal. I've been going to Cimona for years now and live in the area. I frequent Cimona at least twice a month (mainly for breakfast - have never been to lunch or dinner) but there breakfasts are great. They provide healthier options and the service is outstanding.

Cimona is that place that is always full but you never have to wait more than 5 minutes. There is not much seating inside (guessing about 40) but if you come with by yourself, a party of two or four - it easily accomadates, getting in larger then four you may lose some of your intimate feel with your group. They boast a little patio that overlooks the heaping crowds down in the village. Although minimal waterview, its attracts people because of the solid food, value, and service. Although a bit old in style it does not lack character - it is one of those places that I dont think needs updating cause 'it aint broken."

Overall, if you want a great weekend breakfast with great service and a casual feel - Cimona is your place to come too.

Guu Original838 Thurlow St, Vancouver
A gem in Vancouver

if you want a great night out with creativity and honest too good food - go to Guu. Guu is one of those secrets of Vancouver that if someone didn't tell you about you would not know. A friend told me about Guu years ago and I have been a loyal patron since. When people ask me about 'something' different and fun I always mention Guu.

This place is so popular that my only feedback is that if you dont get their once they open then you will be standing around for a while till seats come available. But then again, i guess standing around to get into some great eats is a testiment to their success.

I love their diversity in menu and portion sizes are decent. Guu is "goooooood" thing

Lombardo's Ristorante and Pizzeria1641 Commercial, #120, Vancouver
Best Pizza in town hands down
Submitted Monday, May 31, 2010 - 12:18pm [Dine in]

I've tried a lot of pizza in town but by far Lomdardo's has the best! I've been going to Lombardo's for years and ever since that first bite they have been my choice, and lets be honest, in Vancouver there are alot of pizza joints.

I have verbally recommended Lombardo's for years but I think the greatest challenge is finding it. If you can somehow explain that its in the little mall - everything is gravy from there on in. The atmosphere is good but it does look a bit awkward when you first walk in to the mall but once you are seated the 'mall-feel' its quickly forgotten.

And for sure try their salads - the dressing will keep you coming back to get this healthy starter. What I have also enjoyed is the calazones. Wow, the value is there for sure and will surely feed any hungry individual.

Overall, a great place for family gathering and even for the mid-week dinner.

Terracotta Modern Chinese52 Alexander Street, Vancouver
A great winning combonation of food, atmosphere and value - for sure come and you will not be dissappointed

I have been here twice in the last month and there is nothing short of a great night out of food and value. To start off, when you first enter you are pleasently welcomed into a open bar area that provides ample room for socializing. Although I sat upstairs for dinner, I was lucky enough to meet one of the owners and be given a tour of the new establishment. Although upstairs is not that big, throughout the dinner experience I never felt like I was in a small place. The decor is clean, crips, modern and welcoming - perfect for a date night. The prize seating area for sure is downstairs where a very decent size group of I am guessing 40 could easily be accomadated. Here it boasts a grand table that displays the traditions of chinese art but the taste of modern life.

I tried quite a few items on the menu but if you go for sure try these: the Short Rib Sliders (a nice chinese twist on burgers), Crispy Won tons... all I have to say is wow!, Shrimp Bean Curd Rolls.... elegant and bursting with flavours and the shrimp was an amazing size, Szechaun Green Beans was traditional with great chinese flavours. For dessert for sure try the Tapioca Happy Ending .... just trust me, its the perfect ending (I had to order another one). To accompany all of these great flavours I would highly recommend their signature drink; Chivas and Green Tea. It sounds like a different mix (scotch and green tea) but your first for sure not be your last... its a winner!

Whether it be a simple night out or a birthday party, Terracotta has the right formula for a great night out. Although not a ton of seating, you will be pleasently surprised of how many people it can seat. I'll be back for sure ...
