Delicious Vegetarian food!!
Submitted Saturday, July 7, 2012 - 12:59am [Dine in]

I ate at Po Kong for the second time last night, as part of a group event. We had several courses of delicious dishes. My favourites were the "chicken" cutlets with orange sauce and the spicy green beans. The service was great and the owners even made a charitable contribution for the event. We'll be back!

Delicious meal enjoyed by all
Submitted Monday, June 11, 2012 - 7:01pm [Dine in]

We tried this place for dinner yesterday after enjoying Italian Day on the Drive. I was quite impressed by the quality of the food. I had a tobago chicken wrap that had just the right amount of spiciness and flavour, and had a good portion of chicken in it. I ordered a salad for my side, which was a nice mixture of greens that were lightly dressed in a flavourful dressing. Unfortunately they were out of plantain chips so we didn't get to try them. My husband had a tofu curry which he enjoyed. It was nice to see several vegan options on the menu for hubby. We'll be back.

Very sad to see they are closed
Submitted Thursday, May 3, 2012 - 10:23pm [Take-out]

This review is for the last takeout I had from FujiSushi, which was about 2 weeks ago. I love this place and have been going there since it opened, and was in a previous location, also at Burquitlam plaza.

They have the best sushi I've tasted, always fresh, and I like how their rice isn't overly sweet like in every other local sushi place I've been to.

I stopped by there today for dinner and they were closed. The sign on the door said they were told by Translink to leave the premises by the end of April to make way for the Evergreen line.

Their web site says they are looking for a new location to reopen again. I hope they do, it was great food and I'm really going to miss my sushi fix from Fuji Sushi!

Very good good and serving size
Submitted Tuesday, May 1, 2012 - 3:22pm [Take-out]

We've ordered takeout from here a few times, always delicious. I especially like the chicken korma. The samosas are very good too, light and crispy and tasty. Every entree comes with a container of rice. Good value for the money.

We have eaten in the restaurant once. It was fine, the ambiance was just OK, and the serving size seemed smaller than the takeout. The service was excellent.

Highly recommended!

Disappointing Thanksgiving meal
Submitted Monday, October 17, 2011 - 12:42am [Dine in]

We went here for the advertised Thanksgiving meal. It was $25 for a turkey dinner with all the fixings plus a caramel apple crisp for dessert. Well, the aparagus was very good. The cranberries were tart, sweet and spicy, which were nice. Those were the good parts. The turkey had a bit of a deli flavour and texture to it, kind of like those in frozen dinners. Not like real roast turkey. The garlic mashed potatoes were tasty, but pretty lumpy. There was no gravy with the turkey. The stuffing was kind of dried out, with separated somewhat hardened bread cubes, and bits of cooked sausage.

To their credit, when I complained, the server told the manager about it, and they comped my meal. She then said she would bring dessert, but unfortunately they were sold out of the apple crisp. So I was brought a chocolate torte. The filling was tasty but the crust was a bit stale.

The service overall was quite good, nothing wrong with that. But the food, unfortunately, was not up to par.

Dependable, tasty, and good for you!
Submitted Monday, October 17, 2011 - 12:33am [Dine in]

We had a very satisfying meal at Rebar on Thanksgiving weekend. There was a bit of a wait on the Saturday night, but it was worth it. We started off with some of their fresh juice concoctions. I had one made with apple, pineapple, and cucumber. I usually find juices a bit sweet for me but this one was not, instead it was a very refreshing beverage, yum!

For my meal I had the spicy soba noodle salad which has assorted vegetables, like cucumber and avocado, as well as cashews and other good stuff. I'm glad I got the dressing on the side because it was very hot! But it worked well with the salad and the combination was delicious! I'm not that much of a salad person but this one was very tasty and satisfying. My husband had the Monk's curry. There's an ingredient in it that I'm not fond of, I think it's the thai basil. But he really enjoyed the dish.

One of the other reviewers complained that the menu hasn't changed much over the years and that it's all in the cookbook. That may be the case (I have the cookbook too), but many of the recipes are quite time consuming to prepare, and it's a lot easier to have them do it for you, and do it right!

Delicious fresh seafood - local with amazing flavour
Submitted Monday, October 17, 2011 - 12:22am [Dine in]

I tried Joe's while visiting Victoria on Thanksgiving weekend. I was originally headed over to try Red Fish Blue Fish, but was disappointed to find it had closed early. Joe's was located right across the parking lot, and also on the water so I walked over to check it out. I'm sure glad I did! They had a very tasty sounding menu with lots of local seafood. I tried the halibut tacos. The tacos are actually a half flour tortilla folded into a cone. The filling was amazing. Fresh grilled halibut, seasoned just right, with a spicy filling of potatoes, tomatoes & arugula. It came with fresh made coleslaw which was also great.

Once you order you are given a buzzer and you grab a seat. There are wood tables and chairs, by the water to sit at. It's covered, which would be great for a rainy day. You are buzzed when your meal is ready.

Next time I'm in Victoria I'll definitely be back. Wish we had something similar where I live in Vancouver!

Small place but lively with fresh tasty food
Submitted Thursday, June 30, 2011 - 5:16pm [Dine in]

We tried this place one Saturday night in May. It is quite small inside and the you are really crammed in there with other diners. But the food was fresh and tasty, the service good, and energetic live music to boot! I tried a few of the many types of tacos, which were pretty good. The salsa bar was great, with so many to try. The margarita was one of the best I've had - tasted like real fresh limes instead of the fake mixes many places use. It's not a fancy place, but overall enjoyable and we'll be back.

Tasty Meal
Submitted Wednesday, June 29, 2011 - 1:39pm [Dine in]

Went there for dinner recently. It was quite busy due to recent Groupons, so the service was a bit slow. However the food was pretty good. I ordered the chicken in a coconut sauce, with vegetables, rice and naan on the side. Really good chicken in a nice sauce. Wasn't so crazy about the mixed vegetables, a bit too much cheese in them. The rice and naan were good. My husband had a chana masala which we enjoyed. Also, a mango lassi was delish.

Delicious, we'll be back!
Submitted Friday, November 26, 2010 - 1:58am [Dine in]

Tried this place for the first time last weekend and was very impressed. The food was delicious and the service very attentive. I had dined at this location before when it was Bo Kong but found it was nothing to write home about. Now that it is Whole, it is something to write about!

We started with a wonton soup, which was fantastic. The filling was very tasty. For entrees we had the orange veggie chicken cutlets (crisp and yummy), curried hot pot with mushroom balls (delish!) and a black bean rolled bean curd skin dish (my husband really liked it, I'm not a fan of this type of bean curd).

We definitely will be back to try some more dishes.

Tried this place for dinner for the first time about 2 weeks ago. The service was excellent. The menu selection was very good, and even my vegan husband found several options. We were in a rush and I ordered a miso soup and a few rolls. Service was quick and attentive. However I found the rolls to be so-so. Mainly because I found their rice to be a bit on the sweet side, which I don't like. Some places use more sugar than others, and I'm not a fan of that kind.

Not impressed
Submitted Monday, August 30, 2010 - 12:46am [Dine in]

The two of us ate dinner there earlier this month. I have enjoyed meals at other Milestones but this meal was a dud. The margarita I ordered was so salty I sent it back. It was as if salt had been poured in the drink instead of just placed around the rim of the glass. They brought me another one, without salt anywhere. It was better. My dh who is vegan asked if there was any dairy in the veggie burger. The server came back and assured him it was vegan. So he asked that there be no dairy on the burger either. When he got it, they had put mayonnaise on the bun. True, mayonnaise isn't dairy, but it's not vegan either. My dish came with rice. It was good at first, until I got to the crunchy overcooked/dried out parts, which was a good portion. I don't think we'll be back.

Very tasty vegetarian and vegan foods!
Submitted Monday, August 30, 2010 - 12:38am [Dine in]

I am a regular at the Paradise, both for dine-in and takeout. They have the most interesting selection of veggie meat type dishes, with variety enough to please those on all diets. I love their tofu in black bean sauce, and I'm not really a tofu fan. For appies, their fresh spring rolls (really salad rolls) with peanut sauce are great, as are their BBQ "chicken". The latter are little deep fried tasty treats that come with a sweet hot chili sauce. I could eat them every day! Others faves are the stir fried chow mein and the broccoli veggie chicken with black bean sauce. You have to try and see what you like. I'm not that much of fan of their veggie fish dishes. The vegan cheese cake is delicious!

The place is small and has been nicely remodeled in the last year or two. There is a shelf with promotional materials for vegan/vegetarian eating (self-serve), as well as a video channel that is often playing. The ladies who work there are very nice.

Excellent group dinner
Submitted Sunday, August 1, 2010 - 7:48pm [Dine in]

Although we had never been to this Milestones, we booked a group of 14 for a wedding rehearsal dinner last month. It was a great choice. The food was delicious and there were so many tempting choices on the menu. The staff were prompt and friendly. And they even gave a complimentary dessert with sparklers to the bride and groom to be. We'll definitely be back.

A symphony of flavours, and satisfaction for my tummy!
Submitted Wednesday, May 19, 2010 - 6:23pm [Dine in]

I love this place! The food is always like gourmet comfort food. So many interesting and amazing flavours and textures that compliment each other so well. And not some West Coast minimalist type of meal where you leave hungry - the meals are filling and satisfying. I've been very pleased with every dish I've ordered off the daily fresh choices list on the board. And I really like that there are vegan choices for my vegan spouse. We always share the vegan dessert and they are usually fantastic! Wish I lived closer, I would go there more often.

Tried this place out on a weekday afternoon last week with a couple friends. We were seated and served quickly. We were practically bombarded with food carts- lots to choose from and the food was delicious. They also quickly took and delivered requests. Very reasonably priced, I'll be back!

Excellent portions and lovely ambiance
Submitted Thursday, April 23, 2009 - 7:12pm [Dine in]

I have tried this place recently for both dine in and takeout. The portions for the combos were huge, and the food was really good. For takeout I tried the teriyaki chicken lunch bento for 7.95. The chicken was delicious, came with rice, bean sprouts, sauce, and a few slivers of vegetables. Also included was a salad, selection of tempura, 4 sushi rolls (california & dynamite), some edamame, and a couple other small appetizer pieces (cooked squash piece etc). I had leftovers for dinner.

The atmosphere in the restaurant was very nice with the cherry blossom trees and lighting. The serving bowls, plates, teapots and so on were also very nice.

Accidental discovery of an excellent restaurant!
Submitted Monday, September 8, 2008 - 10:51pm [Dine in]

Was in the neighbourhood on the weekend, looking for another restaurant, and found this winner.

There was a huge selection of classic and fusion Japanese food (sushi and otherwise). My friend is a vegetarian and appreciated some of the interesting sushi roll choices including those made with tropical fruits, and one beautifully decorated with red and yellow pepper.

I tried the couple of the hot tapas. The spicy scallop on a skewer wrapped in eggplant, lightly breaded and deep fried, came with a spicy mayonnaise (Ok, no calorie counting here!). The serving was two very large scallops, each wrapped in a paper-thin eggplant slice. It melted in my mouth and was delicious!

The sushi pizza sounded so interesting I had to try it. It was pretty good, although I recommend it more for sharing.

We ordered gen-mai cha to go with our meal. It was served in lovely cups and remained at our table in an attractive a clear glass teapot.

The place has great ambiance, classy decor, nice lighting, singer at the piano, even the bathroom sinks were cool!

Prices were reasonable, especially for the quality of food and service.

Only negative comment is the volume of the singer was a bit loud for me, sometimes making it hard to converse. Other than that it was great!

Tasty food - a nice surprise
Submitted Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 2:23am [Dine in]

Went there on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy. The ambiance isn't the greatest (a former doughnut shop afterall) however the food was quite delicious. My friend and I ordered matsaman curry with tofu and the pad spinach. Both very tasty. We had coconut rice to go with it, which I'd never had and it was yummy. I'll be back!
