Great take-out place
Submitted Friday, December 4, 2009 - 10:40pm [Dine in]

Here is your typical Chinese take-out joint that carries the usual fare you would find at a Chinese restaurant. The ambience is lacking, there are only a couple tables for waiting around for your order, but that's fine for this type of operation. In contrast to the poor look of the place, the dishes are surprisingly delicious with a touch of guilt, just how you expect Chinese take-out to be. Very reasonable prices for the value and quality! They also have an open kitchen that is in clear view of the customers - you can see fresh veggies on the countertops and your order being tossed around the wok, right in front of your eyes. Now that is quality assurance.

Great food! Feels authentic and homey

I found out about this place through word of mouth from friends living in Coquitlam and Richmond telling me they drive out of their way to eat here. I've been here a handful of times and have enjoyed their food every time. The restaurant is run-down, it is a small house-turned-restaurant that sits across from the Value Village parking lot (the area is improving quickly though, with new highrises and commercial lots). It is a mom & pops operation; you won't find fancy decor here but the owners are smiley and try their best. However, it is the food that keeps me going back and craving it while I'm at work. The stuffed chicken wings are yummy and the deep fried fish is to die for (I don't know what it's called, it was by recommendation from the owner) - they are small triangular-shaped fish and the sauce is amazing. The curries are great too. Although I've never been to Thailand, it tastes and feels authentic, not like some of the other mainstream Thai restaurants in the lower mainland.

Not great at all

Chose this restaurant despite the mixed reviews on here because we wanted to be fair and thought this place might still be decent. First off the place has a strong odor of Mr. Clean combined with that dirty bar floor smell. The food was very mediocre, okay but nothing to rave about. Certainly not worth the price. The service was also distateful. The server was unfriendly, she mixed up our order and when we told her about it she argued back, saying what SHE wrote down was correct. Um... no, maybe YOU wrote it down wrong? To my surprise however the place was filled up by 7pm. Why?? If this place used to be good before it clearly isn't anymore. The only good things about our meal were 1) the company I was with and 2) complimentary nachos we got while waiting for our meal.

Awesome wings

I'm kind of surprised at all the complaints for this place. I've been here numerous times - this place is laid back with a casual atmosphere. The hot wings and salt & pepper flavours are oh-so-delicious. The only complaint I would make is the music - the staff seem to have music wars. One night, we noticed 2 staff going back and forth to the stereo closet, one turning up the volume, the other turning it down, changing songs to this and that constantly, which was humorous but annoying at the same time. The music, however, will not stop me from eating their wonderful wings!

How is this restaurant still in business?
Submitted Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 10:30pm [Dine in]

Hakata is THE WORST Japanese restaurant I've ever been to! I was so appalled by the quality/service that i felt the urge to share my story here. The whole experience was awful. Service was below average, they made me wait about 5 mins just to place my order (even though the place was almost empty), and once I did place my order, it took another 15 mins for my simple order of 1 roll and 2 nigiri to go. I don't know what the hold up was. I could have sat and ate there for the same amount of time i waited for my take-out. When I finally got the food and opened the box I could tell the CHEF HAS NO IDEA what he's doing. Everything was terrible - the fish/roe they used was smelly and fishy-tasting, they screwed up my order, and the roll looked like it had been put together by a 5-yr old. The ball of wasabi had pieces of ginger stuck inside it. Talk about a presentation disaster.

I cannot believe this restaurant is still in business. I will NEVER go back.
