Cactus Club Cafe4653 Kingsway, Burnaby
solid lunch
Submitted Friday, February 6, 2009 - 12:35am [Dine in]

Came here for lunch today with my buddy, he had the cajun chicken sandwich, and I wasn't that hungry so I just had the mini burgers and a heinekin. The food was pretty good and the server was very nice as was the hostess. I'm not usually a fan of these chains but the last couple of times I've been to one (I was at the new one on burrard a couple of weeks ago) it's been pretty good. I guess i'm turning into a fan!

I came here last Thursday nite with my friend after a show. It was about 8pm, and it was fairly busy. The hostess was quite nice and we were seated in about 5 minutes. We both were pretty hungry and had a beer and a burger. The food was quite good. The beer (heineken) was on special that nite, I think 5 bucks. Our server was quite nice even though she did not do a quality check, we only saw here when she took our order, brought our food and gave us the bill, but it's Cactus right? what do you expect. The place itself was really nice, don't know what they spent on it but I'm sure a lot, tv's in the bathrooms, couches upstairs, yeah pretty nice. Overall a pretty good experience.

not bad pizza....with a coupon
Submitted Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 10:42pm [Take-out]

Just ordered a medium pizza for pick-up, pepperoni and mushroom, it was okay, the service was friendly, the place is just for take-out. I had a coupon, for $11.99 you can't go wrong. For full price which was I think $17.99 maybe not. One thing I didn't like though was that they don't have any prices on their websit.

I used to come here all the time. I used to live around main st. and after work I would drop by for a pizza or some pasta or salad. I would come here at least 2-3 times a week. The food is all pretty good. The one thing that bothered my about this place which is why I don't come here anymore is the owner, (the guy) Like I said, I used to come at least 2-3 times a week, and every time I come in it's like he doesn't even know you, barely a hello. I've taken my business elsewhere.

Was here when it first opened. Called to ask if we needed resos, the hostess said yes, when we got there the place was half empty. My friend and I ordered martinis, which I think were like 9 bucks each, fine whatever. We ordered our food and never saw our waiter again. Our drinks were empty and for 9 bucks a pop wouldn't you want to sell some more? I guess not, not that they were busy or anything. Well the food, the curry? I pretty much couldn't have gotten the same quality at the food court. Overall experience sucked and left a bad taste in my mouth.

I've been coming here for years. They have the best portugese egg tarts. All the other pastries, like the cake slices are very good as well. It's a small place and when you come in you take a number, it can get quite busy at times. It is a bit expensive but you can tell they use quality ingredients.

Came here with my friend on a weeknite. The hostess was not particularly friendly. The room is very nice, there were people watching the hockey game in the bar (though I was surprised there would be a tv in this type of restaurant) For starters we shared the antipasto plate, it was quite good, for mains, my friend had the sable fish, she really liked it. I had the veal scallapini piccata. it was pretty average. Our server was ok, but not too knowledgeable about food. Overall I don't think I would come back but you never know.

Came here last week after the pub with some friends, I think there were 6 of us. It was about 12:30am or 1am. I ordered the individual pepperoni pizza, it was pretty good, I was quite surprised actually. I don't normally go to "fast food" type places. The server was pleasant and overall it was pretty solid.

good thai food
Submitted Sunday, December 28, 2008 - 5:25pm [Dine in]

This is one of the older and better thai restaurants in the city. I've been coming here years ago. The curries are very good, as are the noodle and rice dishes. Service is friendly and attentive. Very good and traditional thai cuisine. The ambiance is nice, nothing fancy or over the top. It is also very good value for your money.

beef noodles in oily soup!
Submitted Sunday, November 23, 2008 - 6:15pm [Dine in]

I love tawainese spicy beef soup so when i heard about this place I wanted to try it out and it's also on the way home from work . Well what a mistake that was, I ordered the, beef brisket noodle in spicy soup for $6.95,$7.30 including tax. What I got was some noodles, 3 pieces of brisket in a spicy bland and oily soup, lucky I have soy sauce at home and man was it oily, terrible. The place itself is quite clean and the server was quite nice.....but sorry I don't like oil based soups!!

Came here for dinner today with my cousin. We started with the grilled calamari, it was pretty good. My cousin had the moussaka I think, I had the arni psito. The portions were really good, my lamb was a bit dry but overall pretty good. The service was very friendly, one of the servers forgot my beer and apologized afterwards and took the beer off the bill, a very nice gesture I thought. A nice dining experience.

Came here for lunch with my buddy today. I had the large no. 10 for $7. It was pretty good, it came really fast, the soup couldv'e been hotter and some of the beef was a bit tough, but overall pretty good. My buddy I think had the no. 1 and said it was pretty good, he works in surrey so he'd been there before.

bad fish!
Submitted Saturday, October 25, 2008 - 6:36pm [Dine in]

Came here with some friends who had been here before and liked it. We ordered lamb vindaloo which was good, curry chicken which was also good. The problem was the fish dish, can't even remember what it was but it was bad, like rancid bad, I had a piece of it and spit it out, it was just nasty like that ammonium smell when seafood is not fresh and off. When we told our server/owner he told us the fish was just marinated in vinegar and that it was supposed to be like that.????? Are you kidding me? who the hell doesn't know what bad fish taste like. Well he gave us some free desert (big deal) like some pudding or something that was like pretty cheap on the menu. Why lie to your customers??? Won't be back.

Used to work around the corner from here and would grab a burger on the way home. I usually always order the tex mex one, I think it's called. I loved them, the onion rings are good as well. For I think like 6.99 a burger, it's pretty decent. The place is pretty small so I'm sure it gets crowded. I usually go there after work around 9 or 10 and it's fine. Good burger joint!

Came here for a friends birthday. Always wanted to try it and heard good things about it. For appys, we ordered the soup, micro greens and carpaccio. everything was great except the greens, not that there was anything wrong with it but just didn't "wow" you. For mains, my friend ordered the chicken, my other friend ordered the filet and I ordered the trout, everything was delicious. For desert, the lemon tart was amazing! The best! Service was very attentive and though you can't tell from the outside the room is really attractive. The only maybe negative thing I can say is the menu is quite limited. Chef Jaeger is not on Team Canada for nothing. Well done!

Heard good things about this place so decided to check it out. Well I ordered the puttanesca, and it was horrible, the "sauce" tasted like it was out of a can, the worst puttanesca I've had in my life. The service was decent, the room was a bit rundown but the food was just horrible. Won't be going back that's for sure.

beautiful view.........but that's it!
Submitted Thursday, October 16, 2008 - 12:04am [Dine in]

Was here for my mom's birthday with the family. Well for a (seafood) fish house I can say they don't do a good job cooking fish, overcooked, bland, just poor execution. The service was indifferent but the price your paying for your meal is unjustified. The view though is beautiful, just stunning, but still doesn't make up for the food.

I first came here when my friends took me here and it was still called Mr Greek. I've been here a few times after that, I usually order the roast lamb and maybe some humus to start. The food is pretty decent, nothing special and the service is pretty neutral. The ambiance is typical of a lot of greek restaurants.

Submitted Sunday, October 12, 2008 - 3:14am [Dine in]

I live in burnaby and am not crazy about the Thai house, I find it too westernized for me, not authentic, so I decided to try Green Basil. I decided to order take-out, I ordered their seasonal veg, and a green curry chicken. It was pretty average at best, nothing special at all, pretty generic I thought. Don't think I'll be back.

I love this place, the food is always nicely done (quality ingredients and cooked with care), the servers are always friendly and attentive and it's a very chill room. I used to work in the area so I always come here for food and drinks. The kobe meatballs are awesome and the olive humus is the best! Can get really busy on weekends so might have to wait but it's worth it! Love it!
