Thirsty Duck, The606 12th Street, New Westminster
cheaptest steak. a nice place.

The first time I went there was with a group of 20 people for a workplace social, and it was great. At that time (I don't know about now), it was $5.99 (or so) for a dinner plate of steak and prawns, stuffed potato, and mushrooms, from 4pm to 6pm. The Duck is like a little Pub with an exclusive smoke room, and a billiard table.

The food wasn't spectacular, but hey, it was prrrretty good for $5.99. The food looked nice too. People there are quite casual and friendly as well, good service. Nice little place to go.

just because they have a good (expensive) location.

Bad service, improving food (but far from other places nearby), high price for the low quality. It's just the good location that's keeping it in business.

Normally there is no one at the host counter to greet/direct you. Once when I was eating there I went to look for a waiter (yes I had to get up and look for one) and when I got close to the entrance, a group of people thought I was the hostess, so I had to look for a waiter AND a host for the group of customers. That was ridiculous.

Cheap, fast, and good.

Good Pho. Very fast and very economical.

But don't order anything other than the beef noodles (aka the first part of the menu), I think everything else they have suck.

Service is not so great, they don't speak much English (for now, at least) and they never notice/come when you want them to, but service is not why you go to Pho Hong. You go for fast cheap good food.

I like how they give you a plate of sprouts and mint, and best of all lemon. And I like their rose bushes outside too.

The first time I went there, I thought the place was awesome. We didn't get all-you-can-eat, so maybe that's why the quality was good and we found the price to be more economical than some other places around that area.

The few times after that, I don't know what happened. The food just didn't taste as good. But this restaurant is still far better than the two Japanese diners in Metrotown (shogun and suishaya), in terms of money's worth.

They give you 10% off for take-outs, I think that's nice. We had a very satisfying dinner (of chicken teriyaki, asst tempura, sushi combo, etc) for 2 at around $20.

Mmmmm black sesame gelato!
(and pistaccio...and pink grapefruit...)

I think Mondo Gelato is the best gelato place in Vancouver. Very good price for so much variety (I work in Starbucks and even with my partner discount I only get one drink at the price of 3 or 4 gelato scoops). The people are friendly and always nice and patient about sampling and answering questions. Place is kept pretty clean (they bus often). I love their logo too.

Another thing to add is that they offer gelatos that are soy-based (no diary, no sugar, no fat) and some sorbetto (no diary and fresh fruit). mmm

nice all-you-can-eat deal

They combine Japanese sashimi/sushi and Korean BBQ in their all-you-can-eat, giving customers twice the variety of other single-style restaurants. This is at a decent price too, and the food quality is quite good. For evening all-you-can-eat, the food comes so fast! The place can get pretty busy and really loud, and the shape of their unit is strange, but ambiance is not bad.

The way the waiters/waitresses welcome customers is like no other place I've ever been to. Just incredible enthusiasm and positive energy in the entire place, makes you feel so good coming in and going out (the whole restaurant knows your entry and exit).

Their daily specials (written in funky japanese handwriting) are really, really good. Salmon (i think it's wild) and mussel mmm. This place is definitely quality over quantity. They must put effort in the presentation of the dishes too, very pretty.

They're generous and considerate with the extra share-plates, as well as water and hot hand towels.

Overall, other than the good quality of the food, what sets it apart from other places is the refreshing, welcomed feeling you get out of the place.
