So, I’ve been seeing this guy for a couple of weeks and he turns to me and he says, “Hey, I know you like Japanese food and all and some of my friends went to this place called the Kobe downtown. Do you wanna check it out?” And I was all, “Sure, why not?” It took a couple of minutes to find out where it was (who knew there was a street between Georgia and Robson?), but once we got there it seemed sort of low-key and gangster-ish all at once, like some kind of spy movie. All mood lighting with dark colors, pretty waitresses and big booths. We check in with the hostess and are taken to our seats and I’m looking around, trying to see what other people are ordering, but people are only drinking down here and I’m wondering if we can get some sashimi or when we’ll see a menu and then our hostess comes back and asks us to follow her.
And I’m thinking to myself, what the hell is this? We go up this narrow flight of stairs and past this big Buddha statue and I’m getting ready to rub the belly when I turn a corner and WHAMMO~! Giant flame! Turns out that boothy area downstairs is actually just their waiting room. The real food is served upstairs. We get this huge menu (the thing is half my size!) and we’re looking over it. He gets steak and prawns and I’m looking around, trying to tell what’s what, but the other tables are all mad chaos and open flames and I’m all wondering what to order. My hostess comes back and recommends the chicken, so I grab that.
A few minutes go by and we get some soup and I’m wondering what all the fuss is about at the other tables when our chef finally arrives. The actual chef! Dude’s sporting the entire table’s food, raw, and I’m suddenly thinking that he’s going to cook the food right in front of us and I’m right! There’s lot of juggling knives and flying food, sesame seeds falling in spiraling slow motion, it was awesome! My chicken, sadly, came last but by the time it arrived I was so incredibly hungry, staring at everyone else’s food, but it was so totally worth it! I didn’t know chicken could taste that good! I swapped some chicken with my mister for his steak and the steak was good but, man, that chicken has to be tried to be believed!
Place is so totally awesome!
