Boathouse Restaurant, The14935 Marine Drive, White Rock
Disappointing first and last visit to the White Rock Boathouse.
Submitted Monday, December 15, 2014 - 3:51pm [Dine in]

My son and daughter-in-law arrived from out of town and I wanted to take them somewhere special for my son's birthday. My friend also joined us. I made reservations at The Boathouse, White Rock, and we arrived just prior to the reservation time. The hostess was very nice and seated us quickly by a window. Unfortunately the window seal must be broken as there was a strong draft coming through. I was freezing throughout the dinner. Our waitress eventually arrived and took our drink order. 1 glass of wine, 1 diet pepsi and 2 cocktails. She came back several minutes later with the wine, soft drink and 1 cocktail. The other cocktail seemed to be lost in space. Eventually it arrived. As one member of the party is gluten intolerant we had a number of questions for the waitress. Initially the hostess said that the Boathouse had a gluten free menu and the waitress would list off the items for us. When we asked, the waitress denied having anything gluten free. She obviously had no knowledge of what gluten free means. It is not a lifestyle preference but a medical issue that must be addressed. We found the waitress to be very rude, she had no knowledge of the proper way to serve or remove dishes from the table. We ordered one appetizer and a salad which were good. When it came time to order the main course we all ended up having steak. My daughter-in-law and my friend both said their meals were good. My son asked for medium rare in his steak and he got rare. I asked for medium rare and I did get medium rare but the piece of meat was not the best cut. I found it really hard to cut and/or chew. And I got some gristle with it. Obviously it had not been trimmed very well. When our steak knives were delivered we had to send 3 out of 4 back as they were dirty. The water glasses had spots on them and the waitress neglected to come back to check on the drinks and water until nearly the end of the meal. I had advised the restaurant when I made the reservation that it was my son's birthday. At the end of the meal the waitress delivered a dessert to my son with a sparkler on it. The sparkler was the best part. He took one bite and said he would not eat the dessert as it was coffee flavored and had nuts on it. With all of the allergies out there, why wouldn't the restaurant either check with me when I made the reservation or check when she was going to get a dessert for him to see if he had any allergies. What was supposed to be a very special evening (as I only see my kids once or twice a year if I am lucky) turned out to be a terrible night. I will never return to The Boathouse in White Rock and I will advise everyone I know of how awful the service was. I did leave a tip (the bill was $192.00) but only because I did not want to penalize those working in the back of the house as the cooking was reasonable. The restaurant was not busy at all last night (Sunday night) so I fail to understand why the waitresses were so slow. They had time to chat in the back hallway when they thought no one was looking. Overall impressions: too pricey, no value, rude and uneducated staff, and the waitress was not willing to get any information for us.
