At least we have half-price Mondays
Submitted Wednesday, August 5, 2009 - 2:31am [Dine in]

Had a chance to try the menu out with a few very hungry friends on 'half price Mondays' this week - the steaks were amazing and cooked perfectly to order. However, the sides were very pedestrian and disappointing -- soggy boring cheese toast, flaccid ceasar salad, undercooked fries- like other restaurants in this chain (Brown's etc), the food just doesn't really cut it overall - However, if you're hunkering for some MEAT, enjoy a steak house ambience, and can keep your gustatory expectations in check, Mondays will definitely deliver a half-way decent budget meal.

The best that kitsalano has to offer and that's saying something!

We have had a chance to sample I Sushi's delectable menu offerings numerous times and strongly recommend this restaurant. From traditional and non-traditional Japanese soups, salads, appetizers, barbeque and grill to tempura, sashimi, nigiri and temaki, this place has it all. But wait - the best is yet to come - this wonderful little hideaway on Arbutus just off Broadway has a selection of the most intriguing and scrumptious 'Chef's Special Rolls' that tempt us to spend our money every time. How about a Latin Lover, Caribbean Storm, Brazil Samba or Sea Adventure? The Snow White is a personal favorite - Salmon tempura roll topped with sesame seeds, chopped scallops, tobiko, coconut shavings and house spicy sauce. Go ahead, give this little Kitsalano gem a try and enjoy!

What a grand little spot in the heart of Mount Pleasant! We unfortunately had no reservation (the wait for a table was 2 hours!!!!!!), but scored a couple of seats at the bar which turned out to be a great way to savour a sampling of tres, tres tasty wine at very reasonable prices, well concieved, delicious appetizers (the mussels, pate, and onion tart) and some good conversation with other bar stool mates. Service was friendly, prompt and knowledgeable. Congratulations to the owners for taking a gamble on the area - We will definitely be back with a reservation in tow!

Yikes - something has really changed here, if past, posative reviews are any indication. Looking at the menu posted in the window, we were very excited to give this place a try - The warm ambience and comfortable seating was truly inviting after a long day of trekking around the cranberry festival. Upon our arrival, (we were the first folks in for dinner) I was interesting to hear from our waitress that the "chef was so overwhelmed" by the action during the day, that he hadn't had time to make more chowder. In retrospect, this comment was a true harbinger to come. Given all the other intriguing appetizer/tapas to explore, we proceeded to order 3 appies, and asked that the goat cheese/cranberry option be served first. Instead, the mussels in tomato/chorizo sauce arrived and what a mucky overcooked, rubbery mess they were - Yuck. Next up was the goat cheese/cranberry chutney option, which in some ways was quite good, but why, why why would you serve this with a sweet cranberry bread - it really needed to rest on a more savory base.
Lastly, we shared the star option of the evening - Lamb chops with potato and jus - beautiful!

Service was mediocre - I think our waitress was trying, but it appeared she was very inexperienced, so was not very attentive - we were left having to ask for water, to have our table candle lit etc. Fortunately, the wine selection was good and came very promptly!

Would we try this place again? Absolutely, as there is a lot of potential here and the space is elegant and sophisticated - the food and service just have to catch up the room!

How could we have missed this?

Was out trolling in Gastown the other night with friends and had the opportunity to try out Revel. What a score - the menu is chock full of delectable tapas, definitely something for every taste! The highlights for us were the shrimp cakes (a special), the asparagus (roasted perfectly), and the carpaccio (beautiful on the plate and in the mouth!) We will definitely be going back to work our way down this amazing menu - Brave to the chefs, the waitstaff and the decorator - a real find.
