Ocean Park & Village Pub12822 16th Avenue, Surrey
Not a great experience
Submitted Sunday, October 5, 2014 - 12:17pm [Dine in]

Recently went to the Ocean Park & Village Pub for lunch and were very disappointed. I ordered the quesadilla and I have to say it was the worst one I have ever had. It was supposed to be a chicken quesadilla but had almost no chicken in it. Instead, it was full of congealed, greasy cheese and virtually no vegetables. Very bad! My husband had a pizza and said it was okay - certainly not great. I have had their spanakopita before and it was mediocre as well. Very disappointing - the food here has really gone down hill. Also, the tables are crammed so closely together, it is difficult to enjoy a conversation or, at times, find room to get up to go to the washroom.

Tudor Ale House187 176th Street, Surrey
Nice option!
Submitted Sunday, October 5, 2014 - 12:05pm [Dine in]

We have been wanting to try out the Tudor Ale house for a while so took the opportunity to visit for lunch recently. The interior is nicely done and it wasn't as loud as many pub/restaurants are. There were three of us - we ordered Italian Flat Bread, Meatloaf and the Crispy Chicken Caesar Wrap. The person who ordered the flat bread said it was really good - it's the second time he has ordered it and he really enjoyed it. The meatloaf was a disappointment - the texture was strange and it was quite bland. The Crispy Chicken Caesar Wrap was good but not great - a little too much lettuce for my liking. The service was very good and friendly. We will definitely go back and try some different menu items as there are certainly lots of choices.

Sheila's Bistro and Lounge2181 160 St, Surrey, BC, Surrey
Mixed experience
Submitted Sunday, October 5, 2014 - 11:53am [Dine in]

Sheila's Bistro and Lounge is a fairly new addition to the South Surrey restaurant scene. Because it is very close to where we live we happened by it and decided to try it. Parking is a bit of a problem because it is located in a business complex but the inside is bright, clean and cheerful. Unfortunately, because of the lack of any soft surface treatments, it is extremely loud if it is a busy day. Also the menu is extremely limited. We were very surprised there they do not have any soup choices for lunch and some of the other items were not very appealing. There were three of us and we actually had trouble finding something we wanted to eat. Some of the menu items are a bit pretentious. Two of us had the fish tacos which were pretty good but certainly not great. The other person had the special of the day which was prawns and chips. She said the prawns were pretty good. The best part of the meal was their home made potato chips - not fries but thin, crispy potato chips. They were delicious and are quite addictive. The place has a lot of promise but all three of us felt they will really have to work on their menu. There are simply not enough choices for us to return very often.

Service was excellent though!

Great lunch!
Submitted Sunday, October 5, 2014 - 11:31am [Dine in]

We have been to The Derby on a few occasions and have always enjoyed it. I went yesterday with two other women and we had a great lunch. Both of my dining companions had the soup and sandwich special which is a great deal at $6.50. One had the potato soup with a BLT and said the BLT was the best she has ever had and she really enjoyed the soup as well. The other had the chicken rice soup which she said was really good and a grilled cheese sandwich which she also enjoyed. I had the Saratoga pizza and it was delicious! We also shared an order of onion rings which were also very good.

This is nice, casual little place with good, fresh food and very solid service. It is lively enough to have a good ambiance but quiet enough for conversation. We love the fact that all of their burgers provide for a choice of beef burger, chicken, salmon or a veggie burger. It's very difficult to get a decent fish burger of any kind and theirs are really good.

We will definitely be going back and are planning to try dinner there soon!

Hemingway Waterfront Public House, The14995 Marine Dr., White Rock
Great experience!
Submitted Thursday, June 26, 2014 - 3:19pm [Dine in]

We went to Hemingway Public House today for lunch. It is the first time we have been there since it changed over from the previous name. The three of us sat on the patio. Within seconds we were asked for our drink order. When the drinks came (2 iced teas and one beer) the server also brought us a large bottle of water and three water glasses. We are all water drinkers and have found too often that we have trouble getting a water refill so we really appreciated this touch. Two of us ordered the fish tacos from the appetizer menu and one ordered the chicken strips, also from the appetizer menu. We also ordered some deep fried dill pickles and yam fries to share. The fish tacos were very good - fresh fish and crispy coleslaw with a nice tangy sauce. The chicken strips were also good. We had never tried deep fried dill pickles before and they were delicious as were the yam fries. Our server was friendly and attentive and seemed to truly care that her customers enjoyed their experience. The three of us agreed that we would definitely go back soon!

Jimmy Flynn's Celtic Snug15065 Marine Dr, White Rock
Worst lunch ever!
Submitted Wednesday, June 18, 2014 - 1:31pm [Dine in]

Today my husband, my sister and I went to Jimmy Flynn's Celtic Snug in White Rock because our favourite "go to" place - Slainte by the Pier - is now closed. We had been looking forward to going for lunch and sitting outside on the patio. I checked on the website, saw that they open at 11 a.m. so we arrange to meet there at 11:15 a.m. When we arrived, they were closed. They didn't open until shortly after 11:20 a.m. We immediately noticed that we would not be able to sit on the patio because there was no table that would accommodate three people so we went inside. Once inside, we noticed that there were no tables except bar tables by the windows. Both my sister and I are short and cannot sit on bar stools so we had no choice but to sit at a dark table. The server was unfamiliar with types of beer and didn't seem to know what beers were available. My husband ordered a Smithwicks. He said it tasted like a cross between root beer and some beer that he couldn't identify. He has ordered this beer numerous times in other places and knew that what he got at Flynn's had something wrong with it. The three of us ordered - baked penne, one piece cod fish and chips and one piece halibut fish and chips. My sister and I agree that the fish and chips were the worst we have ever had. Both of us believe we could get a better piece of fish out of a Captain Highliner box. The pieces of fish were small for the price and both the cod and the halibut were touch, stringy and inedible. The fries were soft and smelled of stale oil. The halibut was so stale that I had to spit it out. I don't know how long that fish had been frozen but I am certain it was a long time. My sister barely touched her food. When the server came to take her virtually untouched plate away, she simply grabbed it and left without even commenting that it had barely been touched. My husband said the baked penne was "not that bad". We will NEVER go back to this place. Simply put, it is awful. We ended up wishing we had gone to the new asian place - Beijing.

Such a shame!
Submitted Thursday, May 22, 2014 - 10:26am [Dine in]

This place used to be great but has continually deteriorated over the last ten years. We live fairly close and used to go once a week. The design of the room is great and the patio is lovely but the furnishings are awful - uncomfortable chairs that are falling apart and dirty and the arm chairs in the corners are absolutely filthy. The carpet could also be cleaned or replaced. In addition, they seem to have trouble keeping all the washrooms in working order. The food is uninspiring to say the least. The Chicken Quesadilla used to be one of my favourites but I think they have started using bags of frozen diced chicken because it smells and tastes old. The last two times I went there I ordered the Quesadilla without chicken because it was so bad. My husband has had the salmon and it smelled and tasted very fishy. Virtually everything we have tried from the menu has been poorly executed and bland.

The service is unreliable as well. Some of the servers don't seem to care at all about providing decent service. There is one woman that is awesome but the rest just don't care.

We also used to take out of town guests there because it was a nice casual place with decent food. We would no longer take anyone there because it has been so poorly maintained and is so dirty. In fact, we don't go there any more for the same reason.

Leela Thai Restaurant1310 Johnston Road, White Rock
Very disappointing
Submitted Wednesday, April 30, 2014 - 9:55am [Dine in]

Leela Thai has been one of our "go to" places for years but, for some reason, we hadn't been for a while. So when we were trying to decide on where to go for our anniversary we decided on Leela Thai because we had always found the food to be fresh and delicious and the service excellent. Well, to say we were disappointed is an understatement. The place is in need of a good cleaning and the food quality has declined significantly. We ordered chicken satay for an appetizer - it was very bland and not at all the savory taste we were looking forward to. We also ordered a green curry and a chicken dish. Both were bland and disappointing and the portions are considerably smaller than they used to be. We ordered a 1/2 liter of wine when we came in and it totally baffled the servers. They didn't know what it was, couldn't find it and couldn't open it. Also, in the middle of our dinner, a woman a couple of tables away actually changed her baby's diaper right at the table in the dining room and nobody said anything to her. It was such a disappointing experience for our anniversary that we were in and out of there in an hour.

Unfortunately we will not be going back.

La Baia Italian Restaurant15791 Marine Drive, White Rock
Simply great food!
Submitted Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - 11:51am [Dine in]

We have been going to La Baia for many, many years and have always been extremely pleased with both the food and the service. There are very few places anymore that provide such outstanding service without being intrusive and annoying. The servers here are more professional than anywhere else in the area. The food is always fresh, well prepared and excellent. The portions are very reasonable without being foolish. The pasta dishes are always delicious and the veal dishes are fantastic as well. Whenever we want to go somewhere a bit special, we always pick La Baia. The only constructive criticism I can provide is that the décor of the restaurant is extremely dated and in need of a make-over. Having said that, the restaurant is clean and well maintained. La Baia is a great place to go when you want to be assured of a great experience.

Hidden gem!
Submitted Thursday, September 12, 2013 - 9:43am [Dine in]

I have gone to Damiko on a number of occasions and have always had a good experience. Their food is fresh, well presented and very tasty. I can't speak for the sushi because I don't eat sushi but many of the other items on the menu are delicious including sunomono, prawn tempura, gyoza and the udon soup. The service is quick and the servers friendly. The ambiance could be taken up a notch but overall it is a great place to stop for a relaxing, casual bite if you like fresh and tasty food!

On the downhill slide
Submitted Thursday, September 12, 2013 - 9:36am [Dine in]

We started going to "Joes" soon after it opened because it is not too far from where we live. When we first started going the food was fresh and the service excellent. Recently though we have found that both the quality of the food and the service has declined significantly. The salads are terrible - some of the greens are so old they are brown and slimy. I recently tried the fish tacos which I frequently order in restaurants if it is available. The fish was old, dry and there was so little of it I actually opened up the tacos to see if they actually contained any fish only to find a couple of very small, mashed traces of fish. The quesadilla is just plain bad. I have also ordered the Kona Burger - the first time I had it, it was delicious but the second time it was so fatty and full of gristle that I couldn't eat it. The only decent thing left on the menu is the chili lime chicken. Very unfortunate because it used to be a nice place. We used to go at least every other week but we won't be going back. If you are in the area, go next door to Kami for better food and service!

Excellent Choice!
Submitted Thursday, September 12, 2013 - 9:26am [Dine in]

We have been going to Slainte for a number of years now and we have never been disappointed. Three of us went again this week and had an extremely enjoyable experience. Two of us ordered the fish and chips and one ordered the fish cakes. The fish had a very thin but crispy coating and was super fresh, accompanied by fresh cut fries. My sister had the fish cakes and said they were delicious. On other occasions we have also tried the Shepherds Pie, Beef and Guinness Stew and Chicken Pot Pie. All were excellent! If you like a frozen slab of dried up fish coated in a thick layer of grease soaked and overly salted batter, you will not like Slainte By the Pier! Come for the fresh food and the friendly service!

Pelagos Greek Restaurant2728 O'Hara Lane, Surrey
Great food, great location
Submitted Sunday, August 11, 2013 - 8:32am [Dine in]

We have been going to Pelagos for years and always enjoy the food. Everything is tasty and the portions are great. Their spinach pie is one of the best I have had and their souvlaki is always good. Hummus and tzatziki are some of the best I have ever had as well. The service is inconsistent though - sometimes it takes forever to get the server's attention and getting the bill and paying it is almost always a bit of a wait. Can't understand why they only serve lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday though. During the summer I am sure they would be busy if they were open for lunch more often. In terms of location - it doesn't get much better! Awesome to have some great food right on the beach!

Fresh and tasty
Submitted Sunday, August 11, 2013 - 8:24am [Dine in]

Went to The Rustic Gourmet recently with two friends. I ordered the Mexican chicken wrap, one friend ordered the fresh turkey sandwich on cranberry pumpkin seed bread and another friend ordered the ham and cheese quiche. Everything was very fresh and very good. The house salad that accompanies the dishes is excellent with pieces of fresh orange and toasted, sliced almonds. The ambiance isn't great as it is located in a curling rink but it is worth a try if you like really fresh food. Their baked goods are excellent as well.

Way overdue for a makeover
Submitted Thursday, June 20, 2013 - 12:18pm [Dine in]

Have been to the Dodger quite a few times as we live in the vicinity. The service is great - prompt and friendly. The servings are huge and the food is good - pretty standard pub fare. The only complaint I have is that the décor is pretty sad. Although I am aware they are trying to create a warm and homey atmosphere, that does not need to include filthy carpets with the pile worn off and dirty upholstery with holes. I really think the owners need to do a bit of a makeover in order to ensure patrons keep returning.

Nice setting and great service!
Submitted Tuesday, May 7, 2013 - 9:57am [Dine in]

We popped in to the Oystercatcher Seafood Bar and Grill for a light bite and a drink on a recent trip to Salt Spring. There were three of us. We weren't hungry enough for a full lunch so we ordered a plate of guacamole and tortilla chips together with a goat cheese and garlic appetizer. Two of us ordered wine and one person chose a glass of beer. The appetizers were very good - especially the goat cheese and garlic plate which was great. Our server was very friendly and looked after us well without being intrusive. The seating was comfortable - we sat by a window and enjoyed the view of the harbour, boats and foot traffic. We had a very enjoyable afternoon at the Oystercatcher and would recommend it to anyone who finds themselves in Ganges.

Auntie Pesto's big disappointment!
Submitted Tuesday, May 7, 2013 - 9:47am [Dine in]

Auntie Pesto's in Ganges on Salt Spring Island was highly recommended to us by the proprietor of our hotel/resort. Three of us went for dinner and were very surprised at the poor service and ambiance of the place. The seating they have chosen is very uncomfortable and the general feel of the place is stark and unwelcoming. One person ordered chili lime prawns that were okay but over seasoned. Two of us ordered beef stroganoff which was EXTREMELY disappointing - particularly for the inflated price! There was very little beef in the dish, the sauce was almost non-existent and too thick. It was like noodles with some canned cream of mushroom soup stirred in and very few extremely small pieces of beef for $23.00 each! Frankly we were outraged at what we got for the price and will never return to this establishment. We would definitely not recommend it.

Highly overrated
Submitted Thursday, March 14, 2013 - 12:30pm [Dine in]

We have visited the Roadhouse on a number of occasions because of the great reviews it has received. I am afraid I cannot concur with those reviews. Although they have a large selection of items we have found the dishes to be mediocre at best. We have tried a number of things - burritos, sandwiches, salads and they were all pretty bland and tasteless. The portions tend to be very large but the food is definitely nothing special. Also, one of the worst cups of coffee I have ever had and the noise in the place makes it very unpleasant. If you are looking for a place to fill up on huge portions of fairly bland food, the Roadhouse is for you.

Great little place in Crescent Beach
Submitted Thursday, March 14, 2013 - 12:21pm [Dine in]

The Harbour House in Crescent Beach used to be a Sushi place but has changed hands and changed focus. The menu now includes some great breakfast and lunch items as well as some asian specials. They have recently started opening for dinner. The service is friendly, prompt and courteous and the food is always fresh and tasty. They also have some smaller size dishes for smaller eaters which is great. We go there fairly frequently and always receive our coffee and water seconds after we sit down. The breakfast quesadilla and omelets are excellent as is the chicken pita sandwich. I haven't tried the asian specials yet but my friend has and was very pleased. Another friend loves their meatloaf sandwich. This is one of our "go to" places! We will have to try it for dinner now that they have extended their hours. If you like tasty, fresh food this place is a winner.

A hidden gem
Submitted Thursday, March 14, 2013 - 12:13pm [Dine in]

DelRios is a real hidden gem tucked away at the end of a strip mall in Ocean Park. The food is super fresh and tasty. They make their own pizza dough daily and they make their own salads - no bagged salads here! The El Greco pizza is fresh, tasty and the crust is excellent. We have been there numerous times and everything is always excellent. Their outdoor patio is nice in the summer - one of the few restaurant patios in Surrey that is not right beside a main road. The staff is friendly, capable and attentive but not overbearing. The decor is really outdated but they are currently in the middle of renovations so hopefully a big improvement is on the way. DelRios is a casual little place with great, fresh food. This is one of our favourite little places!
