Medicority Abounds
Submitted Friday, October 26, 2007 - 6:56pm [Dine in]

How is this place so busy when within just a few blocks there are so many better places. The food is average at best, and the service is cold, and indifferent. The burger tastes like one from Triple O's...but more expensive.
I find the decor lacking of emotion. Yes they clearly spent some money on this little place, but it doesn't feel like anyone cared about it. This is just a mini version of all the big box chains. They've taken all the bad elements, and seems little of the good, and put it into what should be a nice intimate space. Too loud, too sad, too bad.

Metro Review Brought Us In
Submitted Monday, June 18, 2007 - 2:32pm [Dine in]

On Friday when deciding where to go, we read the review for this restaurant in The Metro. I had never heard of it before, then searched for it on the internet and discovered this site, and man I see they have a lot of good reviews here.
So, we walked on over, even though it was full, they were able to squeeze us in. I had the 3 course menu for 20 bucks, and its an amazing deal. I had the fondue which was like the spinach artichoke dip, but better, I'm not a big fan of artichokes, so the replacement with squash was excellent.
Then I had the mushroom ravioli in garlic cream. Amazing. That was so delicious and rich. And I don't where in the review she says the portion is small, I was stuffed afterwards. I had to take my dessert, corn bread.
My wife didn't do the three course menu, she wanted the prawns which wasn't offered there, which she said was delicious.
We had the cornbread before going to bed. It is very different, not too sweet, and has this different flavour, that I can only guess is the corn, it was very good as well.
The service was fast and attentive, very very good. We will definitely return again and again. Also, they told us they're going to be doing a steak special next month. I'm in,

Second Visit Much Better!
Submitted Monday, June 18, 2007 - 12:19pm [Dine in]

On our second visit to Fuel, everything is much improved, which was already quite good to begin with. We had the multi course menu, and paired wines with it. Everything ws absolutely spectacular. Clearly this restaurant has found its groove already.
This is truly a fine dining experience, this is a place to go for special occasions. Unfortunately for me, it was my friends birthday, so I had a very steep bill to contend with, but it is definitely worth it. I often feel at fine dining restaurants that I did not get my money's worth, but here I certainly did.

We will return again!

A Perfectly OK Experience
Submitted Tuesday, May 15, 2007 - 11:54am [Dine in]

The food is very good, no question about that, but service is very indiferent and at times quite rude. Our server at times clearly ignored us intentionally when we tried to get attention for more drinks, and water, and clean cutlery.
As I am rarely in this area for meal time, I doubt I will be frequently this place again, but if I lived nearby I would probably get it for take-out. But I dont care to pay someone to ignore me.

Unbelievable Disappointment
Submitted Monday, May 7, 2007 - 2:14pm [Dine in]

I dont understand why this place is so highly praised. It is extremely expensive, the two of us spent well over $200. The service is very snobby, yet lacking the knowledge. Not only when we ask about the wines does the server lack any knowledge, they waiter twice brought the wrong bottle to the table.
The Filet Mignon we had was bland and flavourless. My wife's was slightly overcooked, while mine was ordered rare and came out medium.
Considering that this is a steakhouse, you would think they would hire people who can cook a steak properly.
Clearly the room is very expensive, but just not worth suffering mediocre service, and terrible food. Food that costs an arm and a leg at that.

Decent Little Place
Submitted Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 4:32pm [Dine in]

Its in a nice location, and is a nice little restaurant and ok food. It seems to be trying too hard. It's menu is all funky, making it hard to really choose something interesting. Most items I would normally like has some confusing twist that makes it unappealing.

I had the roasted tenderloin, which was good, not a bad price for a good tenderloin either. But it did not wow me.
Service seemed fairly indifferent. Perhaps I was not cool enough to get attention, as another table seemed to get attention from everyone working there. Someone important there I guess, but they sure did a great job of making me feel unimportant.
If the staff can get better at treating ALL their guests, I might ejoy this place better.
I would love to hang out here in the summer.

A Perfectly Average Place
Submitted Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 11:43am [Dine in]

I am amazed our experience was the so average, that it actually stood out. The service was OK. They came, took our orders, brought us our food, cleared plates, and dropped off the bill. No personality, no energy, but nothing negative either. They just were.
The food same, nothing wrong with it, it was all good, but nothing special. The wings are no better, nor any worse, than any other pub that serves wings.
Even the room, there;s nothing wrong with it, but doesnt catch your interest in anyway.
This place was so average that it actually stood out in my mind-maybe that's their goal, but sadly, as it was so average, I comment about it, and I've told several friends already too, which is good for them, perhaps, but I doubt I will be driven to return anytime soon, though I'm also not motivated to stay away either.
A strange accomplishment this is.

Pleasant Experience Overall
Submitted Monday, April 30, 2007 - 9:51am [Dine in]

I quite like the Marmalade. We've had lunch here several times, admittedly it's never been very busy when we've been here, but the service has been very good and friendly. I see some previous reviewers making comments about the owners, but I'm not sure how they even know who the owner is? Well, everyone here seems quite pleasant every time we've visited.
The food isn't anything special, average food, but there's nothing really wrong with that, when you consider the average in Vancouver is set quite high-I'd say our average would be considered amazing in a lot of other areas in BC and Canada.
The view is nice, not as amazing as some others state, it looks out onto the marina and sea wall-but it's still decent.
Their burger is very good, I've had it several times.
It's an average restaurant, with some friendly staff in a pleasant location, nothing to really complain about there.

Nice Room, Boring Everything Else
Submitted Sunday, April 29, 2007 - 10:49pm [Dine in]

Earl's has definitely found a very good designer, the room is very glam and exciting, urban and moderne, and all the other hot design terms.
Sadly the concept itself does not live up to the room. It is true to the earls concept, but the room is so much nicer than other earls locations, that the limitations of the food and service become that much more obvious.
The only reason we ever go here is its proximity to the movie theatre is very convenient. Hopefully earls can develop their food to a level to compare with this room...otherwise its a sad waste of such a nice space.

Very Good Pizza
Submitted Sunday, April 29, 2007 - 10:34pm [Dine in]

Maybe it's that we ordered pizzas all around, but the food we had was very good. Delicious, gourmet pizzas for sure. The service and ambiance is good. I don't think I want to see the place in the daylight...does feel a little gungy, but at night with the dim lights, works quite well.
Service was good, not excellent, but no complaints or problems. I will definitely eat here again, though looking at other reviews, I will probably stick to pizza.

Dont Try the Beef Dip
Submitted Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 1:54pm [Dine in]

I have had the beef dip here, and it is so tough, and dry, and flavourless. I had to drink several glasses of water and 2 beers to swallow this sandwich. I dont know how anyone could think this is a beef dip worth trying.
The service is standard for this type of restaurant, and the ambiance is the usual slick and no substance style.
I highly recommend calling it a miss on this restaurant.

Quite Disappointing
Submitted Monday, April 23, 2007 - 8:42pm [Dine in]

We had read all the reviews on here before visiting this restaurant, and since most were excellent, and only a couple of bad, we figured the bad were isolated events. Well if they are, we hit on one such event.
The service wan't to bad, average, nothing to complain about, and the ambiance is ok too.
The food however is quite disappointing. The calamari was very greasy, and soggy, and rubbery.
The cheese on our pasta tasted like plastic cheese, you know like Velveeta...terrible.
I like to give places the benefit of the doubt, and I gave them the benefit, and went in knowing of the criticism, and still was quite disappointed.

Nice Room, Very Good Food
Submitted Saturday, April 21, 2007 - 11:38am [Dine in]

I would say the food is quite nice, though also very expensive.
The buffalo mozzarella salad at $16, was very good, but just a salad. The Carpaccio was also excellent, and that was only $14, so ok price. Also the calamari was very good, at $14.
We only tried appetizers, as we werent really that hungry, and feedback from others was that they do appetizers better than mains.
They have an excellent wine selection. The service is a little too formal for me. I like a more relaxed style, where the server gives us feedback and input on our experience.
The two of us, after tax & tip, spent close to $200, and only had the 3 appetizers. So clrealy its easy to spend lots of money here. If the prices were a bit more reasonable, and service a little warmer, we would definitely be frequent diners.

Uninspired Cuisine at Best
Submitted Friday, April 20, 2007 - 5:02pm [Dine in]

I agree with the previous review, there is nothing exceptional about this place. The food is mediocre at best, boring and bland. The presentation is sloppy, and clearly prepared by someone who does not take pride in their work. There was 4 of us at the table and the steaks were ALL over cooked. I ordered rare and received med. The waiters response: "That's how we cook it here." What does that mean, I'm not sure, do they purposely over cook for some strange reason? Or is the server just trying to avoid work.
Which our server seemed to be doing all night. Our drinks sat empty for over 10 minutes. When my friend asked for some HP sauce for his dry over cooked steak, he never received any. I dont know if our server forgot, or they dont have it and he was to lazy to bother to tell us?
Yes, they clearly spent a ton of dosh on the design and decor, but who cares if they're producing crap served by unintelligent waiters? I wont be back. And you shouldn't go either.
