I have to say that this site is wonderful and many of the reviews are spot on.
The two post below have got it right. Wally's Burgers is a place to avoid. bad food and high prices. I feel the reason is the staff. My burger had all the makings of a good one, but the meat was over cooked and the bread was still frozen. If well managed this would not have happened.
It is very interesting to note that this place got a fantastic review from the North Shore News food critic resently - This critic really got it wrong and I have to say the reviews on this site are doing a much better job than she is. In fact, she has gotten it wrong on many occasions. I from now on will avoid her reviews and only go by Dinehere. I think we should get Chaisbow as the new critic for the North Shore News.
cheers
I ordered the two piece cod and chips. I was hoping to get something good, but should of known better. The 18 yr old drop out cooking the food and red neck owner did not inspire me.
The fish was terrible - so bad that a frozen store bought version would have been better. The oil was off and the fish was old. Every bite tasted like old oil. For almost $13 I am expecting something better
The chips fried in the same rancid oil was just as bad.
I just do not undertand why the owner would make such bad food. I guess he sells to the tourist in this location and knows he will never see them again.
This place was the only food place not busy for lunch - I should have taken the hint.
This cafe is seriously the WORST cafe in Vancouver. Did your fat-o-meter not click in??? The coffee is atrociously horrible - do you know how many times they re-steam milk there for a latte? Health regulations should close this place down! Huge staff turnover! I once timed an espresso there - SIX SECOND SHOT… the owner obviously hasn’t a clue about coffee. This place is not worth a visit. The service sucks and it mainly caters to yuppie folks that don’t care if their coffee is served from a toilet as long as it looks trendy from the outside. I am quite stunned that anyone would there. Awful awful awful. Save your money and hit up Terra Breads on 4th… or better yet bake the scones yourself with margarine and brew some President Choice coffee and it will still be better than the crap they serve here.
I grew up in the Bay area and have always visited the local chocolate shops there. When I came to North Vancouver and asked everyone I saw where I could get MY CHOCOLATE FIX they suggested this one. What a huge huge huge dissapointment. The chocolate was gritty and lacked flavour. I am really surprised that the people here do not know good chocolate. This stuff is average and nothing more. I think the problem is that they do not make there own chocolate - they buy it and melt it down. This makes a huge difference.
Thomas Haas would have a better product his staff were at the top of their game and if he used products with ingredients that are the best available. He should increase prices to improve quality.
I do like the ambiance of the store and its location and have never found the wait long.
I hope the quality will improve and I'll revisit in a few months to try them again.
This is a good place to eat, have some romance and admire the North Van view.
Not pricey at all, but the food is first class. The service not bad, the place wasn't full we could have a little bit better service, but was OK. The wine list is pretty decent, and the cocktails well done.
I really recomend this restaurant.
But the only thing was the coffee. It was not good. I really hate it when you pay for a great meal and they make you bad coffee.
Can't these places do better?
We tried making a reservation several times and were greeted by really grumpy maitre' ds who seems like they had more important things to do. We have visited the restaurant twice and were disappointed both times. Our first visit was marred by the fact that the patio was booked by a function even though we were told that it was a first come first served basis when we made the booking. We told the maitre' d when we arrived that were disappointed that the patio was unavailable and she should inform customers when they enquire. More customers that arrived had the same complaint. This is because their dining room is very small and the chairs are very uncomfortable. It reminded me of grandmother's "proper" dining room. The patio is definitely more casual and less claustrophobic.
The food is decent but service is so poor. Waiters expect you to order wine, and we were judged when we declined wine with our lunch.
The food is quite expensive and the price has been steadily increasing.
I would not recommend this restaurant at all. The only good thing about this place is that it is next to Brazza which has the best gelato and coffee in town.
why don't the burgers taste like beef?
Food:
Terrible. It's not a mistake so many people say "Vera's is better." We actually did a side-by-side taste test and Vera's IS better. Which makes me terribly sad for anyone who still eats here.
Portions are too small. Food is flavourless. teas are pretty good, but then, its hard to make a bad tea
Service:
Decent. Not great. But they don't drop water on you and they try not to throw the food at you, so I consider that a good day. Kudos for even being there, guys.
Ambiance:
Well. If you're into that kind of thing, it's okay.
Sorry guys, you're just not good.
Overall good
I have never really been disappointed here. The only negative at this location is that you usually have to wait awhile to get a table. However, the food, service and ambiance is definitely worth the wait
I normally walk by this place and never go in because it is always empty. But today was different and i had time to kill. I had the pannini here and it was terrible. It was fresh but it just was not made well and had no taste. It must have been made by cheap labour young staff as it was just bad. I feel really ripped off.
I should have just walked by.
I go to the Bakehouse all the time for tea and takeout pastries. I really like the place because of the very pleasant person at the cash register who smiles all the time. The tea was fine, the pastries are great. I will be returning.
Beautiful, yet Bleh
The ambience is awesome when you go in. I went in late night, so the vibe was all lounge-like and the lights had a nice glow. There was a gypsy band playing and it was nice.
My friend and I were in the booth. Very comfy and spacious.
The panini apparently wasn't that great ...my friend found it too small, and there wasn't much in the sandwich. Her drink was the worst; the drip coffee was so strong that she couldnt even finish it. It tasted more like an espresso .
Service was amateurish. She was nice, but clumsy. She did not set the cutlery properly, and she spilled the coffee on the table when she brought it.
Just a place to lounge and chat....nothing to rave about in terms of eating. Maybe a nice place for drinks and dessert. I'll have to try it out during lunch. dunno why the beat makes this place sound awesome.
Okay, so I've been there several times, but I guess I will stop going there.
In general, their service is generally OKAY. One of the waitresses gives really bad service. I went in and the restaurant wasn't so busy. She was standing at the counter and facing inside of the bar, and did not even turn to me and ask what I'd like. Instead, I had to ask her myself. She gave me a really unfriendly look. I don't know what's gotten into her!
Their food is okay, but they seem to gradually decrease the portion of food per dish, and raise their price recently?
I got to mention one thing that they don't seem to wash their table cleaning cloth that often. I always see them wipe their tables with the same cloth over and over again. When they finish, they just place it right back on their counter table (without even washing it). Yuk! I don't know if anyone of you have noticed it, but we all know how dirty that is.
I went there with a group of friends, because we're told it was a good place. So we called them and the waiter told us to make a reservation just because is 7 Pm on Saturday. Upon arrival we found out that the restaurant were empty, only 1 other couple eating. The ambiance is nicely dim but the place I think had a gas leak (maybe the heater), we sat by the window.
The portion is small and not worth the money...apparently they have raised the prices. At the end we were paying a lot more and it's just better not to go.
To make it worse, our only waiter (only 3 people working that night, chef, waiter, and busboy) didn't even know how to distinguish between a crushed red pepper and regular black pepper. She is probably a high school drop out because she made a mistake on our bills. At the end there was another couple walking in and I almost had the urge to just tell them to leave the restaurant. We're not coming back even if the food is free....
I guess this location is just not busy enough to support a cafe. The old cafe trafiq had great breakfast and nice people. The new trafiq is very slow, has unprofessional service. One persons meal was finished before the other arrived, and we waited forever to get the order in or water. The wait was not worth it.
I have not had anything good here and will have to go to the local bucks down the street. Too bad. I like to support the local guy but there is nothing fresh here.
I went to Bellagio's after dinner the other night because I was attracted by the big gelato sign. I foolishly had the gelato instead of just walking away. Both the chocolate banana and the strawberry gelato were quite bad. The chocolate banana had no flavour, and the strawberry tasted like citrus, not like any kind of berry found in Nature. The cone was neither good nor bad.
If I had gone to Mondo gelato instead (Robson Street), I would have gotten something a lot better. What was I thinking?
oh yeh, the server was so rude too me. Why did she have such a bad attitude when i told her i did not like the gelato.
I love this place now. My friend told me about it and I am hooked. Best lattes in Vancouver. Good gelato and food too.
Service is fast and friendly. Prices are not high. Clean and well run.
If you are looking for a good coffee shop I think Brazza is one of the better ones you will find on the North Shore
