Don't Take It Too Seriously - Quirky and Plenty of Fun
Submitted Monday, April 4, 2011 - 6:11pm [Dine in]

Let's face it - the Eatery is a Broadway staple that has stood the test of time for good reason. It's quirky. It's fun. And they take care of you. Perhaps it is not the most pristine environment. And perhaps the sushi is not fit for the upwardly mobile. But then again - where can you go that gives you such a lively atmosphere without the worry of what shoes you've sported or whether the waiter considers you a big tipper. They want you - period. And it shows. From the bustling pace of kitchen chefs to the attentiveness of staff without lurking over your shoulder every two seconds - the experience surely meets its benchmark. And talk about variety. No. The Eatery hasn't set out to break any records, nor has it the air of certain snobbish joints around town. The Eatery is - however - a welcoming bundle of good ol' fashioned fun - and, of course, fish. How can you beat that...

B-R-U-T-A-L Service.

The food is characteristically great. Everyone would probably agree. Unfortunately, the food quality and its uniquely vegan character, coupled with the ambience of a hippie homestead has lead to the utter hijacking of all things decent and any sense of decorum when it comes to customer service. In other words - your attendance is totally taken for granted, regardless of how they treat you.

If the staff chatting away behind the register while you wait eons for just about anything, and if the sprinkle of arrogant and smug staff coupled with a nice balance of sheer obliviousness chiming away to some spiritual blather about "love" and one's "karmic" destiny doesn't drive you nuts - it will certainly leave you with a taste in your mouth that pales in comparison to some of the charming dishes that the Naam is renowned for. Yes. Staff have become so catatonically neglectful of customers (some staff knowingly so) - that one goes for the food - but suffers the subtle abrasiveness of rude, spaced-out flakes who'd rather smoke up in the garden than attend to paying customers. In short, the food is good. The service - is a disgrace - and something that the restaurant is also unfortunately renown for.

But hey - who gives a f.... Right?

Banana Leaf3005 W Broadway, Vancouver
Simply Outstanding
Submitted Saturday, October 3, 2009 - 6:33pm [Dine in]

The Kitsilano Banana Leaf is a superb mix of friendly staff, attentive service and great food. Having frequented the establishment for some time now, I can only praise the restaurant for their diligent and hard-working approach that creates a dining experience that leaves one with a smile on their face and a pleasantly plump belly. From a variety of great portions and appetizers equally as wonderful, the Banana Leaf is a sure hit for the wanton diner. Simply outstanding.

Topanga Cafe2904 West 4th Avenue, Vancouver
Attila the Waiter - Decent Food - Terrible Service
Submitted Saturday, April 11, 2009 - 8:44am [Dine in]

Having been an avid diner at Topanga Cafe, one would think that although service should be consistent for all who enter the restaurant those that frequent the establishment might just earn a few extra respect points from the servers. But such is hardly the case at Topanga Cafe. Sadly, it is a well known fact that one particular long-time server has continued to treat his customers with, well, a less than welcoming experience as he slings not only the food but his disdain as well. The food is very good, but the flavour left in one's mouth after such abusive service detracts from even the most tasty meal. Unfortunately, other servers who actually make an attempt at service wane in the wake of this individuals preposterous treatment of customers by leaving them alone without noting that their water or beverage is empty, by delivering discouraging looks when you ask for chips and salsa, by rolling his eyes as he slams down your meal without the slightest hello or acknowledgment that you are actually a paying customer. In fact, the vibe given off is so strong that many a fellow diner have confirmed my suspicions. You see, I do like to give an establishment and staff a fair shake when it comes to food and service and will repeatedly venture to such restaurants as Topanga Cafe to ensure that maybe I missed something - but I stand fervently by my first hand experiences - the service is overshadowed by the Ogorish and Boorish behaviour of a solitary and angry individual who persists in taking out his frustrations on the customers.

Apathetically Terrible
Submitted Saturday, October 18, 2008 - 9:25am [Dine in]

Once I began to feel that things are hardly right, I dine another few times to ensure that the restaurant didn't, say, have a bad night and to give the owner and staff a fair shake. Having gone a total of four times once I sensed the experience was off, my impression of Cipriano's has been confirmed. Simply put, the service is atrocious, the care and attention to the little things (water, etc.) is non-existent, the food is over-priced and mediocre, and the staff argue uncomfortably with one another in the presence of guests. Cipriano's may fool customers into believing they are worthy of your dollar as VERY FEW of the other reviews indicate, but please trust my advice...seldom have I dined at a restaurant where such apathy toward its operation exists.
