West Restaurant + Bar2881 Granville Street, Vancouver
worth every penny

The best food I have ever tasted, anywhere. Spectacular flavour and presentation, excellent service, pretty much exactly what fine dining should be. I highly recommend this restaurant. Our table was not ready when we arrived so the manager bought us a bottle of champagne, which more than made up for the wait. The best way to blow $500.00 in Vancouver.

I read in another review that this restaurant doesn't advertise, well, they probably should. I went on a wednesday night and aside from the person I was with, were the only people there. We would have left had we not taken a taxi to get there. We were there for over an hour and still nobody else came in. I can't really say anything bad about the food, but I don't agree that this is anywhere close to the best in Vancouver. It was good, but nothing was really exceptional or original. Our opinions probably would have changed had the place been a bit busier. The wine list is awful. A cheap by the glass only, which is a joke for a place like that. Hopefully the lack of business was a temporary thing, because I would try it again, but on a night when I wouldn't be the only table there. Service was decent, but when you're the only customer...

what the...?
Submitted Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - 10:21pm [Dine in]

I've eaten at Poncho's before and it was quite good. Unfortunately things have changed.

Our entrees came out before our appetizers, so we asked for our appetizers first, which took an additonal 20 minutes. When our entrees eventually came out, 20 minutes after our appetizers had been cleared, they were THE SAME plates we had originally been served! They were cold and scuzzy looking after sitting under a heat lamp for over half an hour, so we sent them back. 10 or 15 minutes later, they came out again, still only lukewarm, but at that point we decided that sending them back again would ensure that we would spend at least another hour there.

The service was terrible, we weren't quality checked even once, and nobody apologized for the numerous errors. It seemed that we were not the only people experiencing this as well. I love mexican food, but I will not ever set foot in there again. I would have given the service a zero if I could have. The ambience was ok, what I would expect from a mexican place, but didn't even come close to making up for the inattentive, inept service.

One of my favorites in Vancouver. If you don't like crowds, then don't go. The food is excellent, the wine list is good and not too overpriced. I've never had bad food there, the service is friendly but efficient, which is fine with me considering how busy they always are.

Dine out at Diva
Submitted Friday, February 3, 2006 - 2:37pm [Dine in]

For a $35.00 menu, Diva was quite impressive. The menu was creative and they had an upsell feature where you could order up to 5 courses instead of the standard 3 for an additional $10.00 per course. I had the duck terrine, which was nice, it was creamy and smooth, but a bit underseasoned. My wife had a salad, which was just that. We also had an order of scallops, which was an add-on course. They were good, but they had not been cleaned properly and had a grainy texture. If I eat there again, I won't be having scallops. We had the tuna and veal cheek for main courses, which were both delicious. The tuna was slightly over salted, but the veal cheek was delicious. The desserts were both delicious, not surprising considering that Diva has arguably the best pastry chef in Vancouver in Thomas Haas. The service was excellent, I can honestly say that it was some of the best service I have ever experienced at a restaurant. Hopefully they are consistent, because it would be a let down to go there and not have service of that calibre again.
Overall, it was a very nice dinner, still very expensive even with the promo menu but worth another look another time.
