Gala Seafood Restaurant8300 Capstan Way, 1008, Richmond
Best Value for Dim Sum
Submitted Sunday, February 8, 2009 - 1:54am [Dine in]

There is definitely better dim sum out there, but this place never disappoints me. You won't find better value for the quality and selection. There are fewer choices to choose from now that they got rid of the trolleys, but consequently the food is fresher. My favorites include steamed rice rolls filled with fish, sui mai, shrimp spring rolls, and fried shrimp dumplings. The servers are also really sweet after getting to know them. I will definitely continue to come back to Gala Seafood on casual occasions or when I don't feel like paying the higher prices at Kirin or Victoria Garden.

Go to Brown's Instead
Submitted Sunday, February 8, 2009 - 1:45am [Dine in]

This place is like a poor man's Brown's Social House. The menu and prices are comparable, but the interior is older and run down and the food is not nearly as good. I had an appy and a burger, but I could do much better at the local pub or White Spot. Don't waste your time here. I guess others agree because the place was practically dead when I went on a weekend during the evening.

Great Experience
Submitted Sunday, February 8, 2009 - 1:32am [Dine in]

There a lot of positives to this place: good location away from all the other chaotic Asian hotspots in Richmond, ample parking, clean and modern decor, vast menu, and good quality sushi. The staff were also very friendly and attentive. They refilled my green tea at least 4 times. A wee bit on the pricey side, but worth it for the quality of food, service, and atmosphere. I will definitely be coming back here and would recommend it to others. The ambiance and service sets this place above other Japanese restaurants.

Quite Good

It's so nice to enjoy a Greek meal without the cheesy blue and white, fisherman-themed decor! Great ambiance with a tasteful, modern interior. I thoroughly enjoyed almost everything that was ordered. The fried calamari was light and tender. The meat moussaka was also very delicious. Served with a side salad, the portion wasn't huge, but definitely enough to fill you up if you have a starter or dessert. I also loved the honey puffs covered with toasted sesame seeds that I ordered for dessert. Don't order any of the soups. They were all a dissapointment. The hostess was welcoming and friendly, but the other staff that served us had attitudes.

I would definitely return based on the food and ambiance. A bit pricey for Greek, but nothing outrageous. In terms of value I think it's okay. Each table is provided warm pitas, garlic olive bread, and tzaziki. This place absolutely met my expectations.

Maru-WOW!
Submitted Sunday, February 1, 2009 - 9:44pm [Dine in]

One of the best sushi restaurants in Richmond. If you're looking for good quality, authentic Japanese food, look no further. The spicy tuna sashimi just melts in your month! It's also topped with crunchy roe and the combination of textures is sublime! The sushi is always the perfect temperature and rolled with care. The restaurant is relatively new so it's pretty clean and tidy inside. But it's really tiny so make reservations when you can. I come fairly often and will continue to do so!

The food is really good here and exceeded my expectations. They have good quality sushi and really interesting and inventive rolls to choose from that you won't see at every other restaurant.

I'm not crazy about the location and the atmosphere is below average (a bit dingy and run down), but I'll come back based on the food alone. A wee bit pricier than comparable sushi restaurants, but for the taste and quality, it's worth it. I would recommend it to others for sure.

Shanghai Wonderful Restaurant8380 Lansdowne Road, #110, Richmond
One of the best in Richmond
Submitted Sunday, February 1, 2009 - 9:14pm [Dine in]

If you're looking for authentic Shanghai cuisine, this is one of the best restaurants in the lower mainland in terms of food, value, and atmosphere. I'm Asian and they have some of the best juicy steamed pork dumplings you'll find. Other favorites include the smoked duck, peking duck (2 courses), sticky rice siu mai, green onion pancakes, potstickers, seafood hot and sour soup, stir fried shanghai noodles (with pork, cabbage, and shiitake mushrooms). For those of you that don't know better, DON'T come here for Cantonese dishes like fried rice, chow mein, sweet and sour pork, etc. which they do have, but don't specialize in since this is Shanghai cuisine.

The service is good and the atmosphere is better than average. You won't find better value and will only find slightly better quality if you look REALLY hard and pay more.

This restaurant is a must. I come here often and will continue to keep coming back.

Moderne Burger2507 West Broadway St., Vancouver
Bland and overpriced
Submitted Sunday, February 1, 2009 - 9:00pm [Dine in]

Seriously...WTF? I really had high hopes for this place, but it was a huge dissapointment. The menu indicates that the meat is unseasoned, but even after pouring on the salt, the meat was flavorless and bland. It's not like it has a flame broiled or grilled taste to bring out the natural flavors of the meat so I just don't get why they don't add seasoning. The bun and the fries (FYI you have to pay extra for fries) also didn't redeem the burger. There are so few selections on the menu. Every topping is an add-on that you have to pay for and there is nothing unique or interesting about them.

Cute, retro 1950's diner decor in a great location, but definitely not worth lining up for. You're much better off going to Vera's instead.

Tony's Fish & Oyster Cafe1511 Anderson St, Vancouver
Great!
Submitted Sunday, February 1, 2009 - 8:50pm [Dine in]

If you're looking for no nonsense fish and chips and chowder, this is a great place to go! They have a super thick batter (NOT breaded style) that's light and crispy. A good or bad tartar sauce can make or break a seafood restaurant for me. Theirs is great! They also have a creamy New England style chowder that hits the spot. I also recommend the oyster burger. It has a smoky undertone that I'm sure you'll love. I wish they had English style chips (you know...the kind that have a bit of the potato skin on the tips). Theirs are probably McCain frozen ones. That's my only suggestion for improvement.

At the entrance of Granville Island (an obvious tourist hot spot), Tony's doesn't jack up the prices. You get great value and will leave with a full stomach. Don't expect anything in terms of atmosphere, but it's a really cute place in an awesome location.

I'll be back for sure!

Fortune Garden Seafood Restaurant1475 West Broadway, Vancouver
Not bad, but overpriced for what you get
Submitted Sunday, February 1, 2009 - 8:32pm [Dine in]

I'm Asian and this restaurant is decent. Some dishes were good, some were mediocre, but none were awful or outstanding for that matter. Chinese food in this city is pretty competitive so in terms of value you can do much better. The portion sizes were smaller than average and the prices were a bit on the high side. Generally speaking (and I do emphasize this is a generalization), they serve Cantonese-style cuisine. If you order traditional Cantonese dishes, than you should have a good meal. I won't return to Fortune Garden again considering the fact that there are so many other places to choose from that are better in terms of quality and value.

WTF?
Submitted Sunday, February 1, 2009 - 8:21pm [Dine in]

I don't know why in the hell people line up for this place. It is by far one of the most overrated joints I've ever been to. The breakfast is nothing special and certainly not worth a 30+ minute wait. Does anyone else find it strange to have salad served with your savory breakfast? I've been to Amsterdam and don't recall this phenomenon. Give me a fruit salad, another piece of toast, ANYTHING, but not a freaking green salad. The pancakes are nothing to rave about either. The atmosphere is also cramped, run down, and not to mention kind of dirty looking. There are so many other places to have a nice breakfast in this city. Don't waste your time here.

Dan Japanese Restaurant2511 West Broadway, Vancouver
Authentic Japanese
Submitted Sunday, February 1, 2009 - 8:15pm [Dine in]

If you can appreciate the details that distinguish good sushi from mediocre sushi including temperature of the rice and fish and care taken to roll sushi properly, than you won't think twice about paying just a bit more than other sushi restaurants.

Great menu, excellent food, good service, and a cute atmosphere. And of course, your meal is served with good quality green tea vs. the watered down, bitter, or bad after taste green tea you'll find at cheaper joints. Another good way to gauge the quality of a Japanese restaurant.

If you are looking for excellent quality and authentic Japanese fair, Dan is the perfect choice for you. I know I'll be back.

Meets but doesn't exceed expectations
Submitted Sunday, February 1, 2009 - 8:01pm [Dine in]

Outstanding service and solid food (that meets but doesn't exceed my expectations), but the ambiance and overall vibe are really lacking. Appeals to an older crowd, which is reflective of the decor and the menu options There are so many other choices in this city and you just don't get enough value out of this place. Some dishes are excellent, but some are really mediocre. I guess if you know exactly which menu items are gems and only stuck to those choices, you'd be sure to have a great meal. If not, there are no guarantees.

Submitted Sunday, February 1, 2009 - 7:43pm [Dine in]

Good food, but nothing special so I question the overall value for what you pay. The menu doesn't have a lot of options to choose from and they should consider switching out some choices to improve it. On the good side, the place has a great ambiance and is perfect to catch up with friends or watch a game on their flatscreen TVs at the bar. Friendly staff and good service. I would recommend it to others and go back myself to catch a quick meal and a few drinks.
