Needs Improvement - FAST
Submitted Saturday, July 24, 2010 - 9:15am [Dine in]

Last nite 06/23/10 was one of those glorious west-coast evenings where you had 2 get out and enjoy. We picked Steveston since it was close to our Richmond home and offered a decent boardwalk, water back-drop and neat people-watching.

We had many dining options and had tried most of them and being a true casual-Friday, decided on take-out on the boardwalk. Many places were packed - including our fave "Pajos" and we didn't feel like waiting. And as we strolled by Shady Island - decided 2 give em a try. What a MISTAKE!.

You would think Fish & Chips are an EZ enuff meal to master but these guys missed-the-mark. We ordered one order of Cod & one Salmon and would share. We picked up the food and the fries were COLD - not luke-warm but COLD. WTF? Your restaurant was packed and you specialize in fish & chips! We immediately bring this to their attention and wait another 4 mins for fresh-fries and these are "acceptable" some hot mixed with some warm. By this time our fish had cooled-off and we found the batter heavy and too mushy. We spent $30 and felt ripped-off.

Next time we'll walk rite by this place and straight to Pajos - where they know fish & chips!

GOOD Dim Sum -- POOR Service
Submitted Sunday, June 20, 2010 - 4:52pm [Dine in]

After reading the food-bloggers; I am in agreement that this place could definitely benefit from some staff training, manners and courtesy. The staff - whether it be management or cart-ladies all have an "indifferent attitude" And yet this place was packed and lined-up. Why? Good authentic dim sum and decent prices.

We came for Father's Day and thankfully sent a designate to secure table @ 10:45 for our 11:00 am brunch. We had a part of 11 - so grabbing a large table at that time was fine. The service rotation of the carts here is very good and the selection was excellent.

The problems started when my wife wanted some water. She waited patiently and then decided she would go to bar and grab glasses herself (since self-service seemed the norm for many "regulars") One of the managers was extremely RUDE 2 her and she was less-than-impressed (this kinda dampened the brunch but we tried to push-thru.

Summary: very good, authentic dim sum. Decent prices and central location. However VERY poor customer service and they're NOT changing anytime soon (know this in-advance)

Great Location - OK Food
Submitted Sunday, June 6, 2010 - 3:31pm [Dine in]

Came here based largely on location (we were staying @ Delta) and website. And while it does offer an excellent view and back-drop - I am not sure I would return.

Order the mussels and frites and found this dish kinda bland (the frites with topping was tasty) but the mussels themselves were not tasty. Also had the smoked salmon - n brie pizza and this had a neat taste. The Heifeweizen was also nice but I am a lager-fan and they only had this and ales (which I find a lil' 2 heavy)

Oh well - the view and ambiance is nice

Good Breakfast Joint
Submitted Sunday, June 6, 2010 - 3:25pm [Dine in]

Decided 2 do a US search for Victoria breakfast spots and this hit my radar. I liked that it was away from the Wharf-core so line-ups and crowds wouldn't be a problem.

Ordered the Marge Benny and wife had the Tis french toast. My benny was done well (except eggs a lil' harder than I prefer). My wife who is not a breakfast-fan found her french toast interesting (perhaps a lil' 2 sweet) and would of preferred traditional interpretation.

All in all - solid spot 4 breakfast.

Delicious Burgers - Quality Ingredients - Excellent Execution
Submitted Sunday, June 6, 2010 - 3:18pm [Dine in]

Decided upon this place based on US reviews plus the positive comments from several different people when asking for directions to the PB.

We were undecided between the PB ad the Red Fish - Blue Fish on the wharf. We chose PB since it was a very sunny Saturday afternoon and knew the wharf-place would B lined-up. Boy were we GLAD - the PB is a kool lil' eclectic-spot and the food was spot-ON.

We enjoyed the classic cheese burger and Blue Cheese lamb burger (we cut them in half and swapped). We also ordered one with fries & one with onion rings. Everything was exceptional (including the lagers). This place ROCKS - and we'll B back!

Better Than We Expected
Submitted Monday, May 31, 2010 - 12:54pm [Dine in]

We recently had an opportunity to try this place on a Friday evening. The restaurant was busy but we were seated promptly. Like Kitchen Devil - we had heard mixed reviews on this place so our expectations were on guard.

We were pleasantly surprised by the food and equally impressed with the service. We enjoyed the Halibut and Chips and their Beef Dip (both recommended by our server). The Joes lager was a also enjoyable. The only glitch was that the fries were somewhat cool - and our server brought a plate of fresh ones right away.

This is a GREAT and welcome addition to this area and we'll B back!

RIGHT Idea - GOOD location - WRONG Approach - POOR product
Submitted Thursday, May 27, 2010 - 7:34am [Dine in]

To be fair and 2 defend the owner - the idea of staring an artisan bakery in an area known for foot traffic and tourists is a good strategy. The gentleman is a Euro-style "large-N-in-charge" kinda guy and has a bold approach to corralling people into the bakery BUT then the experience falls-down.

Unfortunately, the bread is just NOT outstanding and @ $10 a loaf it should be. There is nothing memorable and magical - I am not sure the Romanians are known for their baking skills like the French, Italians or Jews.

If you are in Richmond and truly want a honest loaf of bread or other baked goods - go to Garden City Bakery @ Garden City & Blundell (but they R not open on Sundays). GREAT European Rye & BEST cinnamon rolls not to mention Knishes

GOOD Pho - POOR Parking
Submitted Thursday, May 20, 2010 - 6:57am [Dine in]

This place is rite beside the busy Save-On-Foods and shares same parking w/ Nandos Chicken however this WON'T matter much since they are moving to Westminster Hwy across from Public Market.

The pho was served extremely fast and was very flavorful. The usual condiments (bean sprouts, basil & lemon wedge) however no lil' chili. A nice feature was that they will make your soup "spicy" . Only gitch was kitchen forgot my spring roll order and had 2 B reminded - after I finished soup.

Would definitely recommend and will B back!

Average At Best - Best A Miss
Submitted Saturday, May 15, 2010 - 12:22pm [Dine in]

Stopped in here for a quik-snak before concert @ Summit Theatre at Cascades Casino across the street. Decided 2 go here - since I normally "like" pub fare and surely it would B better than anything in the casino. BOY, was I wrong.
Especially mediocre were the nachos ($12.95) and the cheese was barely melted - how the Fu_k do you mess-up nachos? Best a miss and there R probably many better places 2 go than here

All the hype about new ownership and different venues canNOT help this place that really needs a complete Restaurant Makeover.

I get the feeling they're trying to emulate a "Blue Canoe" style finer dining - westcoast casual affair. They FAIL on this count as well as the live music stab.

Fresh ingredients, prepared exquisitely offering fair-value will be REQUIRED for this place to succeed. They can keep changing owners and venues but until they understand the above mission - the bad reviews will keep streamin'-IN

Surprised By Good Reviews
Submitted Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 6:52am [Dine in]

I am very surprised by any good review of this establishment. Equally surprised that it won some Georgia Straight award (really makes me question integrity of award). And are surprised this place gets any customers.

It must be for the alcohol and deck since their food is REALLY bad yet they charge like they're the friggin' Four Seasons. Have been here twice (at friend's insistence) and have been disappointed buy the food each time.

They should have a menu or restaurant makeover...

Exotic Taste - GREAT Value
Submitted Saturday, February 27, 2010 - 11:57pm [Dine in]

This lil' neighborhood spot features exotic Malaysian/Singaporean cuisine at bargain prices. But don't expect a fancy dining room and they don't take interac/Visa - so bring cash.

What they do well - is cook fragrant curries with an exotic smell that emanates before you're even at the order desk. And even though they don;'t have fancy digs but do have all-u-can-drink tea and water for your enjoyment.

NEAT Room - KOOL Tapas
Submitted Saturday, February 27, 2010 - 10:56am [Dine in]

Have been here a couple times and can always depend on good beer selection, neat tapas selection and a eclectic room with kinda-kool buzz to it.

Notable were the prawns, mussels (Normandie & Orleans), frites and seared tuna - average (at best) were the chicken wings.

Not for the budget-minded

BEST 2 Go If Ur Asian
Submitted Thursday, February 25, 2010 - 2:15pm [Dine in]

There is nothing wrong with this place besides that fact that it resides in a lil' Asian strip mall off Park Rd. Everything here is edible and really fit's the Asian comfort-food tag coined by fellow DineHere reviewer.

Tasty congee and wun tun noodle soup are the features and most non-Asians may not feel as-ready 2 experiment. It's kinda like dining at ur GrandMa's house. Nothing fancy and no fuss.

Nondescript BUT Excellent
Submitted Wednesday, February 24, 2010 - 7:49am [Dine in]

Stumbled upon this place about a year ago whilst shopping @ Staples (old London Drugs at # Rd & Williams). Peered thru the window and noticed no one else but hey - I was hungry and this was convenient.

Ordered some salmon, tuna nigiri, dynamite roll and a miso soup. When food arrived - i could NOT be more delighted. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. I ordered several more nigiri pieces (I was hungry). Brought my wife the following week and she too was amazed. We have been loyal customers since and recommend this to everyone.

I have dined at many fine sushi bars including Tojos and even Sen Sei in Maui (one of top 5 sushi restaurants in the world). While this lil' place canNOT match their exotic selections and plate detailing - I truly am impressed with their freshness and taste.
