Got sick from eating here..
Submitted Friday, March 20, 2009 - 10:07am [Dine in]

I wrote a review, but it must have been deleted.

Anyways, I ate here with my other half and we both got really sick eating here. It wasn't food posioning, but I would say the cleanliness of the place probably. We both got sick right away eating here and were sick for the next couple days. My other half got sick last time we ate here about a year ago as well.

The first table we were seated at smelled really bad, so we asked to move to another table, and they politely moved us.

Service, decent, except we ordered spici tuna sushi and they brought out a spicy tuna sushi, which we ate, loved, and then they brought out another spicy tuna sushi (which looked like regular spicy tuna roll) and then took away the first half eaten order of spicy tuna sushi and told us it wasn't supposed to be for us. It was a strange moment.

Ambiance - ok, but I just didn't like how the first table smelled.

No matter how much I crave the food, I would not go back to this location.

Mmmm...Chicken Fajita
Submitted Thursday, February 26, 2009 - 11:05am [Dine in]

I go to the Pacific Centre location regularly, almost every morning, so I was happy to know they had a location close to home.

I find the coffees here are alot tastier than Starbucks, well, my white chocolate mocha's anyway. The chicken fajita is soo delicous! It comes grilled and hot and the flavours are so yummy. I can eat those everyday! I'm getting hungry thinking about it now. I made my other half try it and now he is addicted as well.

The value is pretty good, especially since on their cards they include a 10% discount on everything. My mocha's come out to $2.79 after the discount where as Starbucks comes out to $4 something.

Ambiance? Its inside metrotown in the middle of crazy people traffic, but worth it for the chicken fajita. MMmmm...

Where's my change?
Submitted Sunday, February 22, 2009 - 7:46pm [Dine in]

We've been ordering take out from Green Basil because its close to home, and we like the food a bit better than Thai House across the street.

Food: Pretty good on certain days. Sometimes it can be super greasy, but tastes much better than Thai House across the street. The seafood is good, and its not cheap tiny shrimps but actual prawns in the fried rice.

Service: Horrible! Even though we only order take out, we get horrible service on the phone, and when we go to pick it up, we are not given any change! The first time, ok, maybe they were busy, but it was $3 in change and the other half should have asked for it instead of just walking out. But when it happened again, there's something wrong with the place. You are supposed to give change when we give you more money than what it costs!

Value: decent, alot cheaper than some other places

Ambiance: small, cozy I guess, we usually order take out so I don't really know.

I suggest if they want to keep their loyal customers, they should treat all customers with the same respect and give us our change back.

Horrible service...
Submitted Tuesday, February 10, 2009 - 5:44pm [Dine in]

So after the first couple horrible service nights I had, I figure I will go back to give them the benefit of doubt, since it most were hockey game nights and waiting for a drink for 30 minutes is NOT that bad...right?

We went on a Sunday late afternoon, and it was not that busy. Considering how the place was practically empty, it still took 15 minutes before we placed a drink order and food order at the same time. 15 minutes? That is insane, I don't know why I put up with it and not walk out. When you are hungry, you're just hungry. Food comes, average, but our drinks are empty and it still takes forever for a waitress to come by and ask for refills, etc. There was a table full of cute boys by us, and they were being waited on hand and foot. Next time I go to this Earls (which will now be never) I will make sure to bring a pack of six packs with me in order to get decent service!

DOV - excellent!
Submitted Saturday, January 31, 2009 - 7:55pm [Dine in]

I have to say, this has been one of the most wonderful experiences I've had for Dine out and for regular service! The service and food has blown my expecations!

Food: I had the mussels for appy, other half had the scallops. The scallops were good, the mussels great, but the sauce was a little too salty. It must have been the bacon, but it was a little too salty for my taste. The halibut I had for entree was cooked to perfection with the frites... the roast lamb the other half had was cooked perfectly, fell off the bone, tasty. The desserts were great. We had the chocolate obsession and the vanilla bean creme brulee...It was delicious! I never eat dessert and this was the first time I ate my dessert and completed it. My bf was shocked!

Service: Excellent! Above exceptional! Our water was changed all the time and was always cold with ice cubes in it. My wine glass was never empty. It seemed there were only 2 waitresses working the night, and the place was packed, yet they did not skip a beat.

Value, we had the dine out menu, so the value was great

Ambiance, it was nice, romantic, cozy.... It was small, yet there was plenty of space between the tables.

I highly recommend this restaurant. The food was great and the service was excellent!

Pretty good for AYCE
Submitted Thursday, January 22, 2009 - 10:26am [Dine in]

We've been looking for an AYCE for a while. We decided to try this place during happy hour, which is 4:30 - 6:30pm, for $13.95 pp. Not bad in regards to pricing.

Food: It was pretty good considering it was AYCE. We ordered quite a bit of food. The cones are great, I love them. The sashimi was ok, the teriyaki was pretty good, and the ika karaage's are good.

Service: The food came out so fast. Our drinks came right away. Our first order came out in less than 10 minutes. Our second order came in 5 minutes after we placed the order.

Value: For $13.95 for AYCE, I say thats a great value. And the food is pretty good, so well worth it.

Ambiance: Private seating, not so exposed to others around the office. But just like every other Japanese restaurant.

We'd definitely come back again, food was good, and service was good.

Good size portion for DOV
Submitted Friday, January 16, 2009 - 11:22am [Dine in]

We thought we'd try this for DOV instead of Maria's Taverna. THe only reason we chose this restaurant over the other because the meal was supposed to come with Tzaziki and Pita bread, and we'd get to order the homous for appetizer along with something else.

Food - the appetizer was ok portion, a bit small, and the main meal was a pretty good sized portion, but it did NOT come with Tzaziki and Pita bread. The bf ordered the Roast Lamb dinner, and it did not come with tzaziki and pita bread. He asked for some tzaziki on the side, and we were charged extra for the tzaziki! Very upsetting since the menu did say it was supposed to come with it. Anyways, the lamb as ok, really fatty though, if you like a lot of fat in your meat. I had the veggie moussaka, which tasted pretty good.

Service - It was great when we first got there, but once we got our main meal, it took us 15 mins after we were done eating for someone to come take our plates away and then we had to wait another 15 mins before we were served our dessert.

Value - DOV is a good price, but their menus are a bit pricey. You can get cheaper value elsewhere for greater value of food.

Ambiance - it was pretty good.

I doubt we'll go back on a regular night, probably only for DOV. Next time we'll make sure they DO serve Tzaziki if stated on the DOV menu.

Looks nice, thats about it
Submitted Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 4:30pm [Dine in]

I usually go to Cactus for a quick bite or for drinks to watch the hockey games.

Food - I usually always order the garden burger with no mayo. The last time I went, I ordered the garden burger with no mayo, and instead of mayo, they substituted it for mustard... MUSTARD!... and not just a tiny bit of mustard, they slathered the entire top and bottom bun with it. It was gross, I couldn't take more than 3 bites.

Service - it was ok. When it gets busy, expect to wait 15 minutes before getting another martini

Ambiance - the lounge area is nice...much better than the cactus on kingsway.

I don't know, food quality has gone down in the past year... I literally rather go get my burger at McD's and watch the game at home than paying $14 for a crappy burger with subpar service.

Not that great anymore...
Submitted Friday, January 2, 2009 - 5:05pm [Dine in]

I first tried their dimsum about 10 years ago and deemed it one of my favourite dimsum places...I regrettably retract my decision, it is now one of the worst places you can go for dimsum.

The head staff have all changed heads, while some of the servers are the same, some super nice and friendly while others as rude as they can get.

The chopsticks were sticky and gross, so we asked them to be replaced. We were given new sticky and gross chopsticks. The dishes had crust stains on them, which was gross.

The food isn't good either. I find the dimsum at some of the other older/ugly looking restaurants on kingsway alot better tasting. I came here 2 weeks ago, there was a huge fly flying around the place on a busy Saturday afternoon. I went there yesterday for New Years (down the street from our hotel) and the same huge fly was flying around the place. Imagine how much food he's been sitting/snacking on during that 2 week period.

I am officially done with pink pearl. It's not as good as it was years ago.

Cockney Kings Fish & Chips6574 Hastings Street, Burnaby
Great fish and chips
Submitted Friday, January 2, 2009 - 4:53pm [Dine in]

My other half has been craving fish and chips, so based on all the great reviews, we decided to try Cockney's.

When we first walked in, we were a little hesitant. It was half full, and the remaining open tables had dirty dishes on them and obviously, staff was too busy to clean them up. We sat down in the middle of the restaurant and pushed the dishes to the side.
Waiting about 3 minutes, and still no waiter/waitress to clean up the dishes/bring our utensils/take our order. We said we'd give it 3 more minutes max before walking out, when eventually someone came.

We had all you can eat fish and chips, and I was surprised as to how good they were. The fish was not overly drenched in oil as some other all you can eat places, and the fries were perfectly crispy and hot. I ended up eating all my chips before my fish...
Each time my other half ordered more fish, it would come in less than a minute and would come out fresh and steaming hot. It was crispy, yet not overly drenched in batter and oil. Tartar sauce was tartar sauce.

Most places you leave feeling full and heavy and tired after...after leaving here, we left feeling really full and not heavy at all, which was surprising. I can't eat more than 2 pieces, but we'll definitely go back since the other half has fallen in love with the fish and the price here. You can't go wrong for great all you can eat fish and chips under $10.00.

Great food
Submitted Friday, December 19, 2008 - 8:37pm [Dine in]

I've driven past this place many times and always wanted to try it out.

I'd have to say, it was super clean inside. It wasn't what I expected. The food was great. We had the combo - prawn brochette/ chicken brochette/ deep friend wonton with rice and the pho. The food was much better than most places. It tastes alot healther, not oily at all like most places, and the vegetables/basil leaves were all fresh. It's alot better than most of the pho restaurants down the street. I'd have to say the pho broth was soooo delicious! I devoured the entire thing, including the entire soup, and I usually don't do that.

I will definitely be going back, as this will be my new pho spot.

Hidden Gem
Submitted Wednesday, December 17, 2008 - 12:01pm [Dine in]

We were referred to this place by some friends, so we decided to give it a try. When you drive by, it doesn't look like much...but once you walk in the doors, you feel the whole greek ambiance. It's nice, cozy and clean.

The staff was great. There was only 1 waitress working that night, the place was completely packed, and yet, we were not left unattended.

We ordered appetizers and the roast lamb dinner. Appetizers filled us up, so when the dinner came, we could barely touched it. The dinner itself was very large in portion, and the lamb was literally, fall off the bone, tender and delicious. The prices were very reasonably for the size of the entrees.

We will definitely be going back.

doubt we'll go back...
Submitted Monday, December 15, 2008 - 1:50pm [Dine in]

It was my second time going, I decided to bring my boyfriend since he loves pasta.

The ambiance was great, it was pretty packed for a Sunday evening.

The server was quick to serve us as we haven't even taken off our coats and they were asking if we would like something to drink. I was waiting to hear the Risotto of the day, and wasn't told what it was.

We ordered mussels for appetizer, and half the mussels weren't even opened. We were disappointed with that.
Our pasta was good, but it was something we could have created at home easily. The donuts were recommended for dessert, and it came in 3 small pieces. Very disappointing as my boyfriend is a huge dessert fanatic.

I don't think we will be going back for some time.
