Togo Sushi1382 Guildford Town Centre, Surrey
Fresh, simple sushi
Submitted Friday, February 25, 2011 - 5:57pm [Take-out]

The sushi here is basic, no-frills, solid and fresh. Almost always very good texture and temperature, and if you're just looking for a quick, simple sushi run, this place'll deliver. It's not hit-and-miss either. Seems like it's the same people working every day and the quality barely ever varies.

Caprice Lounge & Grill965 Granville Street, Vancouver
AKA the The Lounge at Caprice
Submitted Friday, February 25, 2011 - 5:54pm [Dine in]

I went here for a friends Bday before clubbing, and it has a distinctively feminine ambiance to it. Sadly, I'm a guy, so that didn't work well for me. It was actually pretty quiet there, but they have an in-house DJ, a small but hip-looking bar, and an upbeat staff serving simple dishes like sliders (my choice). They'll also mix some nice drinks for the bar, but the main attraction is a chill place to get ready to hit up the rest of Granville.

Previously known as Lux, just in case anyone was wondering if this place is indeed one and the same. Oh, and get ready for a LOT of pink floodlighting. A lot.

Mahek Restaurant9470 120 St., Surrey
Worth a try in Indian-spoiled Surrey
Submitted Friday, February 25, 2011 - 5:39pm [Dine in]

Surrey is home to a large Indo-Canadian population and has the restaurants to go with it. That being said, there is no clear-cut winner and many will swear by different Indian restaurants leaving a newcomer to the rich foods confused where to start!

Mahek is as good a place as any though. Although the quality of Indian food (in my mind) varies wildly between the various restaurants in Surrey, Mahek is a solid choice. The butter chicken is delicious, the nann bread is decent and the samosas do the trick. The rice can be a little on the dry side however, but overall, Mahek works for me.

Grind & Gallery Coffee Bar, The4124 Main Street, Vancouver
At least it's open all night
Submitted Thursday, February 24, 2011 - 3:59pm [Dine in]

There isn't really a whole lot here besides the 24-hour label that makes it better (or worse) than any other coffee shop. It is a Waves equivalent that is darker and cheaply furnished, with strange pop-art paintings sold at questionable prices. Free internet and all-night service keeps this place at the top of my list of places to go during exam season, though, and the baristas are friendly enough.

Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House777 Thurlow Street, Vancouver
Favourite spot in the city
Submitted Thursday, February 24, 2011 - 3:38pm [Dine in]

Yeah, it's pricy. But for the experience you'll get and the class Joe Fortes delivers it with, it's worth it. Their meals are terrific across the board and there's no missteps or odd-man-out dishes; whatever you get, you'll like.

If you're new to the world of oysters, I suggest you try some. They're quite affordable and are a great way to start off, especially if you buy a handful and share with friends!

Lastly, best bread ever. They give you a sort of lobster dip concuction to go with, and it really gets you into the spirit of things. Joe Fortes is going to be where I go to class it up in DT!

Cosmos Greek Restaurant14871 Marine Drive, White Rock
Reliable Greek food on the beach
Submitted Thursday, February 24, 2011 - 3:31pm [Dine in]

I love Greek but I stick to the basics. The beef Souvlaki was good, the potatoes were amazing but the bread was a bit tough. Dessert portions are small but tasty. The atmosphere is friendly, and there is outdoor seating on the beach for summer and a fireplace inside for colder times. I know better Greek places DT, but in the White Rock/Surrey area, Cosmos is reliable.
