Finally got my hands on one of these subs
Submitted Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 1:11am [Dine in]

So finally got my hands on one of these subs after going to this place and being told that they're sold out (after 2pm). It was good for what it was and perhaps it was all the hype and the anticipation but i wasn't wowed. Next time if its after 2pm i would happily go down to Bon Cafe to pick one up. Can't comment on service, value, and ambiance b/c someone picked one up for me and i didnt pay but yet i have to fill in all fields =)

Went here for drinks with some friends and was suprised to see this place bustling with customers. the patio was full and had to wait for a table. The beer menu was extensive with many imports on available on tap. Service was great, server approached us many times to take our order but we needed more time to decide and she was fine with that. Overall, would definitely come back to try more beers and food!

Decent price for lunch
Submitted Thursday, June 4, 2009 - 1:59pm [Dine in]

Went here for lunch and had a mini set meal. Came to about $7 after tax and comes with cold drink. I ordered the baked porkchop on rice with a cold lemon tea. This is one of the usual dishes i order when i go to a hk style cafe but i found the tomato sauce to be a little on the sour side. I also found the pork chop itself to be a bit more fatty than i liked it to be. Overall it was edible but wasn't great. LOL. Also, I thought the lemon tea was way too sweet so next time i happen to come here i'll ask for the sugar on the side. The ambience however is just OK. Didn't really like it b/c it was very dark due to the black walls, seats, and tables i think. i suppose they wanted a more hip feel but it just doesnt work for me.

Had dinner tonite with a party of 5. Started off with some coctails which were good and not watered down. All had the prime rib dinner with caesar salad. Two of our orders were not right but no big deal as we fixed it ourselves. The steaks here are great and consistent. And for 24.95 for steak and salad with vegetables and potato id say its a great value. Service was great, server came by several times to fill waters, clear plates and check on us. Overall, a very nice casual dining experience with above average food. Highly recommend this location as this is our most frequented location.

Never disappoints
Submitted Thursday, June 4, 2009 - 2:15am [Dine in]

Went here for a family dinner on saturday and ordered the usual fried chicken wings and tried some of the other dishes never tried like the deep fried crab cakes, curry chicken. The crab cakes were ok although didnt taste much crab and the curry chicken was good reminded me of prata mans but had a more sweet coconut flavor. Arrived before the saturday night rush so service was good. This place never seems to disappoint when it comes to the food so highly recommended!

Better service on weekday night!
Submitted Tuesday, June 2, 2009 - 6:19pm [Dine in]

Been coming here for family dinners for years now. The food is usually very good compared to other restuarants of similar price and food. The usual items are cold platter with the usual items but theres has smoked salmon sashimi, cream lobster with "raw" noodles bottom, peking duck 2 ways, squab, etc. We usually also pre order a freshly baked tapioca pudding without red bean which is sooo delish when its hot from the oven!
Our most recent visit was night, had a party of 6, ordered our usual items. Service was strangely attentive probably b/c it wasnt very busy being a monday night. We must have had our plates changed 4 or 5x! I say this with ethusiasm b/c we're used to waiting 1/2 hr even with a reservation or them trying to rush us out by making the food come all at once but this particular night was different. Overall, would recommend this restuarant b/c the food is good albeit service is not the greatest when they're busy but if your looking for a chinese banquet type dinner this is a great choice on kingsway.

Mmmm get sum dim sum
Submitted Friday, May 29, 2009 - 6:57pm [Dine in]

Had dim sum yesterday morning here after picking up someone from the airport. Had dim sum many times before and also couple times for dinner. Dim sum here is pretty good compared to other restuarants in the area which is not many. Ordered the usual items like haw gah, rice rolls, sticky rice, spare ribs, deep fried squid, rice noodle wrapped chinese doughnut, egg tarts (baked fresh and very good). Only complaint is that it took awhile for the food to arrive but it was worth the wait b/c every item tasted like it was prepared fresh. Its a bit more on the pricy side compared to east no. 1 on renfrew and about the same price as prince but i would choose this place over the others. Service was decent, no complaints.

A pleasant suprise!!
Submitted Friday, May 29, 2009 - 6:50pm [Dine in]

Stopped in for a viet sub today and was pleasantly suprised! Tried the #45 special to go. It's $3 if you do take out. When i got home i was suprised to see it was packed with lots of meat and veggies. my only complaint is that there were hot peppers which i will ask for next time. It was delicious and definitely a great value.

Can't really comment on the service but the person who served me was very courteous and friendly. The ambience of the restaurant was clean, simple, and airconditioned =) Will definitely eat in next time and try the pho and rice dishes next time.

Excuse me... can we get a server?
Submitted Monday, April 27, 2009 - 12:49am [Dine in]

After walking around the village several times and trying to decide where to go for dinner, our party of 4 finally decided on pub food. There is an outdoor patio, the bar side and then a more quieter area in the back section of the restaurant. We chose the quiet section b/c the bar side was just too loud. We seated our selves at a nice table in front of the warm fireplace. After waiting for about 5 mins we got our own waters since we saw jugs and plastic cups on the bar counter -- ok fine so we grabbed our own waters. Then one of us asked the bar tender if we could get a server. 10 minutes went by and still no one acknowledged us. We finally flagged down a server to take our orders. It was a saturday night at 6pm and its understandable that they were busy on the bar side but the restaurant side only had 1 other table. The food was decent, your normal pub grup-- nothing to write home about. We chose this place as opposed to blacks across the street and we'll try that one next time. Won't be coming back.

Delicious Greek-- craving satisfied!!
Submitted Thursday, April 23, 2009 - 11:23pm [Dine in]

Had a craving for greek since last week and this certainly satisfied my craving!!! Ordered the lamb souvlaki plate for 8.99. you get a meat skewer, rice pilaf with tomato sauce (very tasty), greek salad, LOTS of tzaziki and 1/2 pita. The meat was tender and not overly cooked, nicely seasoned. I love how they give so much tzazkiki b/c i put it on everything!! Its fresh and delicious. doesn't leave my breath smelling too garlicky either. Great place for greek takout. You can eat in too, theres 2 tables.

Pleasant dinner
Submitted Thursday, April 23, 2009 - 11:14pm [Dine in]

Had a late dinner here last week with a friend. Had been quite awhile since having thai so we decided to try this place after reading the reviews here. The restaurant was at about 50% capacity at 8pm on a tuesday night. The decor was nicer than expected with nice wall pieces, dark wooden chairs and floor.

We ordered the green chicken curry, phat tai, and a bowl of coconut rice to share. The green chicken curry came extremely quickly in less than 5 mins. NOt much effort was put into presention and it tasted kind of bland. The chicken was also a bit dry and tasteless. The phat thai came 2 ways either a tamarind or tomato sauce. We chose the tamarind which is suppose to be a bit sweet. It was decent, had better. There was shrimp and teeny scallops in it but tasted like it was defrosted from the freezer. Would've been nice if it had more veggies too. Also the coconut rice didnt have any coconut flavor to it.
The service was good, no complaints. Server was very courteous and answered our questions. Also filled our waters couple times without asking. Would like to thank the server who ran out after us b/c my friend left her phone in there.

Would go back again to try other dishes.

Samurai Sushi House5888 Cambie Street, Vancouver
Big portions but it's all rice
Submitted Tuesday, April 14, 2009 - 10:20pm [Dine in]

Been to this Cambie location of samurai many many times but since just getting take out for dinner tonite, thought i'd do a review as well. There are 3 other locations by the same name but this location is not affiliated with neither the davie or fraser location. However, Banzai is the same owners as the cambie location. I go to samurai if im looking for quick sushi take out. They give huge portions and you can probably get full on 2 or 3 pieces of their house roll (i do anyways) but you get the picture. You don't have to spend much to get full here. PRoblem is, a lot of their rolls are big b/c there is so much rice!! The sashimi pieces are also very big and we usually have to cut them in half. Would definitely recommend this place for its value but quality wise tho i would go somewhere else.

Great food and great value!!
Submitted Tuesday, April 14, 2009 - 10:13pm [Dine in]

We have been to Liu's many times throughout the years and dined there couple nights ago. It's nice to see that this place is still consistent. Fave menu item is the deep fried chicken leg rice for $6.50 and what a deal it is for what you get. I usually only end up eating half my meal and packing the rest to go. As the previous poster mentioned, you get 3 drumsticks, rice with stewed minced beef and veggies. We also usually get the green onion pancake with beef which is pretty decent . The service on the other hand was a bit disappointing (and always has). It's a fairly small restaurant and ive only ever only seen 2 servers at one time. We were promptly seated but didn't get our tea until we asked for it after we ordered! But all in all, i would recommend this place to friends and still eat here about once every 6 months.

Decent Pho
Submitted Tuesday, April 14, 2009 - 10:04pm [Dine in]

Was in Richmond last week and decided to try this new location. The decor was fairly clean and looked decent. Nothing special, just looked like any other asian restaurant. Never tried the other Thai son restaurants and not sure if this location is run by same owners. I had the rare beef with tripe pho and my bf had the pho dat biet (house special). We didn't like how they boiled the sprouts a bit as we like it still kinda crunchy in the broth. Also, we were VERY thirsty during the meal which makes me question how much msg is in the broth. The soup was darker than I liked but it is my understanding that broth from the north and south vietnam have different tasting and colored broth.

Service was pretty much inattentive (like any other pho restaurant) but we got what we asked for promptly ie. more tea, bill. Would go back to try the rice dishes and would recommend to others.
