Boooo! Talk about your lunchbag let down!
Submitted Saturday, October 10, 2009 - 1:10am [Dine in]

Great concept poor execution. What a good idea and location, too bad they could never deliver all the delicious food we were hoping to have. After reading a few other poor online reviews (on another site) we still decided to give this place a chance as it was so convenient (we were going to the hockey game next door). A lot of people had given this place a major thumbs down due to pay parking - so we avoided it in advance and parked elsewhere. We walked over to the restaurant, assuming that it would be busy as it was a game night. We arrived 1.5 hours *before* the game start time. When we arrived, surprisingly, there was already a line up outside. So we waited in line. The bouncer was quite friendly and made the wait not too bad. We said we would sit in either restaurant/pub, whichever had a free seat first. So Finnegan's apparently had an opening and we went in. We were then told - oh, its actually standing room only and you have to stand until a seat becomes available. OK Fine. So we did. We sat at the bar, ordered a couple of drinks and made our way to the table after some time. Once there the server, although very polite, never once offered us refills or new drinks or appies or anything. We had to sit at a dirty table for about 10 minutes before it was cleaned off. From time to time, the server stopped by and was surprised that our food was still not there. I'm not sure why she was surprised - wouldn't she have had to bring it to us?? Everytime she came by she said she would check on it. The last time she came by, she said, "I'm really sorry, they're a bit backed up in the kitchen, it should only be about 2-3 minutes more". So after waiting an ADDITIONAL 10 minutes after that, we just left. We left cash sitting with our drinks and left. Not only was it annoying, disappointing and aggrivating - we were practically late for the game which is literally a 2 second walk across the street. We gave this establishment 1 hour and 20 minutes of our time and all we got was 1 drink each. I will NEVER go back unless they pay me.

They take care of you here
Submitted Friday, June 27, 2008 - 1:47pm [Dine in]

We chose this restaurant to celebrate a special anniversary and we were glad that we did. You can tell that their reputation is worthy and that their staff are experienced and more than just some "cook in the kitchen" or some "guy in a suit". They make you feel welcomed here and take the time to serve you right.

All the food was excellent and done just right. The vegetables were el dente perfect - not too soft not too hard or crunchy. The presentation was also wonderful, especially having the salad (including the dressing) made table side.

With the view, the atmosphere and the service, it is no wonder why so many choose to have their weddings here as well as other special occasions.

Glad I went
Submitted Friday, June 27, 2008 - 1:36pm [Dine in]

Went here for a family birthday and we made reservations in advance. None of us had been here before but all of us will go back. We all had excellent food, personally I had the Salmone al Limone which was cooked to perfection. I also had a few of their Lemon Drop martinis. A well made lemon drop is hard to find, but when they're done well, not much will top one. These were heavenly. Delish! I'd go back for one of those alone.

Our server was very attentive (and we didn't even tell them this was a special occasion). We left a significant tip as she was quick, efficient, polite, friendly - everything you'd want in a server.

Only a few nit picky things - the server "uniforms" included these cheesy/budget looking vests that didn't really suit the ambiance that the restaurant is trying to create.

I found the prices to be a bit high, although the food was good, which makes it somewhere that I won't be going all the time or become a regular at.

Hidden delight
Submitted Monday, March 3, 2008 - 5:11pm [Dine in]

I liked it. The decor was minimalist but not cold, especially with the exposed brick. All of the food was fabulous. Our waitress was attentive but not pushy. We shared several different dishes: yam fries, Crab and salmon cakes with an artichoke and green bean salad, basil and caper aioli, Cheese plate, and Salad of gorgonzola, roasted hazelnuts and poached pears. They were out of the veggie dumplings :( which I wanted to try - maybe next time. We also had a few martinis and mixed drinks (no beer for us). The food was absolutely delicious, worth the money and it was satisfying. The portions were not big but since we were sharing - we had enough of everything to get a good taste and not leave feeling hungry.

I would go back here again.

Top Notch Gnocchi
Submitted Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - 2:34am [Dine in]

I've been here several times and I always go back to the gnocchi - it's some of the best I have ever had. It melts in your mouth. For that reason alone, I go back. The service on the other hand has been a bit sketchy some nights. One night we basically swiped our own debit card, punched in the amount, waited for it to be approved and walked out. Odd. Never had to do that and it was also strange that nobody ever came to help us or inquire about it. BUT that was one time out of many. I also think it's neat to be able to look into their pasta drying room.

tucked in behind a few shops and a Starbucks on Cloverdale's main drag is this little secret. I found it by accident but the fact that I keep coming back is every bit intentional. I originally bought a big cake for a relatives 60th b-day party and never in my life have more people come up to me and asked me where I got this amazing cake - it was the white chocolate and strawberry. Since that time we've had that flavour a few times as well as ventured out and tried many of their other flavours and never once have we been disappointed or had any sort of complaint. I've since ordered a cake from Sinfull Hideaway at any excuse - birthdays, retirements, get togethers - whenever. I cannot say enough good things about these guys!

What a find!
Submitted Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - 1:54am [Dine in]

I wasn't sure what to make of this place when I saw it from the outside, but I'm glad I ventured in because what I had was an amazing meal that I would have thought came from somewhere more "downtown" or "upscale".

Everytime I have eaten there (which has been at least 3x) I am always impressed with the quality of food. Made from scratch and with fresh amazing ingredients. Honestly, I don't know how these guys keep some of this stuff on hand!! Also, they are open to suggestions or additions/deletions of ingredients to your meal with no hassel - they may even make a suggestion when you order it.

In a rush? Call them when you're on your way and they'll have your lunch to go or ready when you get there and you'll walk out with a meal that will satisfy you and your timeline. My b/f and I did this one night while on a way out and it was one of the best decisions we made - way better than stopping at a drive through. I can honestly not wait until I have some sort of party or even to see what these guys come up with.

The decor is not as amazing as their food, but from my understanding it is just a couple starting out and I personally would prefer them to continue putting their efforts into their food and eventually the decor will improve. It's not hideous or anything like that - just doesn't have as much flair as their food.

The service is always good, friendly and attentive. Everytime I've been there, the service has been great and they are extremely nice to everyone who has popped by.

This is one of my favourite pizzas EVER!!! Fresh flavours. Just don't plan on kissing anyone after unless they ate it too ;)

These guys have consistently delivered top notch pizza to our office for a really decent price considering the quality of ingredients - no chemicalized cheese here.

Not sure about the Ambiance as we've only ever had take out from them, so I voted average.....

I'm pretty picky when it comes to Chinese food and I'll always recommend these guys. They always come through for us when we're hungry at work and need a quick and decent meal. Their delivery drivers and staff always seemed to go the extra mile and deliver to us as quick as possible, even though we were slightly out of their delivery range.

Anton's Pasta Bar4260 E Hastings Street, Burnaby
Over Rated
Submitted Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - 1:09am [Dine in]

talk talk talk. Everybody LOVES Anton's - including David Duchovony (blah). I usually go to this restaurant once a year because some birthday boy or girl just "really has to go to Anton's!". Every time I try to go to keep an open mind but I just don't buy into the hype. Yes, their pasta is ok. Their service is ok, their decor leaves something to be desired and their prices are average but their portions are huge and if you eat it all they'll give you a pen. Hooray.

It takes a little more than that to make me want to wait in line (for what seems like FOREVER), then squish myself into the restaurant like a sardine (can I get some elbow room here please and NOT feel like I'm sitting in the laps of my neighbors?) and pay a pretty penny for so-so pasta. I have usually had to change my order many occasions when being there because they don't have the sauce or dish I want available at that time - and this is ordering something different every occasion we go! Strange.

It's ok but I think we can do a lot better.

Hola! Excellente Mexican cantina
Submitted Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - 12:55am [Dine in]

We love Charlie's and think that it is some of the best Mexican food to be had throughout the lower mainland. My guy loves Mexican and since there are not too many restaurants around the lower mainland we have pretty much eaten at all of them. The decor is authentic Mexican and the owners are extremely nice and cordial - they always stop by to chat at our table when we're in.

I have to say that this is some of the best guacamole that I've had and it's worth paying for. Also, their refried beens are good - we've been to some Mexican places where they beans have a weird, burnt or bland taste to them - but not at Charlie's.

The one down fall of Charlie's is their service. It can be slow at times and good help is hard to come by. There are some servers that know their stuff and others who don't but over all we've always received what we've ordered and everyone was pleasant. Honestly, with the speed - we just joke and say that when you walk into Charlie's you're on Mexican time. Anyone who has been to Mexico or South American will understand what that means.

bit of a greasy spoon atmosphere but if I'm in PoCo and someone suggests Chinese take out this one gets my vote. Never had any sort of questionable food from this place and it's normally ready quickly and we get a discount for picking it up.

I have yet to be disappointed with De Dutch. Their food is amazing and worth the price because it is made with real ingredients. Would chose this over IHOP any day - in fact I have and will continue to do so. The atmosphere is good and it is clean.

Greasy spoon with a cheap breaky and quick (usually service) Go there for breakfasts and come back for their prices. Even though this place is packed on weekends, you can still get in and out in a decent time frame. This has been Coquitlam's best kept secret for awhile now - I have taken many family and friends there for their first time and then they love introducing it to their crew too.

Always leaving disappointed
Submitted Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - 12:19am [Dine in]

I've dined at this location several times and I always leave disappointed. Whether it's the wait time to get seated, the wait time to get our food, or when the server forgets to "follow up", no drink refills or offers..... the list goes on - I have yet to have a close to perfect dining experience there. It's a nice place to look at but their food is over priced and average. Honestly, it's not worth the wait. There have been several times when someone suggests going there but I always redirect them to somewhere else just because of the wait. You can get better Italian food for less and quicker elsewhere.
