Tojo's Restaurant1133 W Broadway, Vancouver
Expensive, But worth it?
Submitted Friday, June 27, 2008 - 4:19pm [Dine in]

Yes, Tojo's was expensive. There's no doubt. Was it worth it? That of course comes down to personal experience, and of course the value that each individual attaches to their $. Personally I enjoyed my experience at Tojo's.

The kitchen food was particularly creative and the quality was good. The sushi on the other hand was okay, but nothing special. I can think of a handful of other restaurants that produce sushi of equal or even greater value.

The ambiance I found to be a bit boring, but definitely upscale. The open kitchen was quite impressive.

The proprietor himself was attentive, but a little over the top. We overheard him claiming to be the first sushi chef in North America! The inventor of the California roll?!?! Give me a break... My partner and I just rolled our eyes. Perhaps such unsubstantiated claims are good for business? I guess.

Overall, a good one time experience.

Our last experience here was not that great. The chicken in my ramen tasted like it had been cooked earlier in the day or the day before. It was also quite fatty and oily and created an oily layer on the top of the broth. Service is always quite good here. The waiting staff always seem eager to please. The place is in dire need of a face lift. But, I guess it is what it is, a place to grab a quick bite late at night.

Great Ambiance, Food needs some work
Submitted Friday, February 22, 2008 - 2:29pm [Dine in]

Finally tried Shiru-bay. We weren't that impressed. The atmosphere was great but the food was not. The tuna dish we had tasted straight from the can. Avoid anything resembling sushi as well. The rolls we sampled were barely edible in my opinion. Nice selection of interesting cocktails, though. Service was fine, although they weren't very busy to begin with. Might give it another try to see if things improve.

Below Average Kushiyaki
Submitted Thursday, January 17, 2008 - 9:11pm [Dine in]

After visiting this place I am truly perplexed. Why the line up? Why the crowds? All I can say is that a cozy atmosphere seems to go a long way, even when the food is below average. The food here was very disappointing. The service was just okay. The ambiance was cozy but nothing great. It just goes to show you that if a place like this can make it there is no shortage of inexperienced palates out there ready to pay plenty for subpar ethnic food. Not recommended.

A Positive Experience!
Submitted Wednesday, January 16, 2008 - 1:24am [Dine in]

We enjoyed our evening at Diva at the Met. The food was better than average, although a little overpriced. The Service was really good. I liked the fact that they upgraded our wine selection when they discovered they were out of the wine we requested. the ambiance was like a nice hotel (big surprise, as it is in a hotel!). Overall a good experience.

A Relic.
Submitted Sunday, January 13, 2008 - 1:24am [Dine in]

This place has been here forever. This in itself accounts for something. Restaurants inevitably have there ups and downs. Staying power usually indicates that the peaks outnumber the valleys (or they own the building!). Our experiences over the years at Sophie's reflects this. It's been good, at times we've been ticked, but overall we have always come back for more. I don't know... There's just something about the place. Perhaps it's having breakfast at 2 PM, or maybe it's the collage of objects that surround you and act as a distraction from the fact that the food is nothing to call home about. Give it a try and see if it sticks!

Great Brunch, Skip Dinner
Submitted Sunday, January 13, 2008 - 1:12am [Dine in]

The title says it all. We love the eggs benni here. Our mistake was staying for dinner. What a rip off! My lamb was in a severe state of annorexia, and for the money I paid, no thanx! What a rip off! Am I repeating myself? Well, that goes for my partner's meal as well. He had the canneloni. Chef Boyardee could have done just as well. Enough said! Go brunch. Dinner never!

This is a typical Japanese fast food chain style izakaya. There are countless numbers of them in Japan. The food is very mediocre, the ambiance bland, and the service inconsistent. Stick to the dishes they can handle (like gyoza). I prefer something more original and cozy in an izakaya. If it's late, you need a bite to eat, and you find yourself walking past, and you can't walk any further without food, sure. Otherwise, skip it.

What A Find!
Submitted Thursday, January 3, 2008 - 11:31pm [Dine in]

Stumbled by chance upon this wonderful place. A crowd is always a good indication of a restaurants worth, and if not for that we probably would not even have noticed Bistro Sakana. The food was really good, and we indulged ourselves in some of the more experimental fusion sushi on the menu. Great drink list as well. My partner swears that their original drink the "Salty Samurai" is the best cocktail he's had in a long time. Try the isobi agay, yam fries, and ginger hamachi. Service was attentive, although they could have used another waitress, as the servers were running their feet off. The atmosphere was also unique for a Japanese restaurant and was cozy and hip. Great music! We'll be back. Recommended!

Nothing Special
Submitted Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - 2:00pm [Dine in]

Tried this place with a few friends. We found the food to be fairly bland, really lacking something. The service was so so. We had to make a considerable effort to flag our waitress down even though the place was not that busy. The ambiance was good. Lots of exposed fir beams. A nice heritage building. As for the food and service, not recommended.

A solid choice if you need a substantial meal and don't want to break the bank. The service was good. The ambiance is nothing special. The booths are comfy, though. The food isn't outstanding but either are the prices. No complaints here.

Submitted Monday, December 31, 2007 - 1:19am [Dine in]

We came here several years ago and were not at all impressed with the food. Recently a second try produced the same results. The sushi we had was very mediocre, and DEFINITELY not worth the outrageous prices they are asking. We eat at Japanese restaurants regularily and the food here is nothing special. The isobi agay we had tasted like mush. Memorable only for the high bill! Not the food. Ambiance is not bad. Service was good.

Won't be going here again. The food was sub standard, the ambiance dismal, but the service was good. Not recommended. Like a Spanish version of Stephos without the large portions, relatively good food quality, and cheap price.

Non Existent Service, Okay Seafood, Great Atmosphere
Submitted Sunday, December 30, 2007 - 12:45am [Dine in]

Here's a classic example of a busy restaurant that relies largely on atmosphere and popular vibe. The food is okay, but expensive (hey, it's Yaletown), the service and attitude we received was intolerable. We usually tip well, not this time. Bad service can be forgiven with an apology, but the "hey dude" rude attitude from our poorly mannered server ensured that we won't be coming back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our last visit to Cin Cin. As our rating suggests the service was outstanding. Our server was a professional all the way. A thorough knowledge of wine and impeccable serving style left us feeling that we were in good hands. The food was excellent. The beef tartare was wonderful. The Lamb the best I have ever had, without a doubt! The desserts were also remarkable. A perfect experience. The decor was the only mediocre aspect of the entire evening. Highly recommended.

Well, the title says it all. The food won't knock your socks off but the view will. Beautifully decorated. I particularly enjoyed the waiting area in front of the fireplace. The food was o.k. The so called famous stuffed mushroom caps were a let down. Service was attentive, although our server didn't seem that confident in his job. I would probably go again for a special occasion.

We have been to Glowbal on several occasions, from brunch, to dinner, to late night snack. We won't go again. Too many bad experiences in the food department. The service is not bad, the decore is nice, but the food is very up and down. Unfortunately for us the balance has been down. Ther are much better places to eat in Yaletown.

We enjoyed En immensely. The food had a unique creative twist, and was a welcome change to some of the other more traditional Japanese places around town. The service was attentive and friendly, the decor contemporary and comfortable. The bill was more than we expected, but as they say, you get what you pay for!

mediocre food, great service
Submitted Saturday, December 22, 2007 - 9:29pm [Dine in]

After hearing so much about this restaurant we were quite disappointed by what could be called nothing other than very mediocre Italian food. One thing is for sure at these prices there is no excuse for what we received. I know Jolly Green Giant frozen mixed vegetables when I see and taste them and they have no place in a pasta dish! At least not with the label: mixed seasonal vegetables! Won't be going again. The service was notable, though. The atmosphere: Homey.

Snobby Staff, Good Food, Good Wine
Submitted Saturday, December 22, 2007 - 9:18pm [Dine in]

Our first visit to West, and we were impressed. Well, with the food and wine at least. I don't mean to say that the service was all bad, but it just takes one small incident to sour things, like a server (who is not assigned to your table) blatantly ignoring your request for water while looking right at you! I really despise that kind of attitude in waiting staff. I mean really, if your only devoted to the table providing you with tips then at least have the courtesy of saying: I'll get your waiter for you! I felt like I had called someone off the street to serve me.

The food on the other hand was something special, albeit in small portions. The thing is, had the portions been any bigger I probably would not have been able to eat everything. The food in general is quite rich and not the type of fare you would want to eat daily. Okay, just a bit bigger would have been appreciated at such high prices. The dessert was really the only dissapointment. It was tiny and lacking in pizzaz.

Atmosphere? Nothing special, other than the wine rack with the library style ladder the place seemed very dated. Particularily the ceiling! Not impressed... Oh the wine was fantastic, and OUR waiter, very knowledgeable.
