At least they tried...
Submitted Friday, August 26, 2005 - 5:04pm [Dine in]

Though they try to give the dishes a good presentation, the taste is not all there. The carpetting and corners need more attention in cleaning... Wouldn't be going back. Been there for a handful of visits in what felt like a couple of years back.

Delicious desserts.

The desserts are delicious! A great port list, too. Plenty of alcohol to serve your after dinner needs. Service is impeccable, not at all pretentious.

Not worth the price tag.
Submitted Friday, August 26, 2005 - 4:58pm [Dine in]

For dimsum, everything's fine. Standard. Nothing exceptional, and nothing that's bad to speak of. For dinner, some items get charged for way more than its worth in portion and in flavour. Though for the most part, the flavour isn't lacking in the dishes, but neither does anything really stand out. This is a good thing then at least you get a decent meal, consistent, as long as you are reassured of the quality and freshness of the ingredients. However, it's not worth the inflated rates that you're better off paying at a better Chinese seafood restaurant than this. Go to Kirin or Fisherman's Terrace or Shiang Garden for better and similar to less in cost for both dimsum brunches and seafood, yes, king crab included, dinners.

Overpriced for what you get.

I wasn't impressed. Though the ika karaage was good, everything else was standard. Too bad the prices felt above standard for the fare.

Love the homous.
Submitted Friday, August 26, 2005 - 4:50pm [Dine in]

The homous, chickpea dip, delicious! After a number of takeouts though, it gets to be a bit too greasy for comfort. So I've stopped eating it altogether. Will try again some day. Hopefully, it will be just as good as I remembered or even better! Eat-in, the calamari was a bit too salted. Nothing exceptional.

Great fries, too bad nothing else was.
Submitted Friday, August 26, 2005 - 4:46pm [Dine in]

I agree. The fries were delicious! Everything else was just standard. The service is indifferent. Not returning there until it gets sold and gets renamed!

Excellent food; indifferent service.

Delicious salad bar! Worth every penny! You don't even need to hit the meats! Too bad their very much worth it pack-your-own-styrofoam salad bar lunch to-go deal is no longer. Haven't gotten a chance to try that cheap deal. Just ate in each time! With nothing to-go! Live music nights--loud and busy, as it should be. Nice decor. Plenty of beers.

Great tapas, even greater prices!

Just can't compare to Guu on Thurlow! Though bigger (seats more here). Different menu in the different Guu locations. Roasted garlic topping every dish, yummmmy!

Trendy, and fun. Hang out and chat. Meet up with friends before/after hitting a night club. Fun place, live DJ'ing. Always busy enough.

Fun, lively place for the family.

Good portions, great prices. Slow service. Slow in taking the orders, and even slower in preparing it and bringing to your table. Love the decor. Friendly waitresses/waiters. Great for large parties. Plenty of room to accomodate. Parking is a pain; best to pay for valet. Would definitely return, but never when I'm hungry or expecting to be soon. :)

Used to be excellent!
Submitted Friday, August 26, 2005 - 4:19pm [Dine in]

Now it's just sub par. In the last couple of years, the food has really gone down. Way down. It doesn't seem to be as busy as it used to be when I visited at least. Never going back, but was sad to lose this place as one of my favourite dining spots for fish and creme brulee.... None of it is any good anymore. And are more often than not overcooked, and not at all tasty like it used to be.

Delicious viet sandwiches/subs.
Submitted Friday, August 26, 2005 - 4:12pm [Dine in]

It truly is juicy and delicious. And so they end up selling out daily around noon to early afternoon. Though after a while, it feels a little anemic. Just isn't enough content! Need more more more! Can't just say I'll eat a 2nd sub... that's just way too much bread in my belly at that point. As for the noodles, it isn't great. Isn't even *cough* any *cough* good.

Great food & strong alcohol!
Submitted Friday, August 26, 2005 - 4:09pm [Dine in]

I like the atmosphere, though the inside seems to seat fewer than the outside/street/patio-for-chainsmokers. The food was well prepared, delicious fish! The service was friendly. The art on the walls were beautiful and are by independant artists putting it up to sell. It's a nice place to sit and chat and dine. =)

Great variety for all-you-can-eat bbq + sushi (or bbq+hotpot). Always busy, always fresh, always friendly! Call-in for reservations! Avoid the walk-in line-ups! Be punctual or arrive a little early!

Just don't ever ever visit the Burrard downtown location. God awful in service and food.

Best location! Beautiful restrooms!
Submitted Friday, August 26, 2005 - 3:53pm [Dine in]

I'm a sucker for clean, sanitary spacious bathrooms. Couch-and-all, though not necessary, is a nice addition. Toilet seat covering should be made mandatory everywhere else! The service is friendly. The food is always great. The drinks are always tasty. And they're often fairly busy. This is by far my most favourite Cactus location... it used to be the Broadway & Granville one. But that's a little more noisy and less cozy comfy in comparison.

Disappointing...
Submitted Friday, August 26, 2005 - 3:45pm [Dine in]

The menu looked appetizing--if only I can be full just reading off of it, but alas, it's usually the opposite that happens. The food was beautifully presented and fresh. However, they were either bland or more bland. Service was friendly. They do tend to fill up quick. Nice decor. You're better off going to Guu or other places for a tastier more satisfying meal. And for much much less $$, as well.

Overhyped. Slow.
Submitted Friday, August 26, 2005 - 3:41pm [Dine in]

Slow, indifferent staff. Food is sub par. Overhyped. Though it still seems to get enough business to stay busy. Nice decor. That's all that's nice about it... well, the hrs, too.

Pink Pearl1132 East Hastings Street, Vancouver
Somehow ends up being pricier than it ought to be.
Submitted Friday, August 26, 2005 - 3:38pm [Dine in]

I've obviously had dimsum and dinner at more pricier places. But somehow Pink Pearl always seems to end up seemingly more pricey for what you get than from the other places, say, the nicer newer restaurants in Richmond. Sure enough, this is located in a rather shady neighbourhood. But it's still good to visit on occassion when you want your dim sum carted around to you the good old fashioned way. The food is decent. Actually, it may be amongst the best in its class of tradition cart-arounds. But I'll keep to frequenting those order-off-the-menu-served fresh places myself.

Used to be great...
Submitted Friday, August 26, 2005 - 3:26pm [Dine in]

The line-ups were fun. Especially when they allowed for reservations for parties of 5+ in the past. The food used to have no room for complaint. But after the Nth visit, somehow everything started becoming over salted. It happened in more than one occassion, so being consistently so, I've stopped going there completely.

Pricey but tasty! Would be perfect for Yaletown pricing
Submitted Friday, August 26, 2005 - 3:23pm [Dine in]

It is indeed on the pricey end. Very much so. However, I'd go back in a heartbeat... already have for several such heartbeats. The variety of dishes is superb! Can't go back enough to try them all! Problem is, each time, it IS definitely SLOW. I suppose it does take time for the chef to cook every dish to perfection and to lay it out in a beautiful presentation. It wouldn't do to hire a sub par student/assistent, I guess. The server usually is very aware on the slowless of the preparations, so he does take the extra measure to ensure your comfort and that you don't starve! He offered up to each of us a chawan mushi on the house! That was enough to tide me over until our first order arrived. Although, because of the high prices, I end up not frequenting there as much as I would have liked as I tend to eat out for every dinner 29 days a month.
