Nothing Real Great Here ??
Submitted Wednesday, July 10, 2013 - 3:01pm [Dine in]

Well, was walking by and thought what the heck, lets try one of there burgers.

I should have known, small burger, lots of bun .... thats about it for me...

I like the other way around: more burger then bun, with a soft bun, cheddar cheese dripping out, nice fried onions and a gluten free option would be great

Deep fried Cauliflower ??
Submitted Sunday, June 30, 2013 - 7:11am [Dine in]

Whats so great about this signture dish Najib's special -- deep fried cauliflower with some lemon and salt?

I was expecting a lot more, maybe a dip with cilantro smoked, lime, hummus !!

Some of their other dishes are pretty good though, just not this "Signature Dish"

Wraps are pretty plain, go for something else

New Chef From INDIA HE IS GREAT !!
Submitted Saturday, June 15, 2013 - 8:33pm [Dine in]

I went in and had the buffet today for lunch and after a few bites knew that it was a lot different then the last time

The chana masala, a spinach/potato dish, vegetable biryani, butter chicken, beef curry, onion balls were great

AND THEIR NAAN IS WONDERFUL I must have ate at 100 indian restaurants worldwide and its very well textured, not chewy - crisp and fluffy about best describes it

$10 is good value

Beautiful Restaurant but POOR FOOD
Submitted Sunday, April 21, 2013 - 3:21pm [Dine in]

Its too bad, I ate at Maurya about 3 years ago and it was not the greatest and then had their lunch buffet a couple weeks ago and think it went down hill even further.

Hello people from Mauya: go to VJ's Rangoli to see how your suppose to make great food, and go to RAGA just a few blocks down from you on Broadway to see how to make amazing parantha's and palak paneer, shahi paneer

There is a new restaurant is not bad: Dhroom on Fraser, kind of far out from downtown but worth it, order from the menu only.

HIT and MISS, Usually MISS
Submitted Friday, April 19, 2013 - 3:45am [Dine in]

What can I say, had tenderloin steak that was undercooked from how I wanted it - medium, and it had a weird taste, and ordered lobster on the side... I think the lobster must have sat in a lot of chlorine water prior to cooking because literally within 3 minutes my bottom lip swelled up from some kind of reaction

I ordered vegetables on the side, where were they??? all mushrooms almost

Its a nice atmosphere, to bad they can supervise and train their cooks, because cooking these basic meals is so easy

Potatoes were starchy
Submitted Thursday, March 28, 2013 - 2:29pm [Dine in]

Popped in for a quick poutine, not enough cheese and right away it seems the potatoes had a lot of starch, the gravy really never packed enough of a punch

If your drinking heavily late at night probably ok to stop by, try some of the others besides Traditional

My Roast Lamb Failed....
Submitted Monday, March 25, 2013 - 8:02am [Take-out]

I ordered roast lamb to go, and asked for vegetables only - no rice, salad or bread, so get this, I thought if I didnt order rice, bread or salad he would naturally give me more vegetables, but NO just the usual portion

And the lamb was not nicely marinated nor did it have a nice outer crust, and was not tender fall off the bone

It was quite fatty also

Last time for me at Stephos....

Was not the Greatest
Submitted Sunday, March 17, 2013 - 9:59am [Dine in]

Well, I had high hopes here, heard a lot about the place

Hard rice not cooked enough, potato fritters or whatever they were called are very greasy and paper thin piece of potato in the middle of lots of batter... avoid these like the plague

Salad was a bunch of under-ripe, hard veggies

Chicken not a whole lot of flavour

Kids running around making a lot of noise

I'll pass

WOW What a Flop
Submitted Sunday, March 17, 2013 - 8:31am [Dine in]

I heard this place was not the greatest food so had to check it out for myself

This is exactly my experience:

Walked in the door, no body opened it for me -- it was raining and quite windy outside .. I made the effort to come to their restaurant you think someone could have opened that big door which the wind was trying to shut as I was trying to open.
There was no hostess to great me, I thought Italian was all about the "Family"

We got seated fairly quick because it was a Tuesday and 1/2 the restaurant was empty at 7PM
Sat there for about 10 minutes, no bread !!! Where the hell is the bread, where is my water.
I had to wave the waiter to come over for us to order, I ordered spaghetti and meatballs and side of grilled greens.
The food came in about 17 minutes, still no fresh baked bread, olive oil, balsamic....which is a staple in Italy -- was I suppose to order this and pay extra ???
Got my main course: meatballs looked great, but first thing I noticed is not much tomato sauce, I bit into one, WOW was it spicy, never had one this spicy before, didnt like it and the texture was abnormal it was fine ground meat. Tried my greens dish, never had much flavour and was 1/2 potato wedges??? huh

Also, the waiter took my umbrella and put it where other umbrellas are located, there much have been 20 of them... where was mine ??? I had to sort through them, about 4 looked the same, I grabbed the wrong one, then had to head back and look again till found my umbrella, while they were looking at me like I was trying to take an extra umbrella....... why didnt a hostess or waiter bring my umbrella ??

There you have it, never going back, Don Francescos much better a few blocks away if you want good food and to be greeted properly, fine wine selection

Had much better poutine other places
Submitted Friday, February 8, 2013 - 6:27pm [Dine in]

Well, I finally had to give good old Frenches a try, you walk by their restaurant and signs all over the place, POUTINE POUTINE POUTINE

This is my take: some fries the middle was uncooked and fries had bits and pieces which were overcooked, the gravy was just ok - never had a nice dark beefy taste like some other places in town, and the curds were hard -- I prefer somewhat melted. I ordered the small classic and for $7.50 there was not much there.

The Brownstone on Main Street a new restaurant in town blows Frenchies out of the ball park - their beef brisket poutine is outstanding, same with Crave on Main Street and Oakwood on Broadway (2741).

I tried Brados also on Commercial drive -- what a joke, horrible - frozen fries and tasteless vegetarian gravy, mozzarella cheese

Was hoping it would be a lot better
Submitted Monday, January 21, 2013 - 3:35pm [Dine in]

I've heard so much about this restaurant, tried a few dishes, nothing special

The noodles - wheat flour and water, salt and maybe some eggs -- what is so amazing about that ??

A lot of people, cant move around and loud. Kirin just a few blocks away above City Square Mall is way better, a bit more pricey, but get what you pay for.

Could be much better
Submitted Tuesday, December 25, 2012 - 10:46am [Dine in]

I have been here about 4 times for the buffet because it is quick and on the way home, but everytime Im done think to myself what little it would cost for them to seriously improve the buffet:

First: peel the carrots you use in the cauliflower curry dish, its not very appetizing, or better yet for an extra $3 a day buy some higher quality carrots - I can tell you use the lowest quality carrots available.
Second: your dahl is very watery, also: do you soak the beans overnight in water before making the dahl to get rid of the anti-nutrients?? your always suppose to soak lentils at least 8 hours before cooking. It would also be great if you had 2 types of dahl - it is so cheap to make -- have a yellow lentil with zucchini and a bit of spinach, cilantro, fresh ginger --- and not so much water.
Third: change the oil you use to deep fry samosas more often, I can tell you use this oil for weeks, it is not very appetizing -- and put some more vegetables in the samosas - a few diced carrots, spinach or green bean, cauliflower would be great -- not just so much potatoe
Fourth: make palak paneer -- a few years ago you always had saag - now you dont, it is very cheap. Your version was kind of watery, go to RAGA and have their saag if you want to know what a good saag tastes like -- how expensive is it to make spinach ??
Fifth: also have some roti's - whole wheat would be nice
Six: sometimes your rice is kind of hard, make sure it is cooked enough, make sure the rice is also soaked overnight to get rid of the phytic acid - makes it healthier. Read on the internet about this

If you make these simple changes that dont cost very much will improve your image and will probably get more customers, better yet get a new buffet cart and add 4-5 new dishes -- be the best in town and people will come, believe me. Everyone that I know wants a good indian buffet, people are busy nowadays want to grab some food quick, a buffet that is healthy is what people want.

There is a buffet at All India Sweets a few doors down, but is too spicy... and rice is always hard undercooked. A couple of their dishes are watery.... what can I say ??

Submitted Monday, July 23, 2012 - 4:54pm [Dine in]

I think will go to safeway, buy a pack of cheemos perogies, fry up some onion, mushroom and bacon and this would be 5X better then whatever they are serving here. Not even close to how my grandma used to make them, with a nice thin dough, bacon, cheese+potatoe+onion
