Disappointed!! What a waste!
Submitted Friday, April 13, 2012 - 1:11am [Dine in]

This restaurant has been highly hyped in the media, so we were expecting to have a great lunch here. We were disappointed on so many fronts. The portions were embarrassingly minuscule, especially for the prices charged! This could be excused if we were blown away by the excellence of the food preparation, quality of ingredients, attention to detail and presentation. I had salmon fish and chips ($16). The batter on the 2 very small pieces of fish was oily. The small salad was brown. The chips were 1. tasteless 2. overdone. My friend's grilled cheese sandwich was garnished(?) with a thin!! sliver of picked cucumber and a piece of brown paper. Again, for $10, it was embarrassingly lacking in any wow! factor. The soup of the day ($12) was chorizo but seemed to be a thin broth with a few slices of sausage and some green stuff. The restaurant was mostly empty, and I wish we had chosen someplace else. There are so many wonderful places to eat and I wonder why so many of the ones that are so poor to indifferent get such overwhelmingly positive p.r. when so many gems get ignored.

Fantastic bistro food
Submitted Thursday, June 2, 2011 - 7:38pm [Dine in]

We use to go here when it was Voya and were interested in what they would do with the restaurant. I understand the chef is the same. It's a nice upscale bistro. The food is outstanding. I'm still raving about the seared tuna!! The service is good. Water attended to. Waiter pours your wine. The waiter answers all your silly questions about the food and help you understand the menu. They leave you alone to enjoy your meal. The only caveat is that the area we were seated at was noisy. Which on a Sat night is understandable. The menu pricing was reasonable, which will make me want to come back more often and check out the rest of the menu!

"Best Vietnamese"??
Submitted Thursday, June 2, 2011 - 7:26pm [Dine in]

I wanted some pho and this place had won "best Vietnamese" in Georgia Straight so thought would try it out. Big mistake!! The place was filthy. The table was sticky even after wiping. I overheard another patron ask to have their table cleaned again - twice! The food was mediocre. The broth tasted of MSG, which is a cheat in a good restaurant. The chicken ditto. Very disappointed. Don't understand how this place is busy when there are much better places. Don't encourage bad food... This is Vancouver and there are so many more choices!

Not worth the lineup

This place use to have a nice vibe. Sunshine, water, and a very nice al fresco lunch! Over the years, with expanding popularity, the joint has not kept up, to the extent that now you queue up for over an hour on a sunny day to get mediocre fried fish with over done fries ($12 for halibut). The spot prawns ($14), which I remembered from past years was not very tasty, the sauce being very bland and tasteless, the bun served with it ordinary and stale! This is not a cheap lunch, and when it is not a good lunch, why bother? Would it be better if they had more staff? Probably. But I wonder at the credentials of restaurant management that is content with a very mediocre to bad example of their brand. How could they let it get to this point?

Used to be good
Submitted Sunday, May 1, 2011 - 12:56pm [Dine in]

I've come here off and on since they first opened and they use to be very interesting. One recognizes these are students and give them suitable leeway and in the beginning the restaurant was very good. Over the past years I feel the level of instruction/ supervision has deteriorated and consequently the quality of the food in the restaurant has gone down. I use to enjoy coming here but not any longer. I use to buy the cakes in the bakery, but these have also gone down in quality and in my last visit, were rather pitiful. It's a shame as I wonder if this reflects the level of instruction for the students and I know they pay a lot of money for these courses.

Dine out Thumbs Up
Submitted Monday, January 24, 2011 - 4:47pm [Dine in]

Went to Nu to preview the Dine out menu. Was very happily surprised. Expected the food and service to be good but was blown away by our experience. Rob Clarke cooked that night!! Our choices of appies were great, but totally unexpected were the large portions! I could feed teenagers on this. My choice of main - seared tuna was incredible. I don't know if I've ever had tuna that good before. I suspect not. Plus their markups on wine is more reasonable than many other places. I'm begging to go again!

poor start to dine out
Submitted Monday, January 24, 2011 - 4:35pm [Dine in]

Checked out their Dine out preview. Very disappointed. Food mediocre at best. Large servings but when the taste/flavour isn't there, why bother? We came early but ambience was painfully loud, service was non-existant, and had to remind servers rushing past that we were ready for next course. And by the way, why did my soup look different from my neighbour's? Were there ingredients missing? Mine tasted like pan drippings and not soup! But maybe it was suppose to.

Always a favourite

We use to come here quite often, but with so many other excellent choices in Vancouver, it fell off our radar. Imagine our surprise when the waiter remembered us! Always have a good time here. Food is excellent, wait staff very competent and professional but not stuffy at all. We like their 3 course prix fix which changes monthly, and on Sundays, wines by the bottle are half price!

disappointing
Submitted Friday, November 5, 2010 - 10:13am [Dine in]

Three of us went for the early bird half price deal. Unfortunately, even for half price, it was a disappointment. My prime rib tasted as if it were steamed, another diner's halibut was overcooked, even after requesting it to be cooked medium. The vegetables and the service were perfunctory. The dessert buffet was better than before. In the Fairmont Vancouver, you expect better. There's so many other better places, why waste your time?

going downhill
Submitted Friday, November 6, 2009 - 10:21am [Dine in]

We have been regular patrons over the years and am now seeing the Cannery go downhill. I suspect some of the service and kitchen staff have found other jobs but still, in a restaurant of this calibur, it should still maintain it's reputation somewhat. The most disappointing item was the lobster benedict, which for $24 should be extravagant. Unfortunately it was small bits of lobster served with small amounts of sauce, overcooked (deepfried?) ranch fries, overtop an English(??) muffin that was doughy rather than crispy. The fruit cup(?) was half a strawberry, a thin slice of pineapple and kiwi and a tiny wedge of orange. Overall a disappointing brunch. Better to keep the good memories that make some new bad ones!

a taste of yaletown chintzy
Submitted Friday, October 20, 2006 - 11:50am [Dine in]

Great expectations, wonderful flavours in appetizers and entrees, but portions much too small. We were still hungry when we left restaurant, with an unfortunate aftertaste of being had. We know that for these $35 menus, there must be some accomadation, but here I feel the restaurant packs in the customer, encourages a high turnover and cuts down the portions. A good experience at these promotions encourages customers to come back. Unfortunately our group of four will not be doing that, nor recommending it to our friends. P.S. We came because one of our group had a fantastic time last year.
