Good food here
Submitted Monday, May 16, 2011 - 5:50pm [Dine in]

The food is tasty and comes out hot. Everything is freshly cooked and they do a really good job on their vermicelli dishes. This place used to be called the Louie Garden until new owners took it over. The menu is mainly fast food type dishes. They give you a free coffee or Chinese drink with your order.

They have a noodsle soup that comes with two toppings, very nice!

The restaurant is quite busy most days.

It's an overall winner!
Submitted Monday, May 16, 2011 - 5:46pm [Dine in]

They have added two new dishes, spicy ramen soup and spicy udon noodle soup. Both are winners. The bbq salmon belly and salmon neck are very delicious. Overall this is a great place to go. The food is high quality and the price is very reasonable. If it's busy the service tends to be a little slow as the server can get overwhelmed. But in these times of scarce money this is the place to go for casual but delicious food.

40 person birthday party in January
Submitted Thursday, February 24, 2011 - 10:57pm [Dine in]

It was excellent. Good food and the service was even better.
I've been to lots of places and been sorely disappointed. This party was a total winner. Nothing is cheap these days but if you're going to have a special party this is a great place to do it.

No. 1 Beef Noodle House4741 Willingdon Avenue, Burnaby
I won't go back....
Submitted Sunday, August 2, 2009 - 6:09pm [Dine in]

The food was way too salty. We had the pork and pickled cabbage hot pot plus an order of the beef soup.
The beef soup was so spicy hot that neither of us could eat it. And salty?
I don't think it's that healthy. Even the steamed vegetables that came with the hotpot had msg.

It was overkill as far as the salt went.
The service wasn't that great. Maybe we caught them on a break or something, but I will definitely pass in the future. They were pretty busy though. But for my taste, I prefer much less msg.

Isami Sushi4603 Kingsway, #6, Burnaby
One of my favourite Japanese restaurants
Submitted Monday, January 26, 2009 - 8:54pm [Dine in]

They do not serve farmed salmon. It is owned and operated by Japanese people with lots of experience. The food is excellent. Besides sushi they also have bbq salmon jaw, smelt, squid, etc, fabulous.

The price is quite reasonable as well. Sometimes the service is a little slow, but if you're sitting at the sushi bar, Sam will make sure the servers are on top of things.

All around it's very good value.

Cannery Seafood House, The2205 Commissioner Street, Vancouver
Severely overpriced
Submitted Sunday, January 25, 2009 - 10:48pm [Dine in]

I don't know why I keep going back to the Cannery. Now I remember, I like the ambience. You sit right on the water in rustic surroundings and dim lights. It's very relaxing.

But the food is something to be desired. It seems everything is cooked in butter. I like butter, but that's it, there's nothing innovative about it. There's really nothing special about the food at all. It's just soaked in butter.

Everybody raves about the lobster oil and balsamic vinegar. Unfortunately it give some people stomach aches.

I do not recommend this restaurant if you want excellent seafood. For 4 of us the bill was just under $400 including the tip. A total waste of money.

It's a filthy pig stye with bad service
Submitted Sunday, January 25, 2009 - 10:35pm [Dine in]

Yes, the food is pretty good. I like the BBQ meats. Also, the kitchen puts out a very good bitter melon and beef in black bean sauce.
But the service can be downright hostile at times. I realize that they don't make the most doing that job, but the waitresses are pretty miserable.
And as for the cleanliness, there is crud on the baseboards from 10 years ago. The bathrooms are a disgrace. They stink and the plumbing leaks.
I'd still go there, but there are better places around.

Kam Gok Yuen142 E Pender Street, Vancouver
The best value in the City
Submitted Sunday, January 25, 2009 - 12:53pm [Dine in]

I like this restaurant but let me start by saying that the service is a little grouchy.

The food is excellent. It's mainly simple fare, bbq meats are excellent. Anything from the kitchen is very good including bitter melon and beef on rice.
The best thing in the restaurant is the "house soup". Anyone of Chinese heritage will understand what I'm saying here, about the soup.

In my opinion all these other expensive "shiee-shee" restaurants are all show and no go. I always feel like I got f&cked when I go to expensive restaurants where the bill is $200 for two people. The food is usually mediocre at best and the service poor.

However, I could eat at the Kam Gok Yuen everyday and be very happy. Dollar for dollar it's the best value in town. Two people can be very happily full for $25 including tip.

Happy Valley Seafood Restaurant3432 Lougheed Highway, Vancouver
Bad service for groups 10+
Submitted Sunday, January 25, 2009 - 12:36pm [Dine in]

Not recommended for more than table of 10
Happy Valley Seafood Restaurant 3432 Lougheed Hwy in Vancouver. The people who run it used to run the Pink Pearl Restaurant in Vancouver.

The food is good but the staff cannot handle big parties. The management is not up to par and they have not properly trained the staff.

For instance, they didn't have their bar stocked with scotch. Nor did they have any tonic, but I suppose that didn't matter because the waiter didn't know a gin and tonic was. He brought gin and water instead.

I would dissuade anyone who wanted to throw a party of more than 10 people as they don't have a clue about service.

Also, as the dishes came out, the timing was wrong. There were gaps and delays, and then 4 dishes would come out at once.

The best place so far is the Sun Sui Wah on Main Street. There is no comparison.
