underwhelmed
Submitted Wednesday, August 25, 2010 - 9:08pm [Dine in]

Right when we walked in there was a sign telling us to seat ourselves. The lounge area is nice, but my friend and I thought we'd sit in the pub area only because there were less people there. Right away I noticed some sort of dewy smell, but it wasn't so overwhelming that we needed to move. The server came promplty with menus. We ended ended up ordering their steak and prawn special ($12), ceveche with fresh tortilla chips (home-made) ($12), apple smoked cheddar salad ($9), and fries ($5). The overall taste of everything was sorta bland except for the prawns that came with my steak. I asked for a rare steak and they gave me a bit over medium. Nothing wowed me. I will not be back.

Great Taste & Great Portion
Submitted Monday, July 14, 2008 - 11:26pm [Dine in]

I love this restaurant. I've been here many times and everytime the food tastes fantastic and you get a very generous portion of the dish. I usually get a combo meal that comes with soup, few dishes, rice, and desert, and free crab! The soup is the typical chinese broth so not much to say about that. If you aren't familiar with the vast variety of different dishes the waitress will be glad to recommend something. Although the basic sweet and sour pork and fried rice are yummy, I urge you to try something you normally wouldn't get because you will be surprized by every dish you get. You will not leave with your stomach unsatisfied. The decor is not fancy but the food makes up for it.

If you are looking for little fuss, and great food at a great price than this is the place to go for chinese food. Bring a big group so you can order more variety.

Recommendations:
-Sweet and sour beef ( I think it's better than the S&S pork)
-birds nest (made of fried yam) bowl with many kinds of vegetables and squid or shrimp
-perserved vegetables with shreaded beef (spicy)
-spicy garlic prawns (great deal for the amount you get (a plate full): not 6 for $8 like the western restaurants)
-their baked tapioka desert with pinapple bun like crust. Only comes in a full size pie.

This place isn't inside granville island but just outside the entrance at the Waterfall Building. Worth the 5 min walk. I have been here several times and everytime I am greated with a friendly smile. They use wild salmon which tastes so much better than the regular salmon. Their portions are generous for the price. They have a mango salmon role which is to die for. I also recommend their philidelpia role if you like cream cheese. The only thing that's missing is a more Japanese feel to the restaurant. It's tough though when the building is constructed of concrete, but they tried their best to make it feel homely.

Better going to Coquitlam
Submitted Monday, July 14, 2008 - 11:04pm [Dine in]

I was at the Coquitlam location just over a year ago and thought that the one in burnaby will be just as great. Was I wrong.
We were seated outside on the patio and my friend odered a sangria. There were flies everywhere and some of them ended up in my friends drink. The waitress promplty replaced it with a new one at no extra charge. I give them credit for that. There was a new waitress there who did not seem to know what she was doing. All she did was grab us our drinks and we didn't see her for the rest of the night. I ordered a risotto. It was good. The other 3 people ordered variations of salads. 2 had too much dressing, and the tomato for another salad was not ripe enough. Maybe the pasta is better? Our designated waitress was nice enough. She did check up on us a few times during our meal, but we had to flag her down to get the bill and that took about 10 mins to get. Food was decent. Wasn't anything special. I was disappointed overall and would not go back unless I know that some changes have been made. In the mean time I recommend heading over to the Coquitlam location.

Late Night?
Submitted Thursday, May 1, 2008 - 1:41pm [Dine in]

I went on a Tuesday night and arrived at 9:45pm for late night AYCE. Once I arrived the waitress informed us that last call will be at 10pm. I asked them what time late night started...9:30pm. Already, i knew that this was going to be a bad experience b/c who has late night sushi but only allows a half and hour window to order??? On the way to our table we noticed several tables that were empty and not cleared. We were seated and basically had one shot to order what we wanted.

Some of the food came immediately, but less than what we ordered. We ordered 18 pieces of salmon sushi and only 8 pieces came. Someone from my party has been here before so knew what the portions were and many dishes were reduced in quantity from what we ordered. They were closing in 20 mins and I noticed that the sushi chefs were starting to clean up. But, we were still missing about 16 pieces of sushi and 2 japanese pizzas. We asked a waitress about our missing food and she came back a moment later and said that they were sold out of the items. How can a sushi restaurant be sold out of salmon?!? She only said that b/c the sushi bar and kitchen was cleaned up for the day.

The food overall was decent and they do have some unique items on their menu for AYCE that other places don't have, but beware of late night. Arrive early and make sure you keep track of what you ordered and what they bring you...you may be shorted.

In the end, after some discussion with the waitress, they comped us the bill for 2 people.

Also, stay away from anything made from beef.
