Fine but not great
Submitted Saturday, November 17, 2007 - 10:58am [Dine in]

We ate here this last Friday, and it was quite busy. Food arrived in reasonable time, although there was some waiting. The room is quite nice- although it's funny these days - restaurants seem too be getting simpler and simpler decor. Here there isn't even any artwork on the walls here, and my wife say the bathroom looked like prison cell, with all the concrete and just a sink hanging on the wall. Sometimes I wonder if the "emperor has no clothes", the way these trends take over. Back to the food, The best thing by far was my steak, specially aged beef, perfectly cooked, with a lovely bearnaise. Not sure about the frites that came with - they were thick-cut and served in a heap in a small bowl. I think they could have been crisper and more imaginatively presented. And how about a dip- something gourmet with the watercress? Hell it's a $34 entree. The collar beef my wife had was too stringy for our taste. Nice chocolate terrine for dessert. The vegetarian that came with us left hungry - the portions are quite small for the risotto and salad. The food was fine but not out of this world.

Decent Pizza and Lasagna
Submitted Wednesday, August 29, 2007 - 12:43pm [Dine in]

We ate here with a group of 5 this last Tuesday night - it was packed as usual. A very cool Commercial Drive experience for out-of-towners... but the food took a long time. We had a ten-year-old with us who enjoyed watching the pizza being made in the wood oven shaped like a giant head. Food was not bad - the lasagna was decent, and the "Ai Due Formaggi" pizza was the best one we had that night. Service was a bit spotty, mainly because they are so busy. But on a summer night, it seems like the place to be....

Good Indian food in East Van
Submitted Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 9:23pm [Dine in]

Our first time tonight trying this restaurant - we were sad to see Rubina leave the neighbourhood. Chicken samosas were excellent, light pastry, good texture, nicely spiced. The mango lassis were great. The garlic Naan was outstanding, a thing of beauty, all browned and dotted with seasonings - better than Rubina's! We had two dishes - the Butter Chicken and the Shahi Paneer. Good textures and flavours, but they both seemed a little sweet. Could be just our taste. Great dipping the naan in there though! It looks like a very competent kitchen with a full menu, and there is a special list of "Indian Chinese dishes". Prices were reasonable. We'll go back and try something else. Recommended.

Great Dim Sum on East Side!
Submitted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 10:57am [Dine in]

We ate Dim Sum recently and found the food to be quite lovely. It is an "order-off-the-menu" place, but we found the service excellent. The siu mai was very tender, a mark of fresh dim sum. We love lo bok go, which is fried turnip paste squares, and their's were done as little deep-fried cubes, with bean sprouts and green onion. Different, but the best we've had anywhere. Even the lotus leaf wrapped sticky rice was great, with seafood at the center instead of chicken. Recommended- bring lots of friends so you can try more dishes!
