We dined here before catching a show across the street at the Orpheum. Arrived at 5:45, and informed our server that we had to be out by 8pm.
My table mates ordered from the set menu, and their starters arrived at 7:15 (we ordered at 6:00!) An hour and 15 minutes for the starters? The main course arrived at 7:40, at which point we had to shovel the food into our mouth so as not to be late for the show. We had to cancel our dessert because there was simply no time.
The manager blamed the chef, and did not even offer an apology. I thought the manager's job was to be the team leader and take responsibility for his team?
It was the most bizarre experience I've ever had in a restaurant. Although the location is convenient next to the Orpheum, I don't think I would come back.
Went for drinks and appies late afternoon.
Our server was exceptional - she was very efficient and attentive without being too "in your face"
The only issue I had was with the olive tapenade in the baked cheese appy - there was a ground up pit which could have knocked a tooth out, but other than that, everything else was fantastic.
I would definitely recommend this location for a night out.
I really can't understand some of the positive food reviews here. Did we eat the same dishes???
The only positives that I can offer is that the place was clean and we actually had a friendly server unlike some of the other reviewers.
I had to give a rating of "1" for food because it was quite laughable. My kids ordered the yaki-soba and were astonished when they received spaghetti instead!!! What a joke. Is this authentically Japanese? Also, the sushi rolls are about half the size as other restaurants, but more expensive. And the taste was so just average. The sockeye salmon sashimi was ok, but again, the portion size was ridiculously small.
For the price that we paid that night, we could have had double the food at Aoki Sushi, which is actually run by Japanese chefs. Next time, I will forgo convenience and drive down to Broadway for better, authentic, and cheaper Japanese food.
We never learn... because the food is so good, we have always returned despite the bad service, but never again.
This was the 3rd time that they completely forgot to process our pick-up order. And the manager was so rude, arrogant, and unapologetic.
There are plenty of other restaurants out there who deserve our business.
We finally figured out which "tandoori" place was which... this is the one that's not right on Fraser.
Food was excellent, although portions are small relative to the prices. We had the butter chicken, eggplant bartha, lamb, naan, fish pakoras and 2 other dishes I don't remember. Next time, I won't order the pakoras, as they weren't that remarkable. I think our elderly server was surprised that we could finish all the food. Of course we ate absolutely everything, plus an order of ice cream.
We'll definitely go back.
We decided to try this place, in spite of the complaints about slow service.
We waited about 25 minutes for our food, which was ok with us.
The deep fried chicken and the chicken with special sauce were equally delicious. We also had Jap-chae noodles, which I thought was ok but hubby said it needed more sauce. Seafood pancake was also quite good.
Prices are very reasonable, and the environment is clean. Highly recommended.
We love that the owners are Japanese. This is quite rare in the city, to have sushi made my Japanese chefs.
Prices are incredibly reasonable, and although the ambience isn't that great, the place is always clean and tidy!
The sockeye sashimi is always fresh, and the rolls are delicious. Other favorites include yaki udon and ton katsu.
One of our favorites! We're always happy (and full) after an evening here.
The food is consistently great, and service is outstanding. The owner is usually there, and he personally serves all his guests.
Our favorites are Ma Po Tofu, square dumplings, and shanghai noodles. The noodles are always done "al dente"!
Haven't tried their famous sandwiches so I can't comment on these.
We had their spring rolls and lemon grass chicken on noodles. Spring rolls were delicious. Crispy on the outside, hot and chewy inside. Lemon grass chicken was a major disappointment. There was more fat than meat. I prefer the lemon grass chicken at Bon Cafe just down the street.
Service was very good. Attentive, although a little forgetful.
Next time I'll have to try the sandwiches to see what all the hoopla is about.
Not sure why some were not impressed by Nu, but I loved it. We went for dinner on a warm spring evening, and the view was just amazing. Our waitress was fantastic. Very attentive and friendly without being so "in your face".
Food was great. My table mates and I had chevre chicken wings, braised beef burgers, and poutine for appies. Main course was also fab. Table mates had pork chops and lamb. I had the seafood special which was cooked to perfection.
Dessert selection wasn't too impressive, but the cheesecake that I ordered was still yummy.
Wine was perfect, but then again, we paid for it :)
Overall fantastic experience. Would definitely go again.
We were at the mall early in the morning to visit Daiso, and noticed that there was no line up at Beard Papas. So we bought some Eclairs. They were "ok"... service was fast and friendly (no line up at 11 am weekday).
I agree with the reviewer that said the crust was too hard. Is it supposed to be this way or did my family and I get stale ones? Without sounding snotty, I can honestly say I can make better cream puffs.
If there is no lineup, try one out. But don't wait a half hour for one of these, cause you'll only end up bitter.
We love this place for lunch! Haven't been for dinner yet, although we would like to.
Our son loves the xiao long bao (sp?), daughter and I love the shanghai noodles (sauce is so yummy and the noodles are cooked to perfection), and husband loves everything. Their cripsy fried rice is a bit different than other places, because it's more tomato based. It took a bit of getting used to, but still pretty good.
We've always had good service, but we try to go when it's not too busy.
I decided to check this place out because of a recommendation by Chasiubow, whose ratings I look forward to reading.
But I was disappointed with this restaurant. Perhaps it's because I have a more "western" palate, I don't know... but the chicken did not feel like chicken in my mouth. It was a texture that I've never tasted before, a cross between chicken fat and who-knows-what. Ok, maybe it's my fault for ordering Kung Pao Chicken in a real Chinese restaurant. But it was in their chef's recommendation so I wanted to try it. Not so good... And the tofu in chili/bean paste was a big disappointment as well. I can handle spicy, but this was a different type of spicy, with a whole bunch of black pepper that left a weird aftertaste in my mouth. I've had this dish in other authentic restaurants before so I know what to look for....
But like I said, maybe my taste buds have become more westernized.
You can't judge a book by its cover, etc.... and you can't judge a cupcake by its pretty colored icing.
I gave my kids a blind taste test. Cupcakes versus Superstore. Guess what? They couldn't taste the difference!
This used to be one of our favorite restaurants, but lately we've been seeing a decline in food quality. Not sure if they got a new chef or what's going on... we went for dim sum last week and the food tasted "different". I can't really describe it - just different...
Service was super quick and efficient, but I don't think we'll be returning.
Our family decided to try this place out, after reading all the great reviews. It was well worth the visit. In fact, it was so good that we ate 4 meals in 2 days at Bon Cafe!
Hubby loved the sandwiches (I didn't care for the carrot and daikon, though), and the kids and I loved the lemon grass chicken on rice/vermicelli.
Prices are reasonable and the service is friendly.
There is someone for everyone's taste bud in this restaurant.
Kids eat the pan-fried dumplings and seafood pancake. Hubby and I have the spicy tofu soup and chap-chae noodles. The noodles aren't as good as my momma makes, but hey, it's still pretty good!
Prices and portions are reasonable, and the service is great.
I would rate it high for "convenience" (I live in the area), but the sushi, sashimi, and soups just did not impress me.
Although their salmon sashimi was made with wild salmon, it didn't look as pink or firm as other wild salmon that I've had. Also, their seaweed is tough and stringy, which makes it difficult to eat (again, better seaweed at other restaurants I've been to). And the udon soups were so bland and I found the quality of their udon noodles not as good as others.
Service was decent, but the food was not worth the price in my opinion.
