Joe's Grill2061 W 4th Ave, Vancouver
I think I have found the best burgers in town.
Submitted Wednesday, March 23, 2005 - 12:14pm [Dine in]

Tried Joe's for dinner last night, and ordered a burger to see how they faired up against some of the specialty burger joints. Move over Vera and Mary, Joe has got you beat. Great all day breakfast menu, fast friendly service, and really good food; Joe's is still one of my local kits favs for an easy, inexpensive meal.

Stepho's Greek Taverna1124 Davie St, Vancouver
Can I get more food on my plate please?
Submitted Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 1:17pm [Dine in]

Stepho’s is always good, for what it is; A small hole in the wall Greek taverna, with a really cheap menu. They have great calamari, good souvlaki, and weak service. This is a great place to go if you are hungry, as the servings are ridiculously large. They are lined up everyday for dinner, but it does move quickly. Not sure I would recommend it for a first date, as it s soooo cheap and you will be burping garlic all night.

Not as good as....
Submitted Monday, March 7, 2005 - 11:42am [Dine in]

The Keg Caesars is most definitely not as good as the Thurlow location. I had lunch here the other day and was not impressed. The soup was bland, the beef melty thing that was on special was tasty, but mediocre, and the service was, well, ok. They seem to do allot of covers at lunch because of their location, but I think its a spot best saved for casual dinner outings.

I like having a woman hold the door for me

I had a great meal here last night. I would say they definitely have it together at Cactus Club, from first entrance, to the kind "thank you" when you leave. The food is always fresh, well prepared, and consistently tasty. The service is friendly, polite, and has good knowledge of menu items. The decor inside is stylish and clean and they may very well have the coolest bathrooms in all of Vancouver. The Cactus Club is great casual spot for lunch or dinner anytime.

Hamburger Mary's Diner1202 Davie Street, Vancouver
Hmmm frozen patties eh?
Submitted Monday, February 28, 2005 - 11:24am [Dine in]

So I was craving a good burger on Saturday night, and decided to try Hamburger Mary’s on Davie St. I had heard many a great burger stories from this place, so it was time to see for myself.

We both had burgers (obviously), and they were good, not great, but good. I was very surprised to be served a frozen patty in a specialty burger joint (even Vera makes her own patties), I guess I was anticipating something better. You can have a good burger almost anywhere, but at a "burger place" I would expect something a little more creative.

My date had one of their gigantic milkshake (not so gigantic), that was served overflowing all over the table (total mess), and quite honestly not very tasty.

All in the bill was only $28 for 2, so very reasonably priced.

I might go back because it was tasty, and the onion rings were great, but with lowered expectations.

Saucy McSauce
Submitted Friday, February 18, 2005 - 2:19pm [Dine in]

This place has really gone downhill with regards to food taste and quality. The menu is fun to read, and gets you excited about all the good things it has to offer, but when it hits your mouth, meh.

The restaurant itself is beautiful, and is better suited to a Hy’s or a fancy steak house. Service was prompt and friendly, and met expectations.

I had Mamas trio. Too much sauce covers mediocre ingredients. The calamari appetizer was greasy, limp, and lacking in flavor. This will make two, bad, or not so great meals in a row from old Mama Romano. Not sure I will sit through a third.

Good prime rib, and a great deal at $13.95. Great selection of single malts for a small neighborhood pub. They have daily roast special, they I may go back for.

Stick with the sirloin
Submitted Monday, February 14, 2005 - 2:39pm [Dine in]

I think you are best to go with the sirloin classic dinner at the Keg, it comes with a huge pre entrée caesar salad for around $20. I also agree with thecritic, the sirloin oscar is wicked tasty. The prime rib has been hit and miss lately, but usually very flavorful. I must say though, I prefer the Thurlow location over GI. Oh ya, and slap the leftover steak in one of those sourdough loaves and wrap it up; Ideal for the late night slam.

Great spot for before a movie. Cheap, fast, and tasty. The sushi is good, not great. Good lunchbox specials, and friendly service. Easy place to go if youre not sure where to go. The food is consistant and fast.

Different, funky little spot near coal harbor. The restaurant is small, with seating for maybe 50. The menu is good, but maybe a little high in price for the type of establishment. I had prawn wrapped scallops, which I would give 6 out of 10, and the nightly pasty special, a salmon and caper penne, again 6 out of 10. The service was friendly and easy on the eyes. I cool spot if you live nearby, but I wouldn’t travel to go there.

If it wasn't for the all that jazz...
Submitted Monday, February 14, 2005 - 12:34pm [Dine in]

Well, I have been here 3 times now, and it’s consistently mediocre to poor. The room is dated, and lacking appeal, the service is, well, not very good. Our server on Sat night was a little lost, but very friendly, and obviously run off her feet being the only one on the floor. I shouldn’t have to ask for a drink in a restaurant. The food is what it is, garlic drenched, family restaurant quality Italian. But I have come to the determination that it’s not the food, or the service that keeps people coming back, but instead the great offering of local jazz. Each time I’ve gone, I have really enjoyed the nights booking, and even though the food sucks, I will probably go back.

This is really cool little spot. We went there on Friday night, and sampled a variety of tapas. Our server was fast, friendly, and kinda cute. Food was delicious, the music was a nice sexy down tempo beat, and the room was cozy. Great for a first (or even second) date. I will go back again, although I may have to show them how to make a good Manhatten.

One of our friends had recommended this place, so we stopped in here last night to check it out. I had sampled one of their stews at Taste of the Nation, and really enjoyed it. Overall the food was really good, service was solid and the menu had lots to offer. I will go back and sample more items, as most of the menu looked tasty. Prices are very reasonable, with nothing over 15$. They also offer all of their soups and stews to go, which seemed to be very popular.

Fantastic! One of the best meals I have had in Vancouver. Service is tight, and complimented the food. The room has a very cozy feel, and made me feel at home. Prices are high, but with fair value. I will return for sure, possibly until I have tried the entire menu. Incredible private dinning room for 16.

C is a nice seafood restaurant in downtown. I tried it as a part of the dineout Vancouver. Service was good and friendly. Dinner was tasty, but not crazy good, like it should be for the price. The room was very cozy, I may try it in the summer and hit the patio.

Had the chance to try this top notch, award winner on friday. They offered a $35 table haute as part of dine out Vancouver. Food was excellent, but the service was a little cocky. I will have to go on a regular night to truly assess the value of this upscale bistro.

This is a truly a great little restaurant, in the heart of old Gastown. Menu items change regularly, with something for everyone. Solid wine list, and oustanding service. I have not been for dinner, but go back soon.

This place is awesome, best west coast tapas in Van. I have tried almost everything on the menu, and its all superb. The mussles and to die for, and the french fries are kick ass. Take your girl for nice night out, or friends that like to eat appys. Be carefull not to order too many items, as your bill will up quickly! This place is almost always full, so call first.

Submitted Monday, January 10, 2005 - 11:59am [Dine in]

This place is cool. I whent in with some friends on the weekend, and had a great time. The food was great, very tasty. We had an antipasto platter(awesome!), the lamb chop appy(good but over priced), and shared a pizza (tasty) between three of us. The prices are a little high for a casual spot, but hey, thats Yaletown for ya. Great recommendation for a date, or to hang out with friends. They also feature live local jazz, which is nice. The host at the front door was on the ball, and showed us special attention after mentioning our disappointment in another local Yaletown restaurant. Table service was friendly and attentive. Thanks Nikki.
