Great pub
Submitted Sunday, August 3, 2008 - 1:51pm [Dine in]

I've been a few times now and as a ex-pat Brit, I would say this is the best pub by far in the Vancouver region. They serve real pints, none of this sleeve nonsense. I have tried the Cascade burger, tuna sandwich, braised beef, and halibut and all have been excellent, good quality chips (fries), and the sunday roast with Yorkshire puddings are worth a visit. They also offer a pub quiz, good music, good layout and an excellent bar atmosphere. highly recommended.

Great plaice

A wonderful little resaurant in Kits serving simple food done extremely well in an unpretentious and relaxed setting. My personal favorite is a greek salad to start, followed by the grilled halibut with piri piri sauce on rice. Lovely. Personable service with great value for money and I will certainly be back.

Pig fat appetizer?
Submitted Sunday, July 6, 2008 - 2:28pm [Dine in]

So the wife and I were looking for a nice local restaurant on Saturday night. We'd been to Fuel before about 6 months prior and had a good experience, but after last night we won't be going back. The meal began with a complimentary little 'salad' thing. It looked like a soft, white stick of chewing gum with a little green and a touch of orange. We were told it was "white prosciutto". I remember thinking 'I've never seen white ham before', but decided to try it anyway. As soon as I tasted it I knew what it was. Pig fat. They served us a nice slice of pig fat. I could tell by my wife's expression that she also knew what "white prosciutto" was. We quickly downed some bread and drinks to wash the thought/taste away. We told our server that being served a slice of lard and told it was ham wasn't great, and nothing was done. We weren't after something for nothing, but it would have been nice for someone to maybe come over and say something. It made me think what other ingenious ways do they have of incorporating waste food items into the menu. I was half expecting to be served with parson's nose profiteroles, or maybe eggshell ravioli. After that it didn't get any better, the risotto wasn't bad, but our entrees were basic and unimpressive. If you're paying $35 for a steak you want to be able to choose how you would like it done and you also expect something else on the plat other than a lonely slab of meat with only a drizzle of sauce for company. On the whole it seemed like the chef and his team were out of touch and pretentious.

Best curry in town.

Don't be fooled by the decor, this is the best curry house in Vancouver. I'm a huge curry fan and I have searched high and low for a place like this. The chicken curry and the chicken tikka masala are outstanding. Not much more to say really. I lived in the UK for a longtime and to find a curry house of this quality is such a relief, no more buying cookbooks and trying in vain to reproduce a masticating masterpiece, hurrah!

Bistrot Bistro1961 West 4th Avenue, Vancouver
great food in a relaxed setting

First off, I'd have to admit I'm not the world's biggest fan of French cuisine, but after a few nights at Bistrot Bistro I'm a convert. The food is beautiful, and very reasonably priced, I'd recommend the steak. The setting is relaxed and the staff are very gracious and friendly. A good spot for a date where you want to impress, but not look like you're trying too hard.
