Very disappointing
Submitted Monday, December 24, 2012 - 1:12pm [Dine in]

My friend and I wanted to try the new cafe in the Oak Bay Beach Hotel so we headed over for breakfast around 10:30 on a Sunday morning. We sat at the long indoor patio-like section and noticed that there were very few people around. I ordered coffee and it came quickly but there was no milk on the table. When the milk did arrive several minutes later, the coffee was barely warm and judging from the colour when I added the milk, it wasn't fresh coffee. We ordered a Canadian Breakfast for me and my companion had a traditional eggs benny. After waiting for about 15 or 20 minutes, breaksfast arrived and we both noted that the food wasn't hot. Nothing is less appetizing than luke warm soft poached eggs. We told the waitress and she took away our plates and asked the kitchen to express our order. It arrived in about five minutes, it was hot and tasty but nothing special.
It was downhill from here. My friends plate was removed when she finished her meal and we sat and chatted for about 20 minutes with no waiter person on site. Finally she arrived and we asked for the bill. She disappeared and we sat and waited for another 10 or 15 minutes. We were standing with our coats on waiting and no one offered to get our bill or help although there were several staff wandering around. We were very tempted to just leave without paying. Finally we asked someone else to find our bill. The manager arrived with our bill which was $42 for two basic breakfasts and two beverages. He 'comped' the coffees which reduced the bill to $32. My friend paid with two $20s and we were asked to wait for the change. We waited another five minutes while he tried to come up with $8. It came as a $5, a twoonie and quarters and nickels. We didn't leave a tip. All in all it was the worst service I have experienced in a restaurant in a very long time. I expected better and will watch to see other's reviews. Maybe this was just a bad day or their having trouble finding good staff. Wouldn't recommend it or return unless I read here that things have improved.

Fresh? not so much

Fresh is about the closest restaurant to our house so we decided to give it a try on a Tuesday night, luckily it wasn't a special occasion - we just didn't feel like cooking after a busy day.

Hubby went for the spaghetti and "meatball" after checking that this wasn't a type on the menu - yes, it came with a baseball sized meatball, mediocre tomatoe sauce and ordinary pasta - nothing special but it filled the hole and hubby ate it all up and pronounced it ordinary.

I ordered the "roasted" lamb which came with roasted veggies. The waitress informed me that they served the lamb medium rare and asked it I was ok with that. I assured her I was. Expecting some sort of lamb shoulder or leg, I was a bit surprised to be presented with three lamb chops that had grill marks. I don't think the lamb had been near an oven to be roasted. The chops sat atop some roasted potatoes, carrots, and parsnips and the whole lot was covered with a rather lumpy brown gravy that looked like it was loaded with cornstarch. When I cut into the first chop it was raw. Now I like rare meat and will eat a juicy steak without hesitation but this was RAW! When I showed the waitress, she agreed and sent it back to the kitchen to be put back on the "BBQ". I didn't get a chance to ask about the 'roasting' bit. While hubby chowed down on his spaghetti, I waited for about 10 minutes for the lamb to be cooked. It finally arrived slightly burned on the outside but cooked on the inside. All in all for $19 it was a huge disappointment and we decided we will never go back but be content to wait for this place to fail and a new, hopefully better restaurant to occupy the space that is within walking distance of our front door. I'd avoid this place at all costs.

I tried this place for the first time today and had a great lunch. I had the September special sandwich which was roasted chicken with brie on toasted challah bread. It was to die for. It came with excellent cole slaw and a perfect dill pickle. It was pretty noisy so not a great place for consersation but cozy and good food.

Didn't live up to expectations

I had heard good things so I was looking forward to breakfast. We were told it would be a 15 minute wait for a table. We waited 30. I ordered a latte and waited 20 minutes for it to be delivered. I had the breakfast special 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage and toast. The eggs were ok, the bacon was greasy and tasteless, the sausages were greasy and poor quality, the toast was swimming in butter. At best it was mediocre. I can't explain the line-up to get in. I won't go back.

Poor service and mediocre food
Submitted Monday, April 13, 2009 - 9:52pm [Dine in]

I was taken here for my birthday by a friend who lives in the neighbourhood. We had heard good things about the food. We went on a Wed. night. I ordered the lamb shanks and my friend had the albacore tuna. When it was served, neither dish was hot, just barely warm. We waited for the waiter to come by to re-heat the dishes but he never re-appeared. We waited a very long time for the plates to be cleared. Finally another waiter cleared the table and asked how dinner was. We explained about the poor service and warm food. She had the original waiter come over and apologize but didn't comp the meal or offer a reduction. I wrote a long letter to the owners explaining our bad experience but never received a response. I'll never go back.
