Ken's Chinese Restaurant1097 Kingsway, Vancouver
Up and down

I'm not sure what it is with this place, but every time I go or order take out / delivery, the food quality ranges from solid to poor to downright inedible.

First off, service is typical HK cafe style, bare minimum. Not really expecting much else, but they do tend to be a lot more curt, even rude, if you don't speak Chinese to them.

Food ranges from good to very poor. I think it depends on the chefs they have that day, because I've ordered the same noodle dish three times in the span of a week and a half and gotten three very different versions. The first one tasted great, spicy with nice bits of beef on it. The second one had barely any meat in it and was not spicy at all, and the portion was a lot smaller than the previous time. The third time they skimped on the meat even more and the noodles tasted extremely stale. I had to throw out most of it because of this. I've also had similar experiences with their pork chop (cooked to a hard crisp once) and their fried rice (1/3 of the rice was clumped up with no flavoring mixed into it).

Food is at best mediocre, and service is bare minimum, it's still probably one of the better Chinese restaurants in the area, but that's not saying much.

Hai Phong Vietnamese Restaurant1246 Kingsway, Vancouver
One of the best in the neighborhood
Submitted Wednesday, December 9, 2009 - 12:58pm [Dine in]

The area around Hai Phong is littered with Vietnamese restaurants of all sizes, and for me Hai Phong tops them all for all types of Vietnamese food.

Service is always prompt and courteous, the food is typically of very good quality (even the takeout is presented nicely in the containers), and the prices are very reasonable for the portions you get.

The pho is top notch and their combos with broken rice are very filling and tasty. Their vermicelli seems to always taste fresh, unlike other Vietnamese restaurants where the noodles taste like they've been sitting around for a while.

I think the only thing I dislike is their Vietnamese rolls, they're the thin, taquito-type and not the meatier larger spring roll type. They're still tasty, but I prefer the large ones.

One of the best Vietnamese restaurants in general in the Lower Mainland.

White Spot1476 Kingsway, Vancouver
Typical Whitespot
Submitted Wednesday, December 9, 2009 - 12:52pm [Dine in]

Servers are always friendly, and service is usually very brisk regardless of how busy the place is.

A good example of a Whitespot, food is a little on the pricier end but the quality is good and the ambiance / service is very good for this type of restaurant.

Perhaps the only complaint I have is the fries sometimes come out soggy more often than not compared to other Whitespots I've been to. All the other food seems to be similar to what I get at other Whitespots.
