Great for steak lover
Submitted Wednesday, April 8, 2009 - 2:49pm [Dine in]

I used to love their grilled rib eye. Gotta order the larger one though. It's impossible for me to eat even a third of it but the larger steak has the proper thickness factor for it to be grilled evenly on the outside & perfectly medium rare on the inside. If you opt for the smaller steak, it just wont be as nicely done--either grilled to perfection on outside & mediumto well done or poorly grilled & medium rare. Spend the extra $10-$15 for the perfect thickness thus the perfect steak. Wish they would have a perfect 4oz steak for me instead of insane 18-24-portherouse portions! Crab cakes were tasty one time & soggy another. The creamed corn is my favorite, possibly because there is a stick of butter in it. Service is hit & miss. Where have the professional servers gone? Tap water in my pellegrino? How dare you charge me for another pellegrino after pouring tap water in them!! The room has always had a lovely steakhouse feel to it. Rather empty, I guess the gangsters have gone and regular law abiding citizens haven't realized it's possibly safe again.

More rice paper rolls please!
Submitted Wednesday, April 8, 2009 - 1:48pm [Dine in]

These rice paper rolls are to die for! Tried them in almost all the flavours and they are just super amazing. I think it's the crispy crushed spring roll rapper inside. I would come here just for that. great little snack. The pho is good but a little steep, I think it was $10 or $12 dollars. Coffee is getting tastier. Service is a bit pretentious but the owner is really sweet. Am not Vietnamese nor am I French. Excuse me if i pronounce it "fo" instead of the proper 'feeuu". Slow on the tea refills. Maybe some retraining is needed. The room is clean & light & without any neon signs. Great place for lunch or snack

Super tasty shanghai dumplings!
Submitted Wednesday, April 8, 2009 - 1:35pm [Dine in]

Craving these amazing dumplings (xiao long bao) as I write this review. Truly to die for. I am concerned that on the last 2 visits, not all the dumplings, were made by the same expert hand. 6 of the 10 dumplings were perfect. The remaining 4 had inconsistant thickness to the skin and one of them even broke. All I come here for are the xiao long bao & the hot & sour soup. Great lunch for 2 or perfect afternoon snack for 4. Service is speedy & polite. Value, gave it 5 stars, need i say more? As to the ambience, it's a cheery room with lovely windows onto vancouver skyline. I must say that the table layouts can be improved upon. Feel like im sitting in the walkway or with neighbouring diners but it is a small concession for the lovely dumplings. Definete must

Fresh
Submitted Wednesday, April 8, 2009 - 1:14pm [Dine in]

I agree that this is a great new addition to coal harbour (it's slim pickings out there). The food quality here is amazing. I haven't had one untasty item. Portion sizes need to be fine tuned. Some items seem outrageously expensive while others have great value. The aburi sushi is super tasty. Fish is super fresh. Shame they never seem to have torro & the selection of fish is limited. Really should have a fresh sheet. The service is strange. Hit & miss. I think it's important to hire professional servers at a restaurant like this, as it is an essential part of the dinning experience. Cant have one great server & the rest "a bit rough around the edges". We lost our server halfway through the meal when we declined a second bottle of sake. The decor is pretty but the table lengths are terrible. I felt so far away from my dinning companion & had to ask her to repeat herself several times throughout the evening. Overall, it's one of the better Japanese restaurants in downtown

Tastiest dimsum in Downtown
Submitted Wednesday, April 8, 2009 - 12:59pm [Dine in]

This by far is the tastiest dim sum one can get their hands on in the downtown core. All the items are served pipping hot. The menu items are pretty standard for kirin. I used to love their little pork dumplings (xiao long bao) but something has happened to them-- and not in a good way. The portion is now smaller and all the dumplings are broken so that there is no 'soup' inside. Granted it is more expensive than Victoria, but it is well worth it since everything comes out hot & fresh. the service is trypical of a chinese restaurant but must give them points for trying. Ambiance is alright, like a previous reviewer, it is like sitting inthe hallway. It's weird to be sitting inside a building 'courtyard' and have office windows looking out directly to the restaurant. All in all, great dim sum in the downtown core

Zombie-like service
Submitted Wednesday, April 8, 2009 - 12:49pm [Dine in]

The food here (sandwiches) are quite fresh. Simple, fresh tasty ingredients. The daily soup is also quite tasty. It is a shame about the service. Staff are friendly, but it seems like they are in an alternate world. I find that when someone else picks up the lunch, the sandwiches are so much tastier, as I would not have been the one waiting for 15-30mins for them. Rather expensive for what it is, but I suppose that there is a premium for freshness. Cosy atmopshere in heritage building filled w/ mac totting yuppies.

Beautiful BC
Submitted Tuesday, September 2, 2008 - 1:47pm [Dine in]

views are amazing! I feel like I'm on vacation the minute i sit down. Then the server arrives & i ask myself why on earth am i here. I am so puzzled by the lacklustre service. Why spend so much money & sweat equity running a restaurant and have servers who look beautiful but cant seem to get the hang of taking orders & serving. I can be quite a demanding dinner but at such a beautiful setting all i want is drinks to be delivered, food orders to be taken correctly and then delivered in a timely fashion. There was a 15 min break between ordering drinks and getting them and another 30 mins between appys & dinner. French fries were delish. They do know how to deep fry! Everything else was alright. Go for the view & have some french fries. Be ready to be patient, not hard w/ the gorgeous view!

good but lacking in value
Submitted Tuesday, September 2, 2008 - 1:39pm [Dine in]

Nice new addition to robson street! The food here is a bit more fusion and it's a restaurant that doesn't seem as intimidating as a lot of it's counterparts. The food suffers a bit. The food is good but portions are miniscule and lacks some of the depth/body in more traditional restaurants. The menu is also relatively small. This is a great place to get your feet wet if you've never eaten at a korean restaurant. I think that night over 3/4 the tables there were non korean. The soju is more expensive than other places but the ambiance is soo much better. Service is still very utilitarian but there are a few waiters who work really hard. Some tweaking still required but overall this is a safe restaurant for those to venture out to who are less adventuresome.

so-so
Submitted Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 2:53pm [Dine in]

Pretty so-so restaurant. How many times can a Kobe meatball be reinvented? Lunch hours in dt are rather nutty but if one makes reservations and it's delayed by 15 minutes, I think an apology is in order. Food was edible. Nothing spectacular. Never order their platters. The pasta always comes out cold and tastes as if it has been sitting at a heating tray since morning. Portions are relatively small. Service was busy if not a bit strained. Understanding considering the zoo like atmosphere when it's slammed. Very little value. The room is pretty. Nice place to look at pretty people as to the food, it's so-so

Sad
Submitted Monday, August 18, 2008 - 1:37pm [Dine in]

It's too bad that there really isnt a decent Japanese restaurant in Coal Harbour. Irashai is a beautiful room, heavily renovated but still lacking. First they must change their signage. It's impossible to make reservations at a restaurant if one drives by and can't read the name on the sign. Second their menu should be scrapped and remade into a more traditional Japanese restaurant. Why on earth would i pay double the price for izakaya if I could just pop to Robson. The food is good but it's missing some starches. All izakaya places have starches. I also find the service very disconcerting. The owners having a meeting and then hovering while customers are attempting to dine. One can see the strain on their faces. Definetely not a relaxing place to dine.

This place is great. The room is lively the service pretty good and the food is just wonderful. Everytime I go, I sit and stare at the menu. Never quite certain what to order but every time that comes to the table is presented beautifuly and melts in my mouth. Lovely flavour combinations. The chef definetely has west coast style down. Perhaps a change in menu format would be good. The service is speedy and I would have given them 4 stars but food was delivered to the wrong person & descriptions were not accurate.

Great Laksa
Submitted Monday, August 18, 2008 - 12:39pm [Dine in]

Tasty laksa. Almost everyone comes for their hainan chicken, but I have been finding that the siize has been shrinking throughout the years. It used to be 4 can dine on a whole chicken but now 2 can dine on it. Food is good. Service is speedy. Ambiance has improved vastly. They used to be located in this hole a few blocks down. Tasty Asian food on the westside

This place is incredible! Definetely the best restaurant in the city. The food is to die for. Their pastas and rissottos are perfect. The ossobucco is one of the best. Others will agree that evenings end perfectly with warm truffle filled chocolate cake. Service is top notch & professional. Room is beautiful. Recommend

Solid
Submitted Monday, May 12, 2008 - 11:40am [Dine in]

I have been to this restaurant a couple of times. Although the food is pretty good, I am not sure it warrants quite a few five star reviews from single reviewers. I thought the pho broth to be quite tasty, but lost points due to the noodle texture. It was extremely soft. Service was speedy. Spring rolls were tasty, so were the subs. I do like the bread better from it's competitor down the street. I suppose it's less healthier due to more fat content. Ambience is like any little hole in the wall, this one is a bit more cheerful due to all the natural light.

Submitted Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - 11:04am [Dine in]

The food is handsdown one of the best places in the city for Mexican. Not greasy, just flavorful, clean and simple. It is a shame that the place is so small. The ambiance is a bit lacking and is more of a take out place more than anything else. The service is a bit inconsistant but it is afterall a family joint. I suggest take out!

Submitted Thursday, February 14, 2008 - 3:00am [Dine in]

Again, I was soo excited to pop into this restaurant after all the rave reviews that I should have expected nothing but a downward spiral. The miso soup was delish! And then everything else got progressively bland and forgettable. The tempura was alright, just like any 'real' japanese restaurants. The sashimi was not that fresh. A couple of us went home feeling unwell that evening & the following day. Some of the rolls were just absolutely awful. Fried tuna/salmon of some sort. Bland, boring and just a waste. Service started out well. After further bottles of sake were declined, service became non-existant. Perhaps this restaurant deserves another visit, but there are so many new restaurants popping up that this one may get a pass. Save your money for elsewhere, very little value here

Could be better
Submitted Wednesday, February 13, 2008 - 4:08pm [Dine in]

I was so excited to try this restaurant thinking that the Bin chef is now working here. The food was expensive for what it was. The only memorable part of the meal was the lobster risotto. This is a lovely place to lounge. I suppose it aspires of being more of an Afterglow than a Bin. Shame about the food. Service was prompt and friendly. Seats and table height are rather uncomfortable for a meal. Nice place for drinks.

Submitted Wednesday, February 13, 2008 - 4:02pm [Dine in]

After reading so many good reivews, I thought I'd pop by and see this little gem. Sadly, there isn't much to rave about. I suppose that compared to it's neighbour, the food is better. The chicken souvlaki was the same as every other average greek restaurant. The vegetarian moussaka was utterly disgusting, mushy and greasy & lacking in flavour. The rice came out mushy & soggy as if it had been sitting somewhere for a few days. Service was prompt but a little worn down. Probably won't be going there unless absolutely necessary

Best Ramen in Vancouver
Submitted Friday, February 1, 2008 - 4:10pm [Dine in]

Wow! I can't wait to go back & try the other two ramens. Miso ramen was full bodied rich flavourful and just absolutely scrumptious. Got to pick 2 other toppings aside from the standard green onion & bamboo shoots. The ramen has a beautiful chewy texture and is a little thicker than the ramen shop around the corner. The place is clean, newly renovated, and has a steady flow of customers coming in. The service still needs a little bit of work. Servers are very polite but I suppose the flow of service can be greatly improved upon. Perhaps a bit speedier on the water/tea refills (just as the previous reviewer mentioned) and also quicker delivery of the bill. I cant believe that a bowl of ramen including tax is $7!!! A lovely lunch in downtown with change to spare! They also give you a stamp card! 1 free bowl for every 10 bowls purchased. Anyhow, this will be my new favorite ramen joint in Vancouver. Definetely a must try! (And no, I don't work there or have any ties to the ramen restaurant. Just very excited to see an inexpensive but delicious restaurant in downtown)
