Budgies Burritos44 Kingsway, Vancouver
Fill Up Fast
Submitted Tuesday, April 13, 2010 - 6:21pm [Dine in]

Well, it looks like a bit of a hole in the wall and screams hipster hangout, but the burritos are huge & delicious. I also find the counter attendants to be quite friendly. Burritos don't take long to make, so the food is fast and convenient. It's also quite healthy and you can opt for vegan versions (guacamole instead of cheese).
I've also tried the tacos and they're quite large and filling.

Bang for your buck, for sure.

Love the food!
Submitted Tuesday, April 13, 2010 - 6:12pm [Dine in]

I LOVE the food at The Foundation, and it's super well priced. As a student, this is one of my "go to" restaurants.
The service can vary. Sometimes you're left standing at the door for a long time, sometimes you're helped right away. The servers also vary from quick and efficient to lazy and rude. I believe in tipping accordingly, so when I get bad service they get a mediocre tip.
Otherwise, food is outstanding and I really like the lunch server, she's rad.

Try the Molton Tofu, it's my favourite. My boyfriend loves the BLT-ish, but I think it may only be served for lunch.

As for ambiance, I hate the wall quotes, but otherwise it's fine. Suits the food, if you know what I mean.

Les Faux Bourgeois Bistro663 E 15th Ave, Vancouver
Off the Beaten Path
Submitted Sunday, January 3, 2010 - 1:25am [Dine in]

My boyfriend and I wanted to have a romantic night out that was within our budget, but still special. Neither of us had been to Les Faux Bourgeois before, but my boyfriend had been next door at the Lions Den before.
I made a reservation the day of (Saturday night) and the only times available for a table for two was at 5:30 or 9:30pm. We opted for a late dinner and arrived to a busy restaurant. Our table was ready by 9:30 and we had read the dinner menu outside and had already decided on our food.
We ordered a really nice bottle of French red wine (an Hermitage Syrah 03) which was $53 and really tasty. I had the vegetarian Alsatienne Tart for my appetizer and my boyfriend had the Warm Goatcheese Salad. The tart was good, but the salad was better! It had goat cheese crostini in it and was very refreshing. For our mains I had the Duck Confit and my boyfriend had the vegetarian option, which is a Portobello Parmentier. Both were absolutely delicious. Not too salty, and the sauces weren't too runny or thick. The duck was tender and the sauce didn't run into the salad. My boyfriend's portobello dish was rich in flavour (portobello and mixed mushrooms topped with a parmesan mashed potato) and well-priced for a vegetarian dish. We shared the Creme Brulee for dessert and had coffee with it. The brulee was creamy, flavourful and consistent.
Our server was very professional and friendly. He checked on us a lot and we were attended to by other staff aswell. The food came quickly and at appropriate times (not too early/late) and we didn't feel rushed. It was an approach to a traditional idea and didn't feel contrived or pretentious. It didn't feel out of place in Vancouver, but made us feel like we were in another country (perhaps France?).
All in all it was an extremely nice experience and I would definitely return.

Bandidas Taqueria2781 Commercial Drive, Vancouver
Great Food, Great Price!
Submitted Thursday, December 10, 2009 - 5:25pm [Dine in]

I love Bandidas! I come here pretty regularly and am always happy. The food is delicious and consistent. I've had the house salad, tortilla soup, enchiladas, Ronny Russel, Estelle and Wolf & Goat burritos/tacos. You can get the burrito bakes with sauce and cheese. I've also had breakfast here and find it equally delicious! The benny's are made on cornbread muffin tops with salsa instead of hollondaise. The food doesn't make me feel weighed down, as it's fresh and nutritious. Love the small feel of it, and the service is pretty on point. The owners are always there working in the kitchen and it really feels good to be there.
Go! Eat!

Love It!
Submitted Thursday, December 10, 2009 - 5:15pm [Dine in]

My boyfriend and I have been here for dinner twice, as I live about two blocks away. It's the only place I've been for Ethiopian, but my boyfriend has been to a few places and says he likes it best.
We had the vegetarian platter with the fish (basa). I crave this all the time!! The first time we went the chef took our order and essentially told us what to order and we've had it twice. Not overly spiced, not too oily, so tasty and filling! It's basically lentils and such served on a large piece of sour bread, with side of the bread and you rip off bits of the bread and pick up the food with it. No utensils, just sour bread! It's fun.
The service is good and the vegetarian platter is only $11. The fish, however, is $15. I really enjoy going here, it feels very cozy and it's fun to feed other people! If you haven't been for Ethiopian, come to Fassil!

Stellar!
Submitted Thursday, December 10, 2009 - 5:06pm [Dine in]

A few days ago my friends and we decided to try Stella's on Cambie. It's a good meeting point because it's in the neighbourhood in between our respective houses (Mount Pleasant/Kits). Anyways, it was pretty busy, which the hostess said was usual for a weekend. It wasn't a long wait and the hostess was super friendly. Although the place is very loud, we were able to get a pretty good seat and our water glasses were filled immediately. The beers on tap are pretty well priced and although I'm not regularly a beer drinker I decided to go for a Fruli strawberry beer, as per the server's suggestion. It didn't even taste like beer to me, I loved it. The Belgian beer list was a bit intimidating, so I didn't go for them, but maybe next time I will. I'm sure my boyfriend would love them.
Anyways, we ordered some Thai mussels (amazing!) and some poutine, which was really filling and I thought it needed more gravy. We also had the fish tacos, bococcini salad and the ribs. We had the cheesecake for dessert and it was probably the best dessert I've had! If you go to Stella's, you have to get the cheesecake.
Overall the food was great and the beer was better! It's not the cheapest place to go, but if you want to entertain some guests or go out with some friends I would recommend Stella's!
It has a great lounge atmosphere, especially with the fireplace. It's quite dark, so I can't imagine going in during the day, but I think it's a fabulous night spot! Again, it's pretty loud so I would avoid going on an intimate occasion.
