High expectations, Falls short.
Submitted Thursday, May 14, 2009 - 1:24pm [Dine in]

The problem with this restaurant is execution. It's not that the names of the dishes on the menu don't sound yummy, but I find that the food is often overcooked and they rely heavily on sauces to cover up. I've tried the squid ink seafood pasta, stuffed quail, baked pork chop rice, and stuffed chicken (i've come here multiple times because friends love this place). Let's start with the squid ink pasta. For a "Pasta House", I expected a lot more from my pasta; When they said squid ink pasta, I thought it was going to be squid ink pasta in squid ink sauce, it wasn't; it was just black pasta (pasta didn't taste like anything) The pasta was bland and overcooked. The sauce is a chunky tomato sauce, nothing special. The baked pork chop rice was the one that disappointed me the most. I know, it's not a traditional hong kong style restaurant, but it's not hard to make. The pork chop was dry and hard, there were loads of undercooked onions in it and it did not taste good. The rest of the dishes can be described in one word "overcooked"

The service is alright, not bad, not exceptional. But the food takes forever to come. Food normally takes 40-50 minutes to come and is definitely NOT worth the wait.

Attempt at fusion: failed.

The problem I find with some Japanese restaurants these days is they try to be creative with sushi. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and in Kamei Royale's case, it doesn't. We tried the Hamachi inferno, which is basically Hamachi nigiri sushi where the Hamachi is lightly cooked with a torch before it's served. I have no problem with eating sushi like that, but the problem is, they felt the need to add some kind of herb in the sushi rice and it tasted really bad. My friend and I both thought it tasted like perfume. We also tried the Yakiudon, another dish that should have been kept simple but they decided to add the same herb and red onions in it and again, it also tasted like perfume. Also the amount of tobiko they add in the dish makes it rather unappetizing, if not, gross. The dragon roll was alright, i've had tastier ones at other restaurants. The oyster motoyaki was good. Now for dessert, i ordered the creme caramel, it was not sweet enough, couldn't taste the caramel at all. My friend ordered the coffee gelato where they drizzle this coffee concentrate on it. The gelato was good, but the coffee concentrate was horrible; it was the most bitter thing i've tasted and unfortunately, the gelato didn't offset the bitter taste.

The service was really good though, I have to say. The waitresses and hostess were friendly, tea and water were refilled without having to ask and the food came promptly.

Despite the good service, I would not come back to this restaurant again.

Drinks
Submitted Friday, July 11, 2008 - 12:06pm [Dine in]

There's always a long line up at this place. I ordered the pork chop rice and a lemon red tea with coconut jelly. The pork chop was sliced too thin, I felt like I was eating a piece of deep fried dough. I have also tried the beef hot pot, the soup base is quite good, a little on the sweet side, but again, the pieces of beef are so small, I hardly noticed them at all.

The drinks are good, but i think they are overpriced; around 4.75-5.50 for a drink without tips.

The service is fast and efficient, and the waitresses have a great memory.

I will go back to this place for the drinks.

Disappointing

My friend and I ordered the salmon tataki, takoyaki, beef sashimi, and oden.

Salmon Tataki: The salmon was seared beforehand. It did not taste special.

Takoyaki: One of the better ones that I have tasted, I thought it was weird that there was yellow mustard and not mayo, but I liked it.

Beef Sashimi: it was sliced too thick and i prefer the traditional sauce rather than the tomato/mustard sauce that they use.

The fish at the sushi bar did not look fresh and it was also not neatly arranged. Quite unappetizing.

The $2 coke was poured in the smallest, most narrow glass I have ever seen in my life. I think they could have been a bit more generous about that.

I will not go back again.

We ordered the salmon pizza, takoyaki, hanpen, motsu, potato balls, oyster motoyaki, kimchi fried rice and beef sashimi. Aside from the beef sashimi, the other items were great. The beef sashimi had a great sauce but when i bit into it, i could tell that it was not defrosted completely. One thing to beware of is the sauce they give you at the beginning before the meal begins. It has a large ball of crushed garlic and if you mix it all in, it leaves a horrible taste in your mouth till the next morning. So what i normally do is only mix in only half of the garlic.

It is better to go to Manzo with a group of friends(5-7 people), otherwise with only 2 or 3 people, you can't really taste a lot of the good food on the menu.

The Grape Calpico is a really good drink, they also have a drink that has Calpico and Pineapple juice in it, also another one of my favorites. Drinks are priced relatively high and their glasses are not very big.

I would come back again.

I ordered the deep fried chicken, a bowl of noodles that had a tomato soup base with beef brisket in it and beef rice(apologies for not knowing their actual English names, my mother ordered the food in Chinese). One thing i love about their deep fried chicken is that it doesn't taste bland and it's juicy. The soup base for the noodles were aromatic and full of flavor; however, i found that the beef brisket was quite tough. The beef rice is also very good, we added some money to add an egg in it and I find that the egg completes the dish.

The service there is very efficient and fast. On busy days, if you are by yourself or with another person you may be asked to share tables with people you don't know.

I would go there again.

The food tastes best at the beginning and once water and sauce is added to the pot, it does not taste as good. I always get very thirsty after eating there and it's probably because of the MSG.

The service is good. We did not order that much and one of the waitresses actually brought us a plate of food that she arranged herself and i found that was very thoughtful.

My boyfriend tried the green sofa(a drink with calpico, apple juice and apple syrup), i found that it was too sweet.

I would come here again.

One of the signature items at ajisai is probably the seafood salad; fresh greens, great variety of seafood and the perfect dressing. They also have great bento boxes at lunch for a pretty good price;however, one thing that i never like about the bento box is the daily side dish that comes with it;I always found it quite bland, but overall, this place has never disappointed me, consistently yummy.
