I finally convinced a couple of friends to come along to the Rugby Club with me, because I had heard such great things about it. The first time, the service was extremely slow, and borderline rude. The food was OK, the mussels were good, and the price was right. I decided to give it another shot.
We walked in on a weekday night, and were told there was a wait for a table. We were OK with that, so we waited. And waited. And waited. After about 45 minutes, the hostess took us to our table. At this point we realized that half the restaurant was empty, but all the tables were dirty. This was a bad sign, but we were hungry. After sitting for another 15 minutes, we still did not have any drinks, and no one had come by. The staff were standing around chatting, so we just left. They probably didn't even notice.
This is a special occasion restaurant, to be sure. Many people I know have fond memories of their experiences at the Cannery, and for good reason. The Waitstaff are all pros, and on top of their games. They are expert at making you feel special without being overbearing.
The appetizers and desserts were very nice, but not what I would describe as spectacular or mind blowing. I appreciated the soft shell crab appetizer the most, and the pavlova was very tasty.
We arrived when the restaurant was full, and we still got a very lovely table right by the window, but even if we were further back, the view is still wonderful. I will be very sad when the Cannery leaves this location, and I hope that they can bring it back elsewhere, where the ambiance won't be lost. Go while you can!
I'll start with the disclaimer that this restaurant is fairly new, so they might just be working out the kinks.
The brunch bennys were warmish to cold, and the service was quite awkward, as if the server was not very comfortable to be working there. The view is great, but only from a few of the tables closest to the windows.
One bright spot: Desserts! They were amazing... Other than that, not a place I'd necessarily go out of my way for again.
First time I've visited Stella's and it was a good experience. At first I didn't know what to expect, it was very, very busy, and with no seats left at the bar you have to loiter around to wait for the table. Even so, it was very busy and a very friendly hostess kept is updated with when we could expect a table to be ready.
After being seated, we ordered mussels (of course) which came in a creamy saffron and spinach broth. Very nice. We also ordered a tomato and bocconcini salad which I probably wouldn't order again, it was somewhat overdressed.
The beer list is awesome, tons of selection, draught and bottle, a little something for everyone.
Had a pretty nice dinner at Ebisu this evening. Looking a past posts, my comments are similar, this would definitely be a great place to grab some drinks before the club, or while watching a game, not typical for a japanese place. Drinks are cheap, and the atmosphere is nice. The service is not so fast, but the waitresses are pleasant enough. We tried the tuna tacos in crispy wontons, which were quite good, and the prawn gyoza, which was also good. We ordered a strange Kobe beef roll with cream cheese too, not quite like anything I've tried before, but interesting for certain. I'm sure I'll be back as the prices are quite reasonable, and it would be a good place to go with a bigger group.
We stayed in the Summit lodge on the last visit to Whistler, and decided to try out the adjoining tapas place-Elements. Have to say the service was excellent, cheery, fast and all of the server's recommendations were on the money. Make sure that you try the lettuce wraps when you go. Also a very nice choice of BC wines by the glass, and the sticky toffee pudding was delicious.
Went to Chambar the first time with some Chef friends who always seem to know the place to get fresh and innovative food in Vancouver. You will be dreaming of the moules frites for weeks to come. I ordered the flatiron steak as well, but if you're a smaller girl like me, you could have the mussels as a main course, it is quite a large portion, and I couldn't finish my main. Quite a shame because my friend's pot de creme was very nice as well, I would have ordered one if I had the room. The server was good, and unassuming. He was not overbearing, but he was there when needed. Only small comment I cold make would be that the wine by the glass was short poured for some of the glasses, easily solved by ordering a bottle, which I felt was a better value.
It was a great experience overall, and I hope to go back soon.
I always get take out. The staff are very kind and friendly, and the sushi is first rate. A overall very good neighborhood sushi place, and a standout among the dozen or so similar places in the vicinity.
I visited this place for my birthday, kind of a last minute plan, as a place to grab a drink before the club. Overall, very disappointing. They give out peanuts in the shells, and there are shells everywhere. It gives the atmosphere of being pub like, but due to the license, you are required to order food, and after the server's recommendation, a platter of grilled cheese sandwiches (!) arrived at the table. I was not surprised to see the previous review where the reviewer said that they had been charged for drinks that they hadn't had, as we had the same problem. We checked with the server, and she insisted that they were ours, so we didn't argue. We just won't be back.
