For the stiff shirts and the short skirts
Submitted Sunday, January 17, 2010 - 11:18pm [Dine in]

My former boss (of course) took me to Coast for a farewell luncheon last week. Being unfortunately all too aware of the hugely successful restaurant/bar scene in Vancouver I knew what to expect, and I got just that. I begrudgingly ordered the "Hers" lunch box (sorry science, apparently it is gender that determines one's preference for Manhattan over New England chowder and not taste buds) which came with said chowder, a shrimp wrap and tuna sashimi salad.

The chowder was acceptable, if a tad salty, the wrap was fairly bland though I did appreciate the use of coconut milk in its sauce, and the tuna sashimi salad was just okay. More than enough to fill for twelve dollars, but not enough to excite. My boss ordered the mango California roll, severely overpriced for its taste at just under ten, and the salmon fish and chips, which were pretty standard but generously apportioned. Dessert was the sampler, and a sample of mediocrity it was, with the lone exception of their dark chocolate and passion fruit foam tart.

Service was excellent, and I feel for the servers who must handle the thankless cubicle kings and queens on a daily basis. Not my scene by any stretch, but not the worst of its kind.

Excellent paninis!
Submitted Sunday, January 17, 2010 - 10:13pm [Dine in]

When I saw the price of their paninis I will admit that I balked - 10 dollars each seemed pretty hefty for what looked like a relatively small serving. However, after trying the Torino and vegetarian varieties I was very impressed. They are fresh, flavourful, and the dried fig is a unique and tasty choice of garnish. Service is usually good, but minimal: order at the counter and the server brings it to your table. Overall, my favourite thing about Mario's is the invariable quality of the food, with my least favourite things being the tight seating arrangement and the extra charge if you share an item (though I have shared in the past and not been charged). Definitely recommended for a quick workday indulgence.

An unfortunate luncheon
Submitted Sunday, January 17, 2010 - 7:01pm [Dine in]

Stopped in for lunch with a coworker who had eaten here years before and said it was "great." Evidently, management has changed, because our experience was anything but. We waited for the server to take our orders for about ten minutes despite it not being very busy, and then my friend and I both ordered the tuscan vegetarian "sandwich." When I ordered the soup of the day (chicken vegetable) the server made a face and quietly warned me not to get it but to go with the salad instead. She was pleasant enough, and I appreciated her suggestion, but it did give my friend and I some worries about the rest of the food we ordered.

As expected, we should have taken the server's warning to include the rest of the food. Our "sandwiches" were very tough pita pockets filled primarily with room temperature artichokes and mushrooms (and a bit of roasted red pepper)that had been hastily spooned out of a jar of flavourless oil, most of which oozed everywhere. The menu said there would be cheese, but none was to be found. The salad was of similar quality, but was literally half rotten, with black and slimy leaves constituting about half of the serving. The fries my friend ordered instead of the salad tasted like McCain's fries baked about an hour previously and left to cool on the counter. All in all, I could not believe that our meals were 14.95 each!

The seating arrangement of the restaurant was pretty diner-like, which is too bad considering that the windows and decorating are otherwise enticing to a passerby.
