I've been here twice. The first time was a while back and the second time was about a month ago. Both time the food was amazing and the service was abysmal. We waited for menus, watched our drinks get warm on the bar, and even got a nice show of staff members drinking on duty (both the bartender AND the servers). The first time we were here our server was slurring her words so much we couldn't even understand what she was saying. One too many shots behind the bar maybe? The only reason there was ever a second time is the food. I do hate to say it, but it's awesome. First we had the daily special (some sort of vegetable soup) and the second time we had burgers and the thai noodle salad. Maybe we'll just do takout from now on...
We moved downtown about 5 or 6 months ago, and one of the things I really miss about kits is temaki. The food is always incredible. I've never ordered a bad item. The sashimi is of great quality and they always have good specials. I love the dungeness roll and the real crab roll. The service is better then most sushi restaurants, and the room is a lot nicer then it was before they renovated.
The one thing I can say about this place is that the value is definitely there. I usually try to stick to cooked items (noodles, dynamite and cali rolls, agedashi tofu) and I've never been disappointed. The quality might not be the greatest but the amount of food you get for the price is incredible! The service can be a bit rushed, especially when they're busy, but I guess I understand that.
I've had a few different things off the menu at this place. The food is always stellar! The service is always a bit indifferent. The restaurant itself is not as clean as I'd like, but not really that bad. The value is the same as everywhere else. This place really just rides on their food, so I really hope that they don't change anything!
My partner and I went out to this restaurant yesterday, after a movie. I used to work in a restaurant and I know good food/service when I experience it. From the moment we walked in, the service was very accommodating. The hostess was friendly and efficient. We sat down at a nice table by the window and ordered a bottle of wine. The server was professional while still being a lot of fun, and although I didn't speak with either of them, I heard that the manager and busser were very helpful as well. The server preformed a proper wine service, and then helped us go through the menu. We each tried a pasta dish, as well as some of the house bread. The food was delicious and had a nice balance and seasoning to it. Our waitress made sure to check up on us periodically, and after we finished eating we took some time to talk and relax without feeling rushed OR abandoned. All in all, it was a very lovely evening!
The review underneath is obviously planted my the management at tatlows. I've been to both, the old and the new. before the service was horrible, but we would go because they had a huge menu and the food was great. Now the service is slightly better (not enough to actually be called "service" but at least they remember to put your order in. I'd maybe give it a 1.5) but the menu is gone! we tried a couple of things, and they were all generic, deep fried. Definitely not worth putting up with the service. Tatlows owners, stop worrying about the staff and bring back some decent food!
I've eaten here once, with a friend of mine at his insistence. The service was non-existent, slow, and bordering on rude. We waited at the front door, after we got our menus to order drinks, and then a loooong time for the food to arrive. I only ordered tea, because I didn't really trust the food safety aspects of the place (this was after they had been in the newspaper for the hepatitis outbreak) . My friend had the katered affair, which he said wasn't nearly as good as it used to be. We finally got the bill, paid and left. The next day I decided to check the health inspector website (www.foodinspectionweb.vcha.ca) to see if I was just being paranoid, and let's just say I wasn't.
I usually go here maybe two or three times a month. They've changed the menu a few times since they opened. First the food got dramatically better, then the last time, they actually lowered the prices, and made them quite a bit more affordable. I was very surprised, usually restaurants in Vancouver lower the quality and up the price, not the other way around. I was blown away by some of the stuff we ordered. We had the coconut vegetables (It was only 8$, and was a full entree) the calamary and shrimp, the mussels (Only 7$, and they were very fresh) and a couple of satays. the service was very quick, and helpful with our questions, and the room has always been gorgeous.
We went here for dessert the other night. Seemed simple enough, but apparently not. We just asked for our drinks in to go cups, because we were going to walk back home after. The server started taking our order, then stopped when we asked her to put our desserts on a plate and told us we needed to order at the table to get our food plated. um, we did just order. So we go and sit down, REORDER our drinks and food, and wait a good 15 minutes to get everything. Then she brings us our drinks in glass cups. We asked for take out cups, and the new girl tells us we're supposed to order take out drinks at the counter. We almost walked out. We just asked for our bill, (and, of course, the credit cards have to be run through back at the counter again). don't bother with trying to ortder anything for there.
