Shady Island Seafood Bar & Grill3800 Bayview Street, #112, Richmond
Has Gone Downhill
Submitted Sunday, May 30, 2010 - 2:02pm [Dine in]

I used to take a lot of clients to Shady Island for business lunches. Virtually every one of them commented on the great location of this place. Right on the docks it was great to wander around after lunch and grab a coffee or dessert at one of the dock's small kiosks. I can't say their food is bad, in fact some of the menu items are indeed very tasty and well presented. The problem is that their food is inconsistent with more and more of it being bad rather than good. The service has declined along with the quality of food. Perhaps it is a result of the economic times but this restaurant is simply no longer worthy of visiting. The food continues to worsen, the menu remains flat, service is crazy bad and management doesn't seem to care or get that this place is slowly sinking into oblivion. If it weren't for the location I don't believe this place would still be around. Too bad ~ it used to be a great lunch destination spot.

Loud, Dark and Below Average Food
Submitted Sunday, May 30, 2010 - 1:40pm [Dine in]

Seriously, you can find local pubs with far better food and more ambience than this place has.
It was extremely noisy, quite dark and poorly laid out. The menu was a cross between Burger King, Earls and any Pizza joint you may care to name. Prices were high for the quality of food they served .... service was slow with inexperienced servers. In short: I felt 'ripped off'.......there i s no way I'll go back!

New Hong Kong Restaurant9100 Blundell Road, #470, Richmond
Favorite Chinese Restaurant in Richmond ..... and that's saying something!
Submitted Monday, May 24, 2010 - 1:17pm [Dine in]

I was so glad to see the New Hong Kong Restaurant in the reviews.

I and my family have been eating at 'Pop's' (Ken)place since they opened.
Although there very many other chinese restaurants in Richmond we always hold this place as our favorite. Yes, there are other restaurants with better service, more menu items and better facilities but overall the New Hong Kong wins out.

It's pretty basic, little ambience, but the food is fantastic .... especially if Ken, himself, does the cooking. He'll prepare the food as you want it and stays away from using a lot of MSG as most other chinese places do. You can also bring in your own fresh seafood and he'll cook it up for you for a very reasonable price.

A 'Mom and Pop' place that is well worthy of a visit. I agree with the other reviewer - you will be hooked after eating here ..... give it a try :)

Maurya Indian Cuisine1643 W Broadway, Vancouver
OK ..... but a bit pricey
Submitted Monday, May 24, 2010 - 12:59pm [Dine in]

Cannot really find anything to be either excited about or to complain about.
Maurya's serves fairly good food, although not spectacular or memorable. I found their food tasty; it was prepared quickly and service was about average. I did feel a bit rushed by the waiters to order quickly. A bonus was the free parking behind the restaurant.

I have certainly had better tasting and better priced indian food however, in the end, I will return to Maurya's and try some of their other menu items.

It's sad when Safeway's BBQ Chicken tastes better
Submitted Friday, June 6, 2008 - 5:33pm [Dine in]

I tried this place when it first opened, years ago. It was pretty bad back then for taste and value.

I recently thought I'd give it another try and found that nothing has changed - it was bad way back when and it still is bad!

Ordered take out and the wait time was decent, about 10 minutes.

When I opened the order at home i found the half chicken to be small, about the size of a cornish hen, cooked too much and tough. The rice was hard and tastelees and the corn on the cob was shrivelled and dry. Not a great deal for $12.99!

You can get a BBQ Chicken at any of the major grocery stores for about $8, dribble some hot sauce on it and have a whole good sized chicken that tastes way better than Nando's.

Sorry guys, you won't see me back again - you simply offer a bad product.

1 1/2 hours to almost eat
Submitted Friday, June 6, 2008 - 4:57pm [Dine in]

A newly opened cafe where Ikea used to be on No. 3 Road.
Food was good, if you could get what you ordered, if you got anything at all!!!

Very poor service. Waited almost 90 minutes to get food which was not what I ordered - after 3 repeated attempts to get the order right (their standard combo order) I gave up and ate what they brought me, simply because I was starving at this point. Did not get the drink (lime soda) and desert (mango ice cream) which was included in the price.

When I went to pay the bill there were charges on it for what I originally ordered and what I actually was given to eat - two completely different items! They did adjust the bill after again spending 5 minutes trying to explain to them what I actually ended up eating.

The servers did not understand English - or hand signs - or pointing at the items on the menu. They were totally clueless. It was a real "Horror Show".

There is no way anyone could convince me to go back to this cafe.
