It seems good looking waitresses is all they have
Submitted Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 5:27pm [Dine in]

I've been to this place on several occassions, and I've found nothing redeeming about it. The prices are rather high, and the portions are small. Although I'm a big eater, I can average it out and see what should be expected. With their portions I'd expect actually decent food, but it was bland. I don't think the price range of $20-$30 gives it justice. A meal will probably cost you over 20 and into the 30's as well. An appetitizer will be an additional 10. Drinks? 7 bucks for one, let alone two...

Amongst anyone who I've talked with concerning this place, they all seem to agree that the only redeeming factor is that they have attractive waitresses. I'm afraid that can only take you so far in a restaurant. I've never actually gone to a restaurant because of the attractiveness of the staff, but if I ever were to give an example why that would be a bad idea, this place would be it.

Aside from how the staff LOOKS, their service was poor. My table had to be waited on by another waitress because ours was busy meandering off doing god knows what. Maybe she was busy, I don't know, but throughout our times there we spent a undesirable amount of time trying to flag someone down for service. One time we waited 30 minutes just to PAY the bill, and get out. Being punctual at the end is usually critical for tips...

The ambience of the place reminds me more of a lounge than an actual restaurant, yet they try to be both. People sit around casually, and they have stools at the bar with various drinks available. That's fine, but they seem to skimp out on the restaurant aspect of their business, which is why it gets a 3. It looks nice, a lot of work has been put into providing a nice atmosphere, but there is too much emphasis on that, than actual service and restaurant activities. I can't recommend this place.

The food is actually rather above average quality, and I say this because I usually come in big parties, and we ask for a lot. Although they do give us less than what we ordered sometimes, I can't blame them. Most people can't finish over 150 pieces of sashimi, but we did. And the quality was always consistent.

The point is that everyone tells me so and so does something better, or in that particular way. That's all fine and good, but frankly speaking this place is pretty solid. The service is good, food arrives quickly, the atmosphere is good, and very casual. The decor is very traditional, and the place is kept clean. There are obviously probably better places out there, but for the price this place charges I'll take this over any other.

My favourite is the Vancouver Dream Roll, questionable when you think of the ingredients, but just order one and see how it goes. Warning, there is cream cheese in it for those with allergies. If you haven't tried this place, I'd recommend you try it out, and don't judge it with the highest of expectations. It works.

I go there whenever I can

Abdul's place isn't really a restaurant, and a lot of people go in there for the purpose of fast food, but the quality is far beyond that. The food is amazing, the ingredients are always fresh, and prepared right before you. I even speak to the owner Abdul from time to time, and he likes to point out how he keeps quality high. You can see and ask about anything he is doing (but I only do this when there isn't anyone else there, because when its busy, it's busy!), and he even lets me customize my order. I'd highly recommend you try the platters or shwarmas as they are first, because either way you look at it, everything is really good.

The service is expedient, and I've been there during lunch rushes when Abdul is the ONLY one working. He's got a pretty good system going, and he makes sure he does everything in order and properly. He doesn't skimp on quality, but he isn't slow. The most I've ever had to wait was 30 minutes, and that was because I was at the end of a line that stretched outside of his place. He works very hard and diligently, I can't say anything bad about the service he, or the employees that he hires, provides. He makes sure that quality is kept high too. He even asks the regulars, such as myself, about the job they are doing when he's not around.

The prices, are roughly $6 to $11 for his menu items. The cheaper being the shwarma's he serves, with platters at the other end. I'm usually a big eater, and no matter what I order, I either end up satisfied, or completely full with leftovers at the end of it. (Also, microwaving the leftovers, though lower in quality, isn't bad at all) I can't find myself thinking of anywhere else that serves as much as Abdul's does, at that quality.

Like I said about the place, it's not a restaurant. Yes, there are tables and chairs, for those who want to sit and eat. But for the most part people come in and leave once they get their food. It's nothing fancy, or overly warming, but it's practical and it works.

I can't recommend this place

I've been there on three seperate occassions, and the quality seems to get worse everytime I go. Firstly, this isn't a bad location, nor is it that horrible in ambience or decor. It's a solid place for a restaurant, and the service, though lacking, wasn't all that horrible.

On all three occassions I have been there, we ordered from the All You Can Eat menu. Their selection is okay, and there's nothing wrong with it. My beef (pardon the pun there) is with their food. I'm a fan of sashimi, but I found myself feeling hesitant about eating theirs. The first serving was ice cold, and then as we ordered more (we were a rather large party) it began coming in frozen. In fact, I had to literally place it down on the plate, and let it THAW. I am not kidding here, the pieces were even stuck together. It seems to me that they cut the fish into portions and serving plate when it first comes in, then freeze it (at least I hope that's the order they do it in). Unfortunately this is an upset in terms of quality. Speaking of quality, at one visit I found myself picking bones out of my salmon sashimi. My personal best is a total of 5 pieces of bones on my plate. Consideration should be taken into properly preparing their sashimi, and not freezing it.

With more on freezing their food, the same procedure seems to be done with their beef sashimi. For those of you that do not know, beef sashimi is beef with the outside is cooked just a little bit, and inside raw, it is then diced and served. Our's was frozen, and stuck together. In fact, one of the plates it came on even had frozen pieces of ice from their freezer on the plate. I don't know the specifics of the health codes in regards to re-freezing food, but that is sketchy to say the least. And it tasted bland to boot.

The service? It was okay, considering it was full and there were many orders being slung at the poor servers. They managed to get every order in, and people were satisfied. The servers have a good system of transferring orders to the kitchen, and the food arrives on time. That is if you manage to get ahold of them. Given the context of when I did have the chance to eat there, I can't exactly say service is to be expected on all 5 stars. Nevertheless the experience left me wanting more, hence the two stars.

Other than that, I have had no food poisoning or anything despite their questionable food preparations. My main problem was with their sashimi. Other than that the various other foods they provide are good and satisfactory. I just don't find myself looking at their price and saying this was worth it though. Wouldn't recommend.
