Makoto became our new go to spot after the first time we tried it! It's a small Japanese family run place and due to the limited seating capacity (about 20 people) and the proximity to our home, we generally got our food to go.
But oh- what food! Their sushi is outstanding and always looks amazing. The chef is obviously talented and enjoys his work. Even when we opened our little take out boxes at home, we were always blown away by how beautiful the food looked. The salmon sashimi was once presented as rose buds! Absolutely charming.
The prices here are probably higher than those you would expect to pay at a local small sushi place, but I always believe that you should pay for quality and at Makoto - you definitely are.
The interior is very cool - lots of black lacquered wood, cute little vases and a very unique bar made from a tree trunk I believe.
The service, when dining in, is pretty good. But I always maintain that one never goes to a sushi place for the service- they go for the food. The wait staff could probably need augmentation - like 1 more - but I don't think the owners will be having any more children :0)
I will definitely stop in for something yummy (try their very unique Volcano roll - actually looks like one) whenever I am in Burnaby again.
