Accidental Take out
Submitted Wednesday, July 1, 2015 - 8:47am [Take-out]

Having ordered from JustEat in the past and content with the food and service (delivery boy brought it on time despite our mess up on the address), we decided to head out for dinner here. We thought Monday night would be good enough in terms of finding a seat and not having to wait in line for too long but when we arrived it was a whole different picture. Speaking to the staff, we figured it would be at least an hour before we got a table, which would be too late for us. We ended up going for take out and taking the food back to our apartment.

It was the turn for fish masala, aloo gobi and rice pulao this night. I'm not a big fan of the fish masala but since it was ready we just went for it. Funnily enough, it turned out to be the most tasty of the two dishes. The portions actually lasted us two days so we were happy. For $31, it was a great deal.

Hanaya Japanese Restaurant2828 152nd Street, #106, Surrey
Beautiful Japanese gem in Surrey
Submitted Thursday, January 1, 2015 - 4:32pm [Dine in]

The first thing you notice when you walk in the restaurant is the beautiful Japanese themed décor. The delicately pink cherry blossoms, glowing orb-like lamps and cozy seating create a soothing, romantic atmosphere, perfect for a date. The restaurant is never overcrowded, which makes it a nice setting for conversing. I am usually seated right away.

Customer service was prompt and polite, and the prices were right for the quality of the food. The menu covers everything from soups and salads, tempura, sushi, rolls, and meats. I highly recommend the Las Vegas Roll, Miso Soup and the Yam Tempura. They also offer all-you-can-eat, which is great if you want to try several sushi flavors. The bento boxes are also a great option, but they’re only available in the afternoons. My favorite is the Salmon Teriyaki Box, but all the ones I’ve tried are excellent.

I rate them 5/5.

Best Chicken at an Indian restaurant
Submitted Tuesday, December 30, 2014 - 10:47pm [Dine in]

Two words: CHICKEN METHI. I would stop right there, but I don’t think Dinehere would be okay with that.

We came in for an 8 o clock reservation and after a bit of a wait, finally got a seat. It was a not so busy Sunday so the wait was not too long (thankfully). We ordered paneer pakora two times and both times they came out good. Not greasy. The chicken methi stole the show though. To be honest, they were the best I have had.The curry was simply delicious and it was not too spicy but not bland either. We also had the korma and other chicken dish and they were not as great, the latter was kind of soup-like and could have been adorned more with more chicken pieces. i had to remove a star from service because the waiter seemed to be confused at times. But besides that, he was friendly and attentive.

Had I been asked a couple of months back about Central, I'd say that I don't know where all the negativity is coming from. But these past couple of times I have last come here for brunch, I have left with a dissatisfaction more than anything else. The food seems to have gone downhill, and with that, the service. I don't know about you, but I'm not really willing to wait more than 40 minutes to get mediocre, cold food. My smoked salmon tasted burnt and the central benny, which used to be my favorite, was just not right. I do not consider myself to be a confrontational person but when the waitress mixed up my order, she did not even apologize. Drinks are alright though. I have a feeling you are paying more for the ambience than anything else.

Maenam1938 West 4th Avenue, Vancouver
Above average Thai?
Submitted Tuesday, December 23, 2014 - 10:29pm [Dine in]

Maenam is not your choice for quick, run of the mill restaurants that serve Thai in Vancouver. This place in Kits is rather trendy for thai food, and is a little more expensive than your average Thai because ingredients are locally sourced. Prices are still not expensive though and I'm willing to pay for it.

While there are other places that beat it in terms of food, the ambience was quite nice, more upscale, and you can even take a date here. Service could do with a little more though, our server was not very helpful and didn't come back to check up on us when we didn't order drinks. We ordered the coconut mushroom soup which was for two as a starter and found it to be quite tasty. The pad thai was just average; I've had better elsewhere. My friend was more lucky and ordered the curry w/ pork belly and liked it. The roti was kind of bland. Wouldn't consider this my go-to place for Thai food but wouldn't completely turn it down either. 3.5 stars.

Delicious BBQ
Submitted Friday, December 19, 2014 - 11:20pm [Dine in]

Denman has lots of good restaurants, and this is one of them. This was my first time here but it definitely lived up the expectations and left us with a good impression. I had heard great things about it's meat but never got around to trying it. So when our initial restaurant of choice was packed, we decided to head down here. A little bit of luck and curiosity.

This is a little quaint restaurant with lovely staff. Despite the loud music and crowd, our group had a great time. I especially loved the fact that the staff was so friendly and enthusiastic to help pick out our dishes and bring them out in record time.We had the smoked brisket, potato fries, beef back ribs, and st. louis ribs. Special mention on the beef ribs which were great. Portions are small and plates are not cheap.

Itadakimasu Restaurant & Sake Bar4148 Main Street, Vancouver
Good izakaya option
Submitted Thursday, December 18, 2014 - 10:15pm [Dine in]

Recently discovered this place, I've only been here a couple of times but enough to realize why its been such a hit. While I still consider Guu #1 as far as izakaya goes, this one is does not disappoint. The tuna takaki is amazing and the bibimbap is actually quite good. The main problem can be getting here, esp if you dont have a car, but other than that, this little establishment is a gem on Main Street. Prices are a little on the high end but the food is authentic tasting, which is a plus. And if you don't know much about this type of food, the servers help you out and seem to be knowledgeable on what they are serving (I think the waitresses are originally from Japan).

The good thing about this place is that is does not get crazily busy, so finding a spot should not be a problem.

Hawker's Delight4127 Main St., Vancouver
Best bang for the buck Malay
Submitted Thursday, December 18, 2014 - 10:01pm [Take-out]

Hawker's Delight is THE place to go to for cheap Malay food. I've been coming here for years for their roti and hainanese chicken. I usually just take to go because it is always packed with lots of people, primarily college-going students (surprise surprise). Nonetheless, service is fast. For those that complain about it being too greasy or heavy, they are forgetting how inexpensive the food here is. Not much of a service offered here, but for less than $10, meal, what do you expect?

They dont accept credit cards so prepare to bring cash.

Guu is amazing
Submitted Tuesday, December 2, 2014 - 4:29pm [Dine in]

I love Guu. There is no other place I would recommend for izakayas than Guu. I used to be a regular at their original location on Thurlow but ever since I moved apartments I've had to find a new Guu to go to.

No change of taste between locations. I ordered the okonomiyaki with kimchi and it was delicious. Prices for food are low so it is really tempting to order more! I always have to stop myself. The sake is expensive though (duh) with the exception of the house sake. My favourite is the dassai.

No complaints. Even the service is great. People greet you as soon as you come in and are friendly at all times. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would!
