Terrible Prime Rib
Submitted Monday, February 16, 2009 - 11:49pm [Dine in]

Mrs. Dragon and I name to this location because the Burnaby location had a 3 hour wait fior dinner on valentine's day. Place was full and we were told we had an hour's wait. In actuality, we only waited for 10 minutes. Got seated and the waiter came by to tell us the specials. The special on that night was a 10 oz prime rib oscar which is the prime rib topped with prawns, scallops, asparagus and bernaise sauce. The waiter came back after a little while and we proceeded to order the escargot appy, the prime rib oscar special for me and the chicken creole for Mrs. Dragon. in the meantime, the waiter brought the fresh and warm sourdough bread which was very good. Shortly the appy came and it tasted pretty good, the escargot was baked with a indian-ish flavour to it. Then came the mains, Mrs. Dragon said the chicken creole was good. But my slice of prime rib seemed hard to cut. In fact it had a thick piece of fat all around the meat part of it and there was a thick tendon surrounding it also which made it very difficult to cut. I know that prime ribs do have marbleling but this was way too much fat and this thick piece of tendon was way too much. I've been there a few times and this is the first time the food has been this bad for me. Maybe it was an off night because of valentine's day.

Haven't been here for awhile...but
Submitted Tuesday, December 16, 2008 - 11:53pm [Dine in]

Haven't been to this Tropika for awhile because I usually go to the Robson Street one. Came here tonight with 5 friends for a xmas dinner. We arrived at 8pm and the place was about 3/4 full. Was seated right away and checked out the menu. Decided to have everyone make a choice so we can share. Ordered pineapple fried rice, pad thai, beef curry, green beans, homestyle chicken, sambal prawns and honey garlic ribs. Everything was tasty and food came promptly after ordering. Fried rice was good though on the small side, chicken was good, beef curry and sambal prawns were tasty. My favorite dish was the green beans or sambal bunchies as they are called. The decor was nice but the room was a bit loud in my opinion. The service was very good as our water glasses were always filled.

I would recommend this restaurant and will be returning in the near future.

Submitted Monday, December 15, 2008 - 10:55pm [Dine in]

Was here a couple of months ago with 2 friends on a Monday night. Got there about 6:30pm and my friends were already there.( Had reservation). Our table was in the back area but the table seemed a bit small for 3 people. Couldn't move to a bigger table cuz the room was full. Ordered one of there martini specials and it was pretty good tho a bit pricey. We ordered mussels which were very good, foie gras appy which was the best I've had anywhere, really melted in your mouth as smooth as butter. I had the sable fish which was really tasty. We shared a dessert which was alright but I'm not a huge dessert person. Overall the food , service and ambience was great but the room was a bit loud. Highly recommended.

It was solid!
Submitted Monday, December 15, 2008 - 6:37pm [Dine in]

Went here with 4 friends last week for dinner. It wasn't busy on a weeknight so we were seated right away. We had made reservations prior. We ordered a set menu and added a few dishes to it. We had Peking duck which consisted of 2 dishes. Both were fine. We also had the shark's fin soup which was individually served and each contained a decent sized piece of fin. This dish was very flavourful. The other dishes in the set menu were lobster, fish and seafood fries rice. We also added a shanghai bok choy and steamed chicken plate. All the food was decent & good but my favorite was the shark's fin soup. Service was attentive and we never had any dealings with the manager as other reviewer's did so I can't comment on that. Overall food was solid & good, service was attentive and interior was nicely appointed. Price was a touch higher than other restaurants but this is supposed to be a higher end place.

Not Bad for AYCE
Submitted Tuesday, December 2, 2008 - 4:50pm [Dine in]

Went here last week with Mrs. Dragon for dinner on a Saturday night. Arrived about 8pm and the place wasn't too busy, about half full. We were seated promptly and headed for the buffet. There were the assorted salds which we skipped and headed for the main items. I took the cauliflower, butter chicken, curry lamb, rice, tandoori chicken, samosas and naan bread. All were pretty tasty. The butter chicken was good as well as the curry lamb was tender as it should be. Everything was not overly spicy and the buffet table was always re-filled. The only thing i could complain about was that the naan bread was kind of burnt. Service was ok, basically what you expect from an AYCE buffet. View was nice as you can see the lights of the city. I would imagine on a nice summer night eating out on the patio would be great. Value was good in my opinion but prices have increased a dollar or two in the last while though still very affordable. Overall I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a nice simple indian dinner.

Have been to this restaurant for the last couple of months for lunch. Went there with a co-worker once a week and has not disappointed. The lunch specials are numerous and the food all taste good. The cost of the specials are of great value as they start from $ 5.95 and up. You get hot & sour soup, and rice with your order. Service is always pleasant and the restaurant is clean. I have tried the chicken dishes as well as the beef, the chow mein and prawn dishes. All dishes were tasty, fresh and well cooked. I recommend this place and definitely will return.

Flavourful Sticky Rice
Submitted Monday, November 24, 2008 - 2:25am [Dine in]

Went here for dim Sum with Mrs. Dragon last Saturday. Arrived around 1:2pm and waited for about 5 minutes for a table. Ordered from a list which i like because the food is made fresh and served hot to your table. We ordered supreme shrimp dumpling in soup, prawn sui mai, pan fried chive dumpling, steamed fish maw w/shrimp, eggplant and sticky rice. Everything tasted very good. Shrimp dumplings had nice big chunks of shrimp in it and dishes were of large size. The sticky rice was exceptionally good. Mrs. Dragon enjoyed it immensely which is saying alot because she is a very picky eater. Service was very good as the waiter we had was friendly and anticipated our need for take out containers based on the number of items we ordered. Overall, I would recommend this place and will definitely be returning again.

Submitted Monday, November 17, 2008 - 9:40pm [Dine in]

Went here with Mrs. Dragon on Saturday for a friend's wedding reception. When we first arrived, we both noticed that the restaurant was really nicely designed and decorated, quite fitting for a high end restaurant. Since it was a reception the menu was already set. We were seated and the dishes started to arrive to our table. the waiters first showed and explained the dish and then took it away to be divided up for every guest. Service was good, very professional and unobtrusive. The food itself for the most part was tasty and well cooked. Some of the dishes were, cold meat plate, crab claws w/prawns, prawns w/walnut, fish two ways, lobster w/cream sauce, seafood soup, mushrooms w/vegetables,etc.. Tho the food was tasty, the portions, in my opinion were small. Being the restaurant is high end, i assume the prices are higher as well so I feel that the value is not there. If you don't mind the portion size and cost, then I would recommend you try this restaurant as the food itself is good.

Long Wait for Service
Submitted Sunday, November 16, 2008 - 6:02pm [Dine in]

Went here on Saturday about 12:45pm to meet a few friends for lunch. My first impressions of the place was that it was small but nicely decorated. My friends were already there and had ordered their lunchs and were eating by the time I arrived. They had ordered the 3 item combo with fried noodles and sushi. Everything looked good and they said it was tasty. Tho one of my friends was missing some sashimi from his combo which he got only after asking the waitress to check on it. I waited an long time for a waiter to come over as they seem to be very slow in their service. I ordered the bento box combo with tempura, sashimi, and cali roll. Food, I agree was tasty and portions were of a decent size. Looking through the menu, they seemed to have lots of very imaginative rolls but I did not try any of them. Next time I when I have more time, I will try a couple of their different rolls. I would recommend this place only if you have time for the slow wait staff.

Glad to have a good dim dum restaurant
Submitted Sunday, November 9, 2008 - 10:17am [Dine in]

Though the lower mainland has tons of dim sum restaurants, taste wise, there are only some that i consider are good. Mrs. Dragon and I arrived at about 1:15pm on Sat and the place was busy with a lineup. Got our number and waited for about 20 minutes for our table. We ordered from a list which we like because the food comes nice and hot. We ordered har gow, sui mai, dried scallop on prawn dumplings, chicken feet in XO sauce, prawn rice rolls, prawn epring rolls and beef tripe & tendon. Everything was very tasty! The har gow had large chunks of prawns as well as all the other prawn dishes. Lots of other restaurants mince the prawns/shrimp so there is no texture or taste. The other dishes were very good also, the sauces were very tasty and the items were tender . These 7 dishes cost about $28.00 total which is a decent price for the good quality and taste. The interior is typical chinese decorations but clean and fresh. The wait staff wore nice uniforms which reminds me of the old days when all the restaurants did this. I definitely would recommend this restaurant and looking forward to returning soon. I hope that they can keep up the quality and taste.

p.s. I've read some reviews here that say the har gow are massive but ours were of regular size, maybe a touch bigger.

Went to this place for lunch today to meet some friends. Walked in and was seated right away in a booth. Interior was a nice and different as it used to be a italian retaurant and then a coffee type place. Menu had a very good selection of the standard japanese fare. We ordered some hamachi sahimi, cali rolls, cones, tempura, teri dons and soft shell crab. Overall, the food was good especially I liked the soft shell crab. Mostly in other places, it is small and dry but here this crab was bigger and very juicy. I was pleasantly surprised at the overall quality of this place. Will return again sometime. Recommeded.

Hon's is quick & cheap eats.
Submitted Wednesday, November 5, 2008 - 9:46am [Dine in]

I go to Hon's for lunch about once per week. Tho the food is not spectacular, it is decent. The main reason why i go is they have a large room where you can get a table pretty quickly because most people have a time limit for lunch. Secondly, they have a large menu selection so you don't have to be stuck eating the same type of food all the time. Also they have specials which are a good price range.

I would recommend this restaurant for fast & decent food.

Cold Chicken Burger
Submitted Sunday, November 2, 2008 - 11:10pm [Dine in]

Having a craving for a burger, the 3 of us arrived here about 8pm sunday night. Was seated and the waiter came by for drinks. Our drink order came promptly and we ordered our meals after that. We ordered a spinach and artichoke dip, banzai burger, chicken mushroom burger, and another chicken burger as well. Everything came after a short wait and we dug in. All the food was as expected for Red Robin except that the chicken mushroom burger was on the cold side. I would say that everything was decent other than the cold burger. Service was good and we would return again.

Good Weekend Buffett
Submitted Sunday, November 2, 2008 - 7:29pm [Dine in]

Been to this restaurant for their weekend AYCE. Mrs. Dragon and I decided on short notice to come here for Sunday lunch. It was really busy when we arrived about 1:15pm. Manager said it would be 1/2 hour or more wait but we decided to stay. We were happily seated in 20 minutes. Overall the food items were pretty good, ordered the deep fried chicken wings which were fried perfectly today but some times they overfry it and the outside becomes too hard. Lettuce wrap, deep fried calamari was excellent also. We then ordered the yellow curry, chicken fried rice and the noodles with beef and they all came hot and tasty. Service was a bit lacking as it was so busy but understandable. Ended the meal with some cocnut ice cream for me and mango ice cream for the Mrs. Dragon. I happily recommend this place as the food and service is always friendly and adequate.

Great AYCE Sukiyaki
Submitted Sunday, November 2, 2008 - 10:02am [Dine in]

Been here several times for dinner. Was here with Mrs. Dragon on friday night for dinner around 9:30pm. Made reservations prior and had no wait this time tho several other times we have had to wait even with reservations which is ok considering how busy this place is.

Service is always good and attentive with the waitresses being very friendly. The interoior style of the place is modern and nice with good ambiance. They also have a private room for large groups of people. The food is always good tho the meat selection of only beef and pork is limited. The pork and beef are tasty but the beef tends to have a bit too much fat on it. It would be nice to have some seafood items on the menu also but the price would definitely go up. Maybe they can have a seperate sample plate of seafood at an additional price. The vegetable selection is good with a mixture of western and asian products. Lastly the price is very reasonable.

Overall I would reccomend this place for anyone that wants hot pot sukiyaki style. The food, service and decor is fabulous but be sure to make a reservation as this place is always busy!

Fabulous Noodles!
Submitted Sunday, November 2, 2008 - 9:08am [Dine in]

Went with Mrs. Dragon to try this place on a reccomendation for its noodles. Got there about 8:45pm on a Saturday night. Not busy with about 6 other tables seated. Was seated right away, staff seemed very friendly, asked the waitress what her recommendation was and she was pretty knowledgeable about the menu. We ended up trying their ramen noodles w/chicken, bibimbap and gyoza. The noodles came quickly and was nice and hot. First impressions were that it was a pretty decent sized bowl, took a taste and the soup was delicious. Noodles were done just right , not overcooked at all. Second came the gyoza, whioch were decent nothing special but was only warm not hot. Lastly came the bibimbap, that too was just decent, slightly bland, needed a little more seasoning. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place for its noodles but the rest of the dishes were decent also.

Very Good food and friendliness!
Submitted Thursday, October 16, 2008 - 9:40am [Dine in]

Used to go to this restaurant when it was on King Ed & Cambie before they moved to Main St. Haven't been for awhile but went with several friends the other day. Walked in and was greeted immediately by the Owner with "My Brother". Same as before!

Our party of 7 ordered all different items and everything was good. Fried pate, steamed rolls, deep fried wontons, slad roll, lemon grass chicken, pho and my favorite Hot Pot Chicken Rice. Also they have appy size plates for some common items like spring rolls, prawm imperial and others that is just the right size when there are only 2 people dining. Sometimes you want to try something and the regular size is too big to order.

All the food was delicious, freshly made, tasty and hot. Service is good and friendly. I would highly recommend this place to anyone and we will be back often.

Submitted Monday, October 13, 2008 - 10:11am [Dine in]

Been to both these restaurants for AYCE many times. As compared to most other AYCE's in the city, this restaurant has probably been the best of the bunch. Food has always been good and service has been consistent. My favorite right now is their grilled salmon collar and beef short ribs. The manager's at both places are always efficient and friendly. Service has been good most times and food arrives within acceptable times after being ordered. If you are looking for an AYCE japanese restaurant, this one will satisfy your needs!

Had reservations on a sunday night at 7:30pm for a birthday. Waited for 15 minutes upon arrival cuz we wanted the window seat for the magnificant view. Best view in the city. Appys were very good especially the foie gras, melted in your mouth. There were 6 of us so everyone had something different. Salmon, lamb chops, bison steak, halibut, veal, etc. Everything was fantastic except my halibut was a bit overdone. The only thing was the service was very slow that night and the waiter apologized to us several times due to short staffing. Otherwise highly recommended!

Submitted Tuesday, September 9, 2008 - 5:25pm [Dine in]

Went to this restaurant last Sunday night around 8pm. Not busy and was seated right away. Menu looked good with lots of selection. Ended up ordering grill combo for 2, bibimbap (in regular bowl), smoked beef dish as well as beef rib soup and spicy tofu soup. There were 4 of us. Food came quickly and was very good. Good marinade for the raw pieces and the soups were very good though a bit on the small side. The bibimbap was excellent in fact, we ordered another one but in the heated clay bowl instead. The 2nd bowl wasn't as good as the 1st one though. They also kept refilling the side dishes anytime we asked. Overall I would definitely come back again.
