Solid Mexican/South American food
Submitted Tuesday, May 5, 2009 - 11:42pm [Dine in]

I went to Zocalo at around 5:30 to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. I saw that they were supposed to have food and drink specials today and that's why I went. When I first stepped in, I thought the place looked pretty chill, with a little edgy decor. The music was a little too loud though. The server was okay; she just led us to the table and got us our menus. I asked her if there were any specials for Cinco de Mayo and she said that there wasn't any, which was strange, considering the posters on their walls read that there would be food and drink specials today. So we just stuck to the main menu.

Food :

Ceviche - pretty good! the fish was firm but still had very soft edge to it. There was a lot of lime in the dish but was very good with the combination of avocados and other condiments.

Queso Fundido - it's like a brie cheese dip except much smaller in portions compared to the fried tortilla chips (which were very good, by the way). The dish itself was very good but it was too small to please our hungry appetites. The salsa on the side seemed pretty silly as the amount was too small to be eaten anyways.

Sirloin Skewers - WARNING: if you eat nothing but tender steak or red meat, DO NOT TRY THIS DISH! I don't actually mind lean beef but the sirloin was too tough for me to chew properly. The vegetables, on the other hand, were cooked to perfection and I was very happy with them.

Chicken Taquitos - Very good except the portion was wayy too small! Two big spring roll sizes. The guacamole was quite good and the dish itself was excellent overall.

Drinks:

White Trash Margarita - okay. wasn't too exciting. can't recollect anything special about this drink.

ginger tequila sunrise - AWESOME! the orange flavour was very intense in this drink but you could still feel the tequila's presence. GREAT!

dessert:

pastel tres leches - great dessert! you can really taste the different milk between the layers. the only issue would be that the cake is a little dense ( i like moist cakes) but it's amazing how moist it is!

Overall, pretty good. It is a pretty good place to check out. However, I don't know if I'll be returning. The ambiance was below my expectations. The only thing that really really impressed me was the dessert.

Awesome find.

Along with a friend, I visited Wild Rice for the first time a few days ago. It was pretty early so we were seated at a comfortable sofa. It was quite dark but great ambiance. The server was quite friendly and helpful with the food and drinks menu.

We first started off with the Vegetable Spring Rolls. Wow, they were big and deliciously crispy and the sauce was just a perfect match. Next came our Chinese Barbequed Lamb Steamed Buns. For me, that was my favourite part of the meal. The lamb was tender, juicy, and flavoured nicely yet didn't seem out of place with the buns. Lastly, we had the Shanghai Noodles. Wasn't as good as the rest of the meal. It was pretty salty but the tasted very good. The vegetables in the noodle were crunchy and fresh. For dessert, I had the Five Spice Lava Cake. Although it was a little too cooked to be a lava cake, the combination of five spice and the chocolate was great. The spices weren't too powerful and it balanced well with the dairyless citrus ice cream.

The portions are generous since they are meant for sharing. The decor was chic and all the dishes were arranged very nicely. The menu is also vegan and vegetarian friendly so I would recommend it to anyone. I can't wait for my next visit!

Steveston Pizza Co.3400 Moncton Street, #100, Richmond
OK ish
Submitted Friday, January 9, 2009 - 11:07pm [Dine in]

I decided to go to Steveston Pizza Co. with my parents after I heard some good comments on this place. Since I heard all their pizzas were thin crusts, I expected them to be CRISPY.

When I saw the reviews on SPC, I didn't know there were only 3 chairs to sit on. It's really MEANT for take-out so if you ever decide to go, don't look for tables.

The wait wasn't too long, 15 - 20 minutes. We ordered the Blue and Caveman mediums and had our slices in the car.

Maybe it was because it was HOT out of the oven but the crusts were awfully soggy. There was way too much topping of meat and cheese. The pizza almost seemed desperate. The Blue was better out of two but of course, if you are the type who has a distaste for smelly cheeses, Blue is not for you. Caveman was ok, just your ordinary meat and cheese pizza.

The staff were very friendly but it wasn't exactly a sit-and-dine place so not much to comment on the service.

There were lots of people coming in and out. I guess it's well-known with the locals. However, I wouldn't really go back. It's not much different than Panago or Camy's.

Stepping Stones Bakery5679 Main St., Vancouver
A VERY good find.
Submitted Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 8:09pm [Dine in]

I had been DYING to go to Stepping Stones Bakery for its rave reviews. I went in and the staff were very friendly. They have paninis, savoury and sweet pies, cookies and lots of delicious pastries. It was a very hard choice to make, but I ended up getting an Espresso Ball, a Blueberry Flan, a slice of Chocolate Cheesecake and an Oatmeal Chocolate Chunk Cookie.

In my opinion, the Espresso Ball was the best I had ever tasted. There is also a Rum Ball at SSB. They are quite big, not the tiny ones you see at an ordinary bakery. The moment I took a bite of the Espresso Ball, I could just taste the coffee in my mouth. But it didn't lack in the chocolate flavour either. If anyone ever goes to SSB, I strongly suggest they get the Espresso or Rum Ball.

The Blueberry Flan was also a joy to eat. The crust was amazingly crisp and it wasn't too sweet with just a hint of lemony flavour. The flann didn't lack in the bluberries either and it was just heaven with a good cup of coffee.

The cheesecake was just okay. I actually prefer my chocolate cheesecakes quite chocolatey but the SSB Chocolate Cheesecake was an original cheesecake with chunks of chocolate cheesecake batter. It also could have been smoother and creamier and the crust was a little too thin and a bit soggy for me.

The Oatmeal Chocolate Chunk Cookie was quite good too. I could really feel the chewy oatmeal. However, I did think the cookies felt a little wet. It may have been because it was a little cold.

All in all, it was quite a good find. I would like to go back and try their pies. It is a small place but very clean and the staff are friendly. The bakery owner mentioned that they only use unbleached flour. All that came to $10.04, which was a pretty good price. It could be a little easy to miss but it's on the corner of Main and 41st.

Is that it?

I had been dying to go to this gelato place after such rave reviews. But Garda Gelato was a big disappointment. None of the flavours impressed me, and I'm not very picky about gelato. It was just too sweet without any "chewieness" like Mondo. I tried the coffee, hazelnut, caramel and banana. Hazelnut was the best out of them all, but still not very good. I would not go back there again.

LOVE this restaurant!

I've been going here for 4 years and have always loved everything. Their pizzas are very good, and caesar salad is very garlicky, just to my taste. And all the rest of the meal is just splendid. The dishes were a little salty in the beginning but now, they are just right. Recommended for sure.

I don't understand...
Submitted Saturday, March 29, 2008 - 11:02am [Dine in]

I had the warm goat cheese salad, mussels with fries and the steak. The food came out pretty late. The mussels also weren't fresh and tasted pretty bad and bland to me. Fries were crisp and pretty good. The staek was also just okay. I guess the best part of the meal was the dessert, profiteroles. Very crisp shell and good ice cream and chocolate sauce. But I don't get why this cafe has a four star rating when in my opinion should only get about three. I wouldn't go back there.

Excellent food!

It was my first time trying a Dutch pancake. It's quite thick, not your ordinary pancake. I got a granola pannekoek. Definitely recommended! It had pieces of raisin and granola mixed into the batter and came with some cinnamony apples. It was amazing!!! My friend ordered chicken noodle soup, which was just okay. There's a huge menu so leave plenty of time to choose! The waitresses are prettty nice, although I thought the food came a little slow. Overall, very good and would go there for more.

Good gelato!
Submitted Wednesday, March 26, 2008 - 10:42pm [Dine in]

I went there after a big family dinner. It's on a good location, with bright lights inside. There's a lot of flavours to choose from, and they are all pretty delicious. I got cappuccino cookie and almond avalanche, which were really awesome! I tried the rum and raisin, but found it too sweet. The only problem with this place is the service. I asked the server if I could sample two of their flaovurs and he looked at me like he was very annoyed and mad at the same time. Maybe it was because there was a little line up but I thought that was pretty rude. But a pretty solid place, with good gelato. Will want to try again!
